Young adults use AI even as many express concern about its effects. Current surveys point to potential personal costs—including scam exposure and difficulty judging whether online content is authentic—but they do not establish a single “AI trust” score or quantify an economy-wide cost caused by declining trust.
Do young adults trust AI?
There is no single, standardized measure of an “AI trust gap” in the available studies. Some surveys ask whether people use chatbots; others ask how they expect AI to affect society, whether they feel concerned, or whether they have encountered scams and misleading content. Those answers describe different things, so they should not be combined into one trust score.

In a Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults ages 18–29, fielded February 17–23, 2026, 66% said they had ever used AI chatbots. Yet 48% expected AI to have a negative effect on society over the next 20 years, while 14% expected a positive effect. These are chatbot-use and future-impact findings, not a direct test of whether respondents trust AI. Pew Research Center’s age analysis reports the results.
A separate Pew analysis found that the share of U.S. adults ages 18–34 who were more concerned than excited about AI increased from 40% in 2024 to 55% in 2026. Its cross-national reporting also found mixed feelings among adults under 35 in many countries. These findings cover adult age groups, not young adults alone, and concern is not the same as distrust. Pew’s international surveys included 42,151 adults in 36 countries, fielded February 8–May 13, 2026; the article describes its youth analysis as covering 37 countries, so those scopes should not be conflated. Pew’s cross-national report explains its comparisons.

Why do young people use AI if they are worried about it?
Use and concern can coexist. A person may find chatbots useful or convenient while remaining uneasy about their effects on society, privacy, or the reliability of what they produce. The Pew findings establish that adoption and negative expectations occur together in the same broad age group; they do not establish why any individual uses AI or prove that use causes concern.
Nor do expectations about AI’s long-term social impact contradict reports of scams or misleading content. The surveys ask different questions, use different age bands and populations, and measure expectations separately from reported experiences.

Are AI scams targeting young adults?
A Malwarebytes-published survey offers one indication of reported exposure, not an independently replicated estimate of prevalence. The company says its March 2026 survey included 1,500 respondents across the U.S., U.K., Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Among surveyed adults ages 18–22, 70% said they had experienced an AI-related scam in the past year. The company also reported that 44% had encountered AI-generated information they later found false or misleading. Both figures are self-reported survey results; they do not show that AI alone caused a particular loss, or that every young adult faces the same risk. Malwarebytes’ account of the survey provides its findings and context.

The practical point for readers is to treat an urgent message, unexpected payment request, or unfamiliar seller cautiously whether or not it appears to have been generated by AI.

How can I tell whether something online is AI-generated?
There is no dependable visual shortcut that proves a post, image, audio clip, or message was made by AI. A polished style, odd phrasing, or apparent imperfection can raise a question, but none is conclusive on its own. Instead of relying on a detector or a gut feeling, check the claim and its source:
- Trace the original. Look for the earliest available source, rather than relying on a repost, screenshot, or cropped clip.
- Check independently. For a consequential claim, look for confirmation from reputable sources that do not merely repeat the same post.
- Verify the sender through another channel. If a familiar person asks for money, a password, or a verification code, contact them using a known number or account—not the contact details in the message.
- Pause before paying or sharing. Check unfamiliar retailers independently and avoid letting urgency substitute for verification.
- Report threats or suspected scams. Use the platform’s reporting tools and, where appropriate, the relevant local authorities or financial institution.
These are general safety practices, not a guarantee that a message is genuine. Malwarebytes also recommends reviewing social privacy settings and followers, using unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and keeping software updated. Those are the company’s recommendations; the survey does not establish how much each step reduces risk. The company’s article lists its guidance.

What does the evidence say about the cost?
The evidence supports concern about possible personal and social costs: reported exposure to scams, uncertainty about whether online material is authentic, and the risk of consequential advice or identity misuse. It does not calculate the total economic cost of an AI trust gap, establish that declining trust caused reported harms, or show that all young adults distrust AI. “High cost” is therefore best understood as a risk worth examining, not a measured aggregate loss.
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre announced a survey for chatbot users ages 13–25, covering use, perceptions, trust, emotional support, life advice, and possible effects on relationships with parents. Its July 10, 2026 announcement described research in progress, not findings. It cannot yet be cited as evidence of young users’ trust levels or chatbot effects on families. The JRC announcement sets out the study’s intended scope.
