If you can’t delete a passkey in Windows 11, first open Settings > Accounts > Passkeys and select Delete passkey next to the entry. If the passkey is missing, it may be stored in a Microsoft account, another synced password manager, a phone or tablet, or a security key instead. Delete it through the provider that stores it—and check whether you also need to remove its registration from the account where you use it.
Delete a passkey saved on this Windows 11 device
- Open Settings > Accounts > Passkeys.
- Find the passkey you want to remove and select Delete passkey beside it.
- Confirm the deletion if Windows asks.
This control removes the copy stored on the Windows device; it does not necessarily remove a passkey stored or synced elsewhere. Microsoft says passkey management is handled by the passkey provider. Microsoft’s saved-passkeys guidance explains the Windows controls and provider distinction.

Why the passkey may not appear in Settings
A passkey can be stored in Windows Hello on the device, a synced password manager, a phone or tablet, or a physical security key. If it is not listed on the Windows passkeys page, identify which provider created or stores it and use that provider’s controls. Removing a passkey from one device may not remove a synced copy available on other devices.
Windows also has Advanced options on the passkeys page for configuring available passkey services. If that control or a deletion option is unavailable, an organization administrator may have restricted the feature.

Choose the right place to remove it
| Where the passkey is stored or registered | Where to remove it | What the removal affects |
|---|---|---|
| Windows device | Settings > Accounts > Passkeys | Deletes the device-bound copy. |
| Personal Microsoft account | Advanced Security Options in the Microsoft account dashboard | Removes that passkey as a way to sign in to the Microsoft account. |
| Work or school account | Remove the account entry at mysignins.microsoft.com, and delete the saved copy from its provider | Removes the account registration and the stored credential; organization policy may limit the available controls. |
| Another credential manager, phone, tablet, or security key | The provider or device that stores the passkey | Depends on the provider and whether you remove the stored credential, its account registration, or both. |
Remove a passkey from a Microsoft account
Personal Microsoft account
- Sign in to Advanced Security Options.
- Expand the passkey entry and choose Remove.
Removing it means that passkey can no longer be used to sign in to that Microsoft account. Add and verify another sign-in method first if you still need one.
Work or school account
Microsoft directs users to remove the passkey entry at mysignins.microsoft.com and delete the stored passkey from its provider, such as Windows Hello. If the relevant controls are missing or disabled, ask your organization’s IT administrator; policy may restrict the available options.

Remove a passkey stored by another provider
If the passkey is saved in a synced password manager, manage it there rather than expecting Windows Settings to remove it. Microsoft lists Microsoft Password Manager, Google Password Manager, and Apple iCloud Keychain among examples of passkey providers. Check the provider’s current instructions for its exact menu names and removal behavior.

Do you need to remove it in Windows and online?
It depends on what you want to remove. Deleting the Windows copy removes that device’s stored credential. Removing a registration from a Microsoft account or work or school account removes that passkey as an account sign-in method. If the passkey is synced, removing it through the provider may affect its availability on more than one device. Check the scope of each action before confirming it.

Credential Manager is documented for saved website, connected-application, and network credentials. Microsoft’s passkey removal instructions point to Windows Settings or the provider that stores the passkey, rather than treating Credential Manager as a universal passkey control.

Before removing an old passkey
- If you are replacing a device, set up and verify the new passkey before deleting the old one.
- For a Microsoft account, make sure another sign-in method is available before removing its passkey if you still need access.
- For a synced passkey, confirm whether you intend to delete the stored credential across the provider or only remove its registration from a particular account.
- If your work or school account does not offer the required control, contact IT rather than assuming the passkey has been removed.
