Wonder is a restaurant and ordering operation that lets customers combine dishes from multiple restaurant concepts in one order. It opened its 12th Connecticut location in Canton in October 2026, according to the Hartford Courant. The report describes a model built from software, kitchen technology, and logistics—but it does not establish that AI is currently running Wonder’s Connecticut kitchens.
What is Wonder?
Wonder combines menus from multiple restaurant concepts in a single ordering operation. Customers can choose items across cuisines and have them prepared through one Wonder location, rather than placing separate orders with several restaurants. The company offers delivery and pickup in Connecticut; it also describes dine-in service at its food halls. Wonder says delivery averages 35 minutes or less, a company claim rather than an independently measured result. Its Connecticut page lists the available locations and ordering options.

The Hartford Courant describes compact outlets where one kitchen produces food for a range of concepts, including Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean, Italian, Indian, pizza, salads, barbecue, poke, and desserts. The concepts include Wonder-created brands and offerings associated with chefs and restaurants; the Courant cites Streetbird by Marcus Samuelsson as a national brand available through the model. Wonder says it partners with celebrated chefs and restaurants.
Where is Wonder in Connecticut?
The Courant reported that Wonder had opened at The Shops at Farmington Valley in Canton on October 11, 2026, bringing its Connecticut total to 12. It recounts earlier openings in Fairfield, Milford, and Stamford, followed by West Hartford, Newington, Darien, New Haven, Trumbull, Westport, Hamden, and Danbury. Wonder’s current Connecticut location page lists the same 12 cities:

- Milford

These figures are time-specific: the Courant’s October 11, 2026 report also put Wonder at 160 operating locations between New Hampshire and Delaware. It reported a company goal of reaching 400 locations before 2028; that is an announced target, not a guaranteed expansion.
Is Wonder a food hall or a ghost kitchen?
It has elements of both, but neither label tells the whole story. Wonder presents food halls as dine-in venues and supports pickup and delivery as well. The Courant’s reporting focuses on compact storefront kitchens that produce food for multiple concepts, which is closer to a shared-kitchen operation than a conventional food hall where separate restaurants operate individual stalls.

The practical distinction is who runs the food operation. At a conventional food hall, diners may order from different vendors with separate kitchens and operators. At Wonder, the pitch is variety across menus through one ordering and production operation. For a customer, that can make a single mixed-cuisine order simpler; it does not necessarily offer the same experience as visiting several independent restaurants in one venue.

The Courant reports that some foundational components are prepared centrally and transported to local storefronts, where food is finished. Wonder disputed the description of its outlets as reheating stations, telling the newspaper that dishes are cooked, assembled, and finished to order using techniques such as grilling, roasting, baking, frying, simmering, and sous vide.

Those accounts describe different parts of the process: some preparation may happen before ingredients reach a local outlet, while the company says the dishes receive substantial cooking and finishing there. The available reporting does not provide an independent kitchen-by-kitchen audit, so it cannot establish how much of each dish is prepared at a particular Connecticut location.
What role do software, robotics, and AI play?
Wonder’s technology story is broader than AI. Founder Marc Lore described the company’s approach in a 2024 video, quoted by the Courant: “The real magic of Wonder lies at the intersection of software and culinary engineering. That’s our mode.” The report says Lore described investing hundreds of millions of dollars and employing 200 full-time culinary and software engineers over five years to develop the capacity to serve 30 restaurant concepts across cuisines from a compact location.

The Courant also reports that Wonder bought Spyce and its Infinite Kitchen and Infinite Makeline technology for $186 million. Lore described Infinite Kitchen’s potential as assembling up to 500 bowls an hour in a Fortune video interview, and said, “Every bowl comes out perfect every time” and “You’re going to get hotter food, faster food.” Those are his claims about the technology’s potential, not independently verified performance figures for Connecticut stores.

Lore described the ambition as “a fully autonomous food system that can plan, produce and deliver personalized meals at scale, serving all 21 meals people eat each week.” Wonder North America CEO Tony Hoggett also described a goal combining AI, kitchen robotics, and autonomous delivery. These statements outline plans and ambitions; they do not show that Connecticut locations currently use AI to run their kitchens or operate autonomously.

Why is Wonder controversial?
The appeal: variety and convenience
The favorable case in the Courant report is that one location and one order can offer different cuisines and price points. Customers quoted in the story praised quick pickup and the ability to order across concepts. Those comments illustrate individual experiences, not a representative survey of Wonder customers.
The concerns: food, labor, and independent restaurants
Critics question whether a standardized, technology-led operation can provide a restaurant experience as personal as dining at independent establishments. They also raise concerns about centralized preparation, working conditions, the pressure such operations may put on independent restaurants, and the concentration of food production and delivery in large companies.
Jen Faigel of CommonWealth Kitchen, an organization that advocates for independent restaurants, told the Courant: “Companies like Wonder aren’t built to feed people. They’re built to make money. They’re just fast food in a nicer wrapper.” She also raised concerns about private investment gaining control and argued that convenience can weaken food’s connection to community and culture. These are Faigel’s criticisms, not findings about Wonder’s measured impact in Connecticut.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Wonder’s response on store staffing is that the Infinite Makeline handles repetitive assembly work and is not intended to replace employees. A company spokesperson told the Courant: “We don’t view Infinite Makeline as a replacement for team members, and its rollout has not resulted in any reductions to store-level headcount.” That is the company’s position; it is not an independent assessment of the technology’s labor effects.
What is known about Wonder’s local impact?
The Courant report and Wonder’s location page establish the company’s Connecticut footprint and describe the operating model and competing views about it. They do not establish a Connecticut-specific effect on restaurant employment, independent restaurant closures, or market share. The criticism and company response should therefore be understood as arguments about the model, not proof of a measured local outcome.
