Changed pixels instead of a full-screen refresh
E Ink screens are not typically associated with fast animation. The reported approach updates only pixels that change instead of refreshing the entire display, making gameplay possible on this screen. The article describes the original Game Boy display as 160 × 144 pixels in grayscale; the M5PaperS3’s higher-resolution panel therefore has more pixels to represent the game image.

Controls and sound
The report says basic Bluetooth controller support is available. Audio comes with a hardware limitation: the M5PaperS3 has a simple single-tone buzzer rather than a conventional speaker. PaperboyS3 can rapidly switch among four audio channels to produce chiptune-style sound, but that is not the same as having a standard audio speaker.

Is the M5PaperS3 available to buy?
Liliputing reported in July 2026 that the M5PaperS3 had reached end-of-life status and was no longer available at its original $59 price. The article said new or used resale units could cost more than twice that amount. Those are statements from the report at publication, not a current stock or price check.
How is this different from a Raspberry Pi Game Boy Color kit?
