For cleaning crews that move among client buildings, the right time clock records not just when an employee worked, but which client site or job the hours belong to. Compare phone and kiosk options, location rules, missed-punch handling, and payroll handoff before choosing a system.
What a cleaning-business time clock needs to do
A basic clock that stores only start and end times may leave you piecing together labor costs by account later. Look for a workflow that lets employees select or confirm the client, site, or job when they punch in, then reports those hours under the same code. CKZ, for example, describes client/job codes and hours-by-client reporting; Chronotek Pro describes job-level time and labor-budget comparisons. These are vendor-described features, not evidence of guaranteed savings.

- Capture site-specific hours: Confirm whether a worker can select a client or job at punch time and whether managers can correct a coding mistake.
- Fit the crew’s devices: Mobile apps or browser access can suit crews carrying phones. A shared kiosk can fit a fixed larger site. Telephone clock-in may help where workers do not have smartphones.
- Manage exceptions: Ask how supervisors review late, missing, duplicate, or out-of-location punches and what employees can do to report a missed punch.
- Prepare payroll: Verify that approved hours can be exported or integrated with the payroll system you use, and whether that capability is included in the plan.
How location verification works—and what to ask
GPS and geofencing are not interchangeable guarantees of accuracy. A geofence defines a virtual boundary around a site; the product may block a punch outside it, flag the punch for review, or record it with location context. The implementation varies by vendor. A building’s layout, weak GPS reception, or poor connectivity can also affect how a punch works in practice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ask a vendor to demonstrate the complete punch flow at a representative client location: what the worker sees inside and outside the boundary, what location information is saved, what happens when GPS or connectivity is weak, and how a manager reviews an exception. Do not assume that a clock-in location feature means continuous employee tracking; establish exactly when location is captured.

These products are options to evaluate, not a ranking. The descriptions come from vendors and do not establish how reliably a feature will work in a particular building or whether a product meets a specific employer’s payroll or legal requirements.
Evaluate a real crew workflow before buying
- Map the work pattern. List recurring client sites, whether crews move between buildings in a shift, which workers have phones, and whether any site needs a shared clock.
- Run a site-coded punch demonstration. Have the vendor show an employee selecting the correct client or job, clocking in and out, and correcting a wrong selection.
- Test location exceptions. Ask for an inside-boundary punch, an outside-boundary punch, and a scenario with weak GPS or no connectivity. Check whether the result is blocked, flagged, or recorded, and who resolves it.
- Test manager review. Demonstrate how a supervisor handles a missed punch, approves time, and sees hours grouped by site or client.
- Check payroll handoff and total cost. Confirm your payroll provider is supported, whether export or integration is included, and what additional services cost. Recheck current prices and feature packaging directly with the vendor.
When a shared kiosk or tablet makes sense
A kiosk can be useful at a fixed, larger site where employees do not each have a suitable phone or where the employer wants a shared clock-in point. OnTheClock describes optional kiosk mode as well as employees using their own phones. Its cited page does not specify compatible tablet models, so confirm current hardware and setup requirements with the vendor before purchasing an Android tablet or other device.

Records, privacy, and legal requirements
A time clock is a recordkeeping tool, not proof of legal compliance. Wage, break, overtime, travel-time, record-retention, and employee-location-monitoring requirements depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. Check authoritative labor guidance for the places where employees work, and make sure the system’s location behavior and policies match applicable requirements.
