Start by identifying how the mouse connects: Bluetooth pairs with the laptop’s Bluetooth radio, while a receiver-based mouse uses its matching USB dongle. The right fix depends on which type you have. Check the mouse’s underside or model instructions, then work through the relevant steps below.
Before troubleshooting: check the mouse and its power
Look at the mouse, its packaging, or its model-specific instructions to find out whether it uses Bluetooth, a USB receiver, or offers both modes. If it has a connection-mode switch, select the mode you intend to use. The controls for turning on pairing mode vary by model; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Make sure the mouse is switched on and charged, or replace its batteries with the type specified for that model. Microsoft notes that some Bluetooth devices may not enter pairing mode or maintain a connection when their battery is low (Microsoft Support: Troubleshoot Bluetooth not connecting in Windows).
If your mouse connects over Bluetooth on Windows
- Confirm Bluetooth is available and on. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 10, and check that Bluetooth is turned on. Microsoft says most Windows devices include Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is absent, check your laptop’s specifications or manufacturer’s documentation to confirm whether it has Bluetooth capability (Microsoft Support: Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows).
- Put the mouse into pairing mode. Use the mouse’s documented pairing control, then place it near the laptop. The control and the time it must be held are model-specific.
- Add the mouse from Windows Bluetooth settings. Choose the option to add a Bluetooth device and select the mouse when it appears. If it is already saved but will not connect, remove it from the saved device list, then pair it again. Microsoft’s pairing instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so use current Windows guidance for a supported operating system.
- Reset the connection if pairing still fails. Check the mouse’s charge or batteries, turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. Install available Windows updates and restart the laptop. For Windows 11, Microsoft also directs users to the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app (Microsoft Support: Troubleshoot Bluetooth not connecting in Windows).
If your Windows laptop does not have Bluetooth capability and the mouse is a Bluetooth model, a USB Bluetooth adapter may add Bluetooth to the laptop. It will not fix a mouse that uses a dedicated receiver, a faulty mouse, or a Bluetooth problem unrelated to missing hardware (Microsoft Support: Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows).

If your mouse uses a USB receiver
- Check that the mouse is powered on and that its matching USB receiver is plugged into the laptop.
- Move the receiver to a different USB port. If it is connected through a hub, check that the hub has power; if the issue continues, plug the receiver directly into the laptop.
- Unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and reconnect it. Microsoft lists this as a way to reestablish a USB wireless connection (Microsoft Support: Troubleshoot problems with your Microsoft mouse or keyboard).
- If the mouse or receiver has a reset button, use it only as described in the instructions for that model. Reset steps differ between devices.
- If the mouse still does not respond, try it on another computer and install any driver the mouse requires. If it fails on another computer too after checking power and the required driver, hardware trouble becomes more likely; Microsoft says replacement may be needed.
A replacement receiver must be compatible with the exact mouse model. Check with the manufacturer rather than assuming that another receiver will work.
If you use a Mac
Pair a Bluetooth mouse with the Mac the first time. After pairing, a remembered accessory should connect automatically when it is turned on and within range. Use the Mac’s Bluetooth controls to select the paired accessory, and consult the mouse instructions for its pairing and power controls. Apple’s guide describes Bluetooth accessory pairing on Mac but does not establish identical behavior for every third-party mouse (Apple Support: Connect a Bluetooth device with Mac).

What the symptoms can tell you
- The Bluetooth mouse does not appear: Check that the laptop supports Bluetooth and it is on, then check mouse power, pairing mode, and proximity. The mouse’s instructions determine how it becomes discoverable.
- The mouse appears but will not connect: Remove it from saved devices and pair it again. If that fails, check power, toggle Bluetooth, install available Windows updates, and restart.
- The receiver mouse stopped responding: Check mouse power and the receiver connection. Try a different or direct USB port, then unplug and reconnect the receiver after a short wait.
- The mouse works on another computer: The laptop’s Bluetooth, USB port, or driver may be involved, but this result alone does not identify the cause. Continue with the relevant laptop-side steps above.
- The mouse fails on another computer too: Hardware trouble is more plausible after you have checked its power and installed any required driver.
