A wireless home theater system sends audio to speakers without running speaker wires from a central receiver to each speaker. It is not necessarily cable-free: speakers still need power, and the TV, source devices, or wireless-audio transmitter may need HDMI or other connections.
What “wireless” means in a home theater
The term describes the audio connection between the system’s sending equipment and its speakers. It can avoid long speaker-wire runs across a room, but does not remove the need to power speakers or connect source equipment. A TV, streaming device, game console, or disc player may still connect to other components with cables.

That distinction matters when planning an installation: wireless audio changes how sound reaches the speakers, not necessarily how every part of the theater connects.

Conventional AV receiver setup
An AV receiver is a central hub. It receives and processes audio and video from devices such as a TV, set-top box, disc player, streaming device, or game console. It can amplify audio for speakers and route video to the display. In a typical receiver-based layout, speaker wires run from the receiver to the speakers. Dolby also notes that wireless speaker options exist, so the receiver label alone does not establish how a particular system is wired.

Transmitter-and-powered-speaker setup
In WiSA’s certified home-theater arrangement, a transmitter sends audio wirelessly to powered speakers with built-in receivers. That architecture can reduce speaker-wire runs and make speaker placement less dependent on routing cables back to a central receiver. Each speaker still needs power, and the source side may still require HDMI or other connections. WiSA describes this architecture on its certification page; this is the company’s description of its own system, not an independent endorsement.
Wireless does not guarantee compatibility
“Wireless” is a broad description, not a guarantee that components from different systems will work together. For a WiSA setup, check whether the transmitter and speakers are certified for the same WiSA system type. Do not assume that any wireless TV, transmitter, or speaker will interoperate. WiSA Association describes WiSA and WiSA E on its association page.

Speaker layout still determines the experience
Wireless transmission does not determine how many speakers you have or where they go. The channel layout describes the arrangement. For example, Dolby explains layouts such as 5.1.2 and 7.1.4 using ear-level speakers, subwoofers, and height speakers. The suitable layout depends on your room and installation goals; Dolby says there is no single perfect arrangement for every space. See its home theater setup guide when planning placement.

What to check before setting one up
- Speaker layout: Decide how many channels and speakers fit your room and the experience you want.
- System compatibility: Confirm the transmitter and speakers are designed or certified to work together; do not rely on the word “wireless” alone.
- Power access: Make sure every powered speaker can reach a power outlet. Wireless audio does not mean wireless power.
- TV and source connections: Check how the TV and other devices connect to the system, including the HDMI features required by your selected equipment. Dolby recommends checking connection support for the features you need.
- System architecture: Choose between a central AV receiver and speakers connected by speaker wire, or a compatible transmitter-and-powered-speaker arrangement that reduces those wire runs.
What WiSA’s published specifications mean
WiSA Technologies lists support for up to eight channels, uncompressed 24-bit audio at 48 or 96 kHz, fixed latency of 5.2 ms at 48 kHz or 2.6 ms at 96 kHz, and synchronization of ±2 µs on its home theater technology page. These are vendor-published specifications, not independent comparative test results or guarantees for every wireless home theater system. They describe WiSA technology; they should not be generalized to other wireless approaches.
