Wiring Interactive Brokers to an LLM with MCP: Portfolio Analytics and Security Traps

A practical guide to connecting IBKR portfolio data to an LLM through MCP, choosing between Web API and TWS API, interpreting position fields, and protecting account access.

You can connect Interactive Brokers (IBKR) portfolio data to an LLM through an MCP server, but MCP is only the tool interface between the model and software that fetches the data. A safe starting point is a read-only analytics flow: choose an IBKR API, retrieve authorized account and position data, expose only narrow read operations through a server you trust, and make the model show its inputs and assumptions. Neither MCP nor an LLM makes the resulting analysis an official broker report.

Choose an IBKR API before choosing an MCP connector

IBKR documents two API paths that can supply portfolio data. The right one depends on how you want to run the integration and which data behavior you need; the official documentation does not establish a latency comparison between them. See IBKR’s API overview for the broader API landscape.

Path Connection and integration shape What to account for
Web API REST-based, with HTTP and WebSocket access. Portfolio data is retrieved through documented endpoints. Portfolio calls have sequencing and paging requirements. The newer positions endpoint is documented as near-real-time and without the caching used by the older endpoint; that description applies to that endpoint, not every IBKR data feed. See the positions endpoint and newer positions endpoint.
TWS API A TCP socket API connected through Trader Workstation (TWS) or IB Gateway. IBKR lists Python, Java, C++, C#, and Visual Basic support. The API guide describes it as intended for experienced developers. Its portfolio documentation lists quantity, market price and value, average cost, and realized and unrealized P&L. See the TWS API introduction and portfolio retrieval documentation.

Use the Web API if its endpoint-oriented HTTP or WebSocket model fits your service. Use the TWS API if you want its socket-based integration through TWS or IB Gateway and can operate that runtime. Decide based on the connection model and the specific fields and update behavior your application requires, not on an assumed speed advantage.

Build the data path in a deliberate order

An MCP server can offer the model tools such as “list accounts” or “read positions,” but those tools are your application’s interface, not IBKR endpoints automatically made available to every MCP client. A minimal read-oriented flow looks like this:

  1. Establish the IBKR connection. Implement the chosen Web API or TWS API path in software you can review and operate. Do not assume a particular third-party MCP connector exists, is maintained, or has a particular permission set; the official sources cited here document the APIs and MCP protocol, not a verified IBKR connector.
  2. Enumerate eligible accounts before requesting portfolio data. For non-tiered account structures, IBKR documents /portfolio/accounts as the account-list call required before other portfolio endpoints. Its documentation distinguishes accounts whose position or account data can be viewed from the separately documented list of accounts a user can trade. Do not treat “can view” and “can trade” as interchangeable permissions. For tiered structures such as advisor or broker accounts, consult IBKR’s account-specific routes and requirements in the portfolio accounts documentation.
  3. Fetch only the portfolio data needed. The standard positions endpoint returns positions for an account and supports paging, with up to 100 positions per page. Handle additional pages rather than assuming one response contains every position. If you use /portfolio2/{accountId}/positions, IBKR describes it as the newer endpoint with near-real-time updates and without the caching of the older endpoint. Keep the endpoint name and its documented behavior attached to any freshness claim.
  4. Normalize and label the result before exposing it to the model. Preserve the account, instrument, quantity, currency, relevant source fields, and retrieval time in the server’s result. The Web API positions documentation includes position and P&L-related fields; the TWS portfolio documentation lists quantity, market price, market value, average cost, and realized and unrealized P&L. Field availability and refresh behavior vary by interface and endpoint, so do not assume the payloads are identical.
  5. Expose narrow MCP tools. Give the model a small set of read operations with explicit inputs and bounded outputs, such as retrieving positions for an authorized account. Enforce account access in server code; a tool description telling the model to stay within limits is not an authorization check.

What “real portfolio analytics” can and cannot mean

IBKR’s documented fields can support useful questions—such as which positions have the largest reported market value, or what unrealized P&L appears in a particular response. They are inputs to analysis, not proof that a custom calculation reproduces an IBKR report. A model-generated total or comparison is only as interpretable as the data scope and calculation rules behind it.

For every computed metric, define and expose its scope: which accounts and positions were included, the source interface and retrieval time, the currency basis, the reporting period, and the calculation assumptions. A sum of returned P&L fields, for example, should be labeled as that sum, not presented as a complete account return unless the method actually accounts for the relevant cash flows and other factors. Fees, corporate actions, currency conversion, taxes, options multipliers, and reporting periods can all affect interpretation; raw position fields alone do not establish how a custom calculation handled them.

IBKR separately offers account statements, PortfolioAnalyst, and Flex queries as reporting options, listed in its API overview. They can serve as comparison references, but a bespoke LLM result should not be described as matching or replacing them unless you have defined and tested a comparison with aligned data scope, period, currency treatment, and methodology.

Treat MCP, the server, and brokerage credentials as separate trust boundaries

MCP is a protocol for connecting clients to tools; it is not a certification of a server’s safety, a guarantee that an LLM will interpret results correctly, or a brokerage permission system. The Model Context Protocol project warns: “When you run a local MCP server, you are trusting it with the same level of access as any other application or package on your system.” That matters especially when the process can reach brokerage credentials, account data, or local files. Review the code and permissions before running it, and use least privilege.

  • Keep credentials distinct. The MCP client’s token is not an IBKR credential. The MCP authorization specification explicitly prohibits forwarding a client token to an upstream API; the connector must use a separately authorized upstream credential under that API’s rules.
  • Apply transport-appropriate credential handling. The MCP authorization specification, version 2025-11-25, describes authorization for HTTP transports. It says STDIO implementations should instead retrieve credentials from the environment. For protected servers, it requires token validation and addresses audience binding and secure token storage. Follow the relevant flow rather than treating any token as valid for any server.
  • Minimize what tools can do. For analytics, implement explicitly read-only operations and restrict which accounts and fields they can return. Avoid granting order placement or modification capabilities to the analytics tool set.
  • Require a separate path for trading. If you later add an operation that could place or modify an order, put it behind a separate, explicit authorization path and human confirmation. MCP itself does not provide a brokerage-specific read-only mode.
  • Validate model output before relying on it. A model can misread, omit, or overstate data. Display the underlying fields and timestamps for material claims, and use broker reporting or a separately verified calculation when the result informs consequential decisions.

These boundaries are covered in the MCP project’s authorization specification and security guidance. The specification governs protocol authorization behavior; it does not make a particular connector trustworthy or ensure that its implementation follows the intended controls.

Practical checks before connecting an account

  • Confirm which IBKR interface and endpoint the server actually calls, and what its fields and update behavior mean.
  • Test account enumeration, account authorization, and position paging with the intended account structure.
  • Inspect the MCP server’s source or obtain equivalent assurance about its behavior, dependencies, credential storage, and network and file access.
  • Verify that the analytics tools cannot submit or alter orders, and that access checks are enforced by server code.
  • Check that results identify their source, retrieval time, currency context, and calculation scope before presenting them as analytics.
  • Compare any important custom metric with an IBKR report using aligned accounts, period, currency handling, and methodology before treating the values as equivalent.
