Playwright screenshots can differ between Linux and macOS even when the page code is unchanged. A screenshot captures a browser rendering environment—not just HTML and CSS—and operating-system behavior, fonts, browser builds, settings, hardware, headless mode, and screenshot scale can all affect the pixels. For reliable visual tests, compare against a baseline created in the same controlled environment; if both platforms matter, keep separate baselines for each.
Why the same page can produce different screenshots
Playwright identifies operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can affect rendering. It also notes that fonts and platform-specific rendering contribute to cross-platform differences. A mismatch therefore does not, by itself, prove that the application changed. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance recommends running tests in the same environment used to generate the baseline.
Fonts and text layout
Linux and macOS may have different fonts available, or select different fonts when a page’s preferred font is unavailable. Glyph shapes and spacing can change, which can alter line breaks and element dimensions. If text wraps differently, check which font actually loaded and whether it is available in both environments before increasing a pixel-diff threshold.
Browser version and build
Browser updates can alter rendering. Record the Playwright package version and browser version alongside visual baselines, and pin them in CI when repeatability matters. Playwright recommends keeping its browsers current, but a planned upgrade can change screenshots; review the resulting diffs and refresh baselines only after confirming the change is expected. Host configuration and execution mode
Settings, hardware, power source, and headed versus headless execution are among the environment variables Playwright calls out. A local Mac capture and a Linux CI capture are not controlled comparisons if these conditions also differ. First make the capture setup consistent; then determine whether remaining differences warrant platform-specific baselines or indicate an application regression.
Make the comparison environment explicit
Choose and record the environment that owns each baseline. At minimum, specify:

- Operating system and image/version.
- Playwright package version and browser project/build.
- Headed or headless mode.
- Viewport, device scale factor, and screenshot scale.
- Font availability and any application-specific font-loading requirements.
Generate the expected screenshot and run comparisons in that same environment. If Linux and macOS are both supported targets, create platform-specific snapshots instead of requiring every pixel to match across operating systems. Playwright’s snapshot naming can include browser and platform details, and its documentation explicitly warns that screenshots differ across browsers and platforms.
Keep screenshot scale consistent
Playwright’s Page API offers two screenshot scales. With scale: 'css', one output image pixel represents one CSS pixel. With scale: 'device', the image uses device pixels and can be larger on high-DPI displays. Set the same scale in both runs before investigating pixel-level differences. See the Page API.

Stabilize the page before capturing
Even on one machine, time-dependent content can make screenshots flaky. Ensure required data and fonts are ready, and use Playwright’s screenshot assertion options to reduce avoidable variation from animation, caret position, and volatile page elements. These controls make capture more stable; they do not make Linux and macOS render identically.

});Replace the example URL and test name with your application’s page and scenario. If an element is genuinely volatile, use the screenshot assertion’s stylesheet controls to hide or adjust it deliberately rather than masking broad areas that could conceal regressions. The available assertion controls, including animation, caret, stylesheet, and comparison tolerance options, are documented in the PageAssertions API.

- Confirm the environments. Compare OS image/version, Playwright and browser versions, headed/headless mode, settings, and hardware where relevant.
- Check fonts and wrapping. Inspect the font actually used by the page and whether it is available; look for changed line breaks or element sizes.
- Match screenshot scale. Ensure both runs use CSS-pixel or device-pixel output consistently.
- Control page state and timing. Wait for required fonts and data, disable animations, hide the caret, and handle genuinely volatile content with targeted screenshot styles.
- Review the remaining diff. Decide whether it is an expected platform rendering difference requiring a separate baseline or an application change that needs fixing.
Threshold and pixel-count settings can tolerate small differences, but they do not explain a systematic mismatch. Diagnose the source before relaxing comparison strictness.

Is Playwright WebKit on Linux equivalent to Safari on macOS?
No. Playwright’s WebKit is derived from WebKit main; it is not branded Safari. For the closest Safari experience, Playwright recommends running on macOS. Linux WebKit can be a more affordable CI option, but it should not be treated as a pixel-identical substitute for macOS Safari. Platform and browser-specific baselines may be appropriate.
