Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a new or evolving workflow that needs sophisticated print CSS, paged-media layout, or PDF output controls, Prince is generally the stronger tool to evaluate. wkhtmltopdf may still make sense when its existing output is stable and acceptable, but its official downloads page lists version 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020. That is the page’s listed stable version, not proof of recent release activity. Neither tool should be selected on reputation alone: test your actual templates, fonts, scripts, and deployment environment before migrating.
How wkhtmltopdf and Prince differ
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source, headless command-line converter built on Qt WebKit. Its repository identifies the project as LGPL-3.0 licensed, and its official downloads page describes build differences that can affect available features. Some features require patched Qt, so distribution packages may behave differently from official builds. See the wkhtmltopdf project repository and official downloads page.

Prince is a commercial HTML/XML-to-PDF converter. Its documentation covers HTML, Markdown and XML input, CSS, JavaScript, graphics, paged-media styling, and PDF output controls. Its features make it especially relevant to controlled reports and publishing workflows; they do not establish that it will render every website or application better. Review the Prince user guide and PDF output documentation against your requirements.
Which tool fits your workload?
| Need | What the documentation establishes | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Keep stable legacy PDFs | wkhtmltopdf remains available, but the downloads page lists 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as its current stable series. Its builds may differ depending on patched Qt. | Keep it only if your output, dependencies, and security review remain acceptable. Pin the build and regression-test before changing packages. |
| Print-oriented CSS and pagination | Prince documents paged-media features, generated page content such as footnotes, and PDF controls. The reviewed wkhtmltopdf sources do not establish equivalent modern print-feature support. | Evaluate Prince if the requirements include complex pagination or publishing layout. Validate with your own sample documents. |
| Dynamic JavaScript-heavy pages | The wkhtmltopdf status page suggests Puppeteer for dynamic-JavaScript sites. Prince documents JavaScript support, but that does not guarantee browser-equivalent behavior for a particular app. | First decide whether you need an application to execute or controlled HTML to lay out. Test script execution, network access, and readiness behavior in the exact deployment. |
| PDF profiles or accessible output | Prince documents PDF profiles, tagged output, and PDF/UA use. The reviewed wkhtmltopdf sources do not establish a modern profile-based PDF/UA workflow. | Map each required profile to documented controls and validate generated files independently. Source semantics and accessibility remain your responsibility. |
| Untrusted content | The wkhtmltopdf project warns that untrusted HTML/JavaScript can put the server at risk. Prince’s guide also says server-side use needs careful configuration for security and reliability. | Threat-model input HTML, scripts, URLs, file access, and network requests for either renderer; sanitize and isolate workloads. |
| Licensing and operations | wkhtmltopdf is an open-source project, but packaging and Qt build differences can require environment-specific investigation. Prince offers multiple commercial license forms. | Compare eligibility, license scope, support and upgrade terms, volume, deployment model, staff time, and regression costs—not just the software fee. |
Is wkhtmltopdf still maintained?
The official downloads page lists 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as the current stable series on that page. The project status page describes the underlying Qt/WebKit foundations as dated: Qt 4 had been unsupported since 2015, and the page says its WebKit had not been updated since 2012. Those are historical engine statements from a page whose surrounding development discussion refers to 2020, not a fresh measurement of every package or fork in 2026. Check the exact build you deploy, its security posture, and its maintenance path rather than treating the downloads listing as evidence of current development. Read the wkhtmltopdf project status page.
#1 Best Overall
The wkhtmltopdf downloads page gives a direct security warning: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML” unless user-supplied HTML/JS is sanitized; it warns of potential server takeover. If your service accepts user content, do not treat a converter process as a security boundary. Restrict input, isolate the renderer, and limit filesystem and network access according to your threat model.
Does Prince support print CSS and accessible PDFs?
Prince’s documentation describes paged-media styling and generated page content, including footnotes, along with PDF output options and profiles. These capabilities are reasons to test Prince when page breaks, running content, or output profiles are requirements. They are not a guarantee that an existing stylesheet will migrate without changes.
Rank #2
Prince can produce tagged output and supports PDF/UA use cases, but it does not make a source document WCAG-compliant by itself. YesLogic explicitly says the HTML source must be coded appropriately to address accessibility requirements. Use semantic markup, then validate the resulting PDF with your accessibility process; do not infer conformance from a converter setting alone.
What does Prince cost?
Prince is commercial software with several license forms. The vendor licensing page, checked October 3, 2026, displays a desktop license at USD $495; a per-server license at USD $3,800 for the stated government/noncommercial-use category; and an academic server license at USD $1,900. It describes annual commercial site licensing as starting around USD $2,000/year for startups depending on document type and volume. These displayed amounts and their scope may change; confirm eligibility, terms, and a current quote directly on Prince licensing.
Rank #3
The vendor also names DocRaptor and EuroPDF as cloud API services that provide access to Prince without local installation. Their pricing, data handling, and service terms are separate from Prince licensing and should be checked with those providers. Choose hosted conversion only after confirming that its deployment and data-residency requirements suit your documents.
How to decide without risking production PDFs
- Inventory the output contract. Record templates, CSS, JavaScript, fonts, images, headers and footers, paper sizes, margins, links, metadata, and what consumers expect the PDF to look like.
- Classify the input. Establish whether HTML is controlled or user-supplied. Do not pass arbitrary HTML/JS to wkhtmltopdf; sanitize and isolate if legacy use remains. Apply an explicit security review to any server-side converter.
- Build a representative corpus. Include an ordinary invoice or report, the longest table, a page-break edge case, charts or images, non-Latin or right-to-left text if relevant, and any dynamic content.
- Render with the exact candidates. Pin the versions and deployment builds under consideration. For wkhtmltopdf, record whether the build uses patched Qt. Keep fonts, network conditions, and input identical.
- Compare against acceptance criteria. Inspect pagination, typography, links, metadata, file size, latency, failure behavior, deployment burden, and accessibility. No comparative benchmark establishes which is faster or more accurate for your workload.
- Price the full change. Include license scope, support term, volume, cloud or data-residency needs, operational effort, template conversion, and regression testing. Verify current Prince terms with the vendor.
- Migrate only for a concrete reason. Move when a required CSS/PDF feature, supportability concern, security posture, or total operating cost outweighs conversion and regression risk.
Screenshot alternative for image captures
If the actual requirement is a screenshot of a web page rather than a paginated document, try ScreenshotNeo first: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server, with clean captures and billing that excludes failed or cache-hit shots. It is not a replacement for an HTML-to-PDF renderer when you need print layout, page ranges, or PDF profiles.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo makes a screenshot API call, not an HTML-to-PDF conversion. For a page image, one GET request returns the capture; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which outcome occurred. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Prince guarantee that a migrated PDF will look better?
No. Documentation describes capabilities, not comparative results for your templates. Render representative files with the exact builds and compare them against your acceptance criteria.
Can ScreenshotNeo replace Prince for paginated reports?
No. ScreenshotNeo is for web-page screenshots and offers PDF capture, but the information here does not establish Prince-style print CSS and paged-media controls. Use a PDF renderer for document layout requirements.
