Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKram is an early-stage, local-first macOS tool that sorts the files in a folder you choose into seven categories by file type. Its developer, Aditya Singh, announced it on September 26, 2026, said the project is still being built, and asked readers to beta test it. The safety features that matter most for a tool that moves files, including a dry-run preview, operation logs, and undo, are described as things the author wants to add. They are not presented as features you can use today.
What Kram is meant to do
Kram takes a cluttered folder and sorts its contents into categories. The announced categories are:

The author describes the problem in familiar terms: “Hundreds of files. Random screenshots. ZIP archives. PDFs. DMGs. Old projects. Files I couldn’t remember downloading.” The goal is to automate that repetitive sorting so you do not have to do it by hand, while keeping control over which locations the tool is allowed to touch.
The announcement is the primary source for everything in this article: Kram: A Tiny macOS Tool for Taming Chaotic Folders, posted on DEV Community on September 26, 2026.

The safety model: you choose the locations
The author’s core safety principle is that Kram works only with locations the user explicitly chooses, and leaves system files alone. For a tool that relocates files, that boundary matters more than any feature list, because it determines how much damage a mistake could cause.
The announcement sums up the intent in one line: “Automate the boring part without giving the automation permission to wreck your Mac.” That is the author’s framing of the design goal. It is not an independent safety assessment, and no audit or test of that boundary is cited in the announcement.
The author also makes a point about trust: “Because “trust me, I sorted everything” isn’t exactly a great UX for a file-management tool.” The implication is that a sorter has to show what it will do, and what it did, rather than asking for faith. Whether Kram delivers that today is the question the rest of this article addresses.
What is available now and what is planned
The announcement separates the core sorting workflow from a list of features the author hopes to add. The table below reflects how the announcement describes each item as of September 26, 2026.
Rank #2
- Portable Hard Drive: Picture Keeper automatically finds and copies photos and videos directly to the external hard drive, and let’s you copy, transfer, store and protect data with ease; simple USB backup for PC and Mac computers; 32GB capacity
- Easy Setup: Photo storage is as simple as plugging Picture Keeper into your USB port and clicking “Start Backup”; Easy to use Free Software, and seamless compatibility with Mac and PC, Picture Keeper does all the work for you
- Back Up and Restore: Restore backups when upgrading computers for hassle-free photo storage; Picture Keeper photo organizer automatically skips duplicate photos to maximize storage space
- Extra Storage: Picture Keeper external drive can store up to 8,000 photos, so you never have to see the “out of storage” message again

| Capability | Status as described in the announcement |
|---|---|
| Sorting files in a chosen folder by type (seven categories) | The intended core workflow; the project is described as still being built |
| Dry-run mode (preview without moving files) | Named as a feature the author would like to add |
| Reliable operation logs | Named as a feature the author would like to add |
| Undo or rollback | Named as a feature the author would like to add |
| Custom organization rules | Listed as a possible future direction |
| Duplicate detection | Listed as a possible future direction |
| Automatic Downloads organization | Listed as a possible future direction |
| Scheduled cleanup | Listed as a possible future direction |
| Previews | Listed as a possible future direction |
| Shell integration | Listed as a possible future direction |
| Native macOS GUI | Listed as a possible future direction |
The practical consequence is that the reversibility features most users would look for first are not described as available. Until a dry run and rollback exist in a release you have confirmed, treat every run as one that cannot be previewed or undone by the tool itself.
What the local-processing claim does and does not establish
The announcement says files stay on the Mac and are not uploaded to a server. That is the developer’s stated design. The announcement does not link a privacy policy, and no source code review or independent test of network behavior is cited. Treat the claim as a commitment from the author, not as verified privacy behavior. If data handling matters to you, check the project’s own documentation and code before running it on sensitive folders.
Testing: what has and has not been shown
The announcement invites testers to try the tool against a set of hard cases. These are proposed test scenarios:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Thousands of files
- Duplicate file names
- Files without extensions and files with unusual extensions
- Hidden files
- Nested directories
- Spaces and special characters in names
- Permission-restricted files
- macOS-specific files
- Mixed file types in one folder
The announcement reports no benchmark, no supported macOS version, and no completed run against an 8,000-file folder. The mention of thousands of files and an 8,000-file folder describes what testers are invited to try, not demonstrated capacity or speed.

Availability, version, and naming
Kram is currently in a beta-tester recruitment stage. The announcement does not state a license, a public download channel, or a release version, so this article gives no installation steps. For current code and download details, follow the links in the original post and treat anything beyond the beta invitation as unconfirmed.
The name is shared with an unrelated open-source project on GitHub that handles texture encoding and viewing. Its features, releases, and platform details do not apply to Aditya Singh’s file organizer, so do not mix the two up when searching.
How to judge whether it fits your workflow
Because the announcement offers no comparative tests, the most useful way to evaluate Kram is against your own needs. Check these points:
- Workflow: do you want automatic sorting by file type, or do you prefer to organize files manually and case by case?
- Control: can you confine the tool to one folder you choose, rather than granting it broader access?
- Preview and reversibility: is there a way to see planned moves before they happen, and to undo them afterward? The announcement describes both as future work.
- Conflict handling: the announcement does not explain what happens when two files would land in the same place, so test that case yourself.
- Platform support: the announcement does not state a supported macOS version, so confirm compatibility before installing.
If you do run a beta build, do it on a copy so that a surprise costs you nothing:
Quick Recap
- In Finder, select the messy folder and choose File > Duplicate (Command-D).
- Point Kram at the duplicate only, never at your original folder or any system location.
- Before anything else, check the Other category, since unfamiliar or unusual file types tend to end up there.
- Spot-check files with duplicate names and files without extensions, which are among the hard cases the author lists.
- Delete the duplicate once you are satisfied, or keep it as a restore point if you are unsure.
