The right wireless gaming headset is the one that works with your exact console or computer, using the connection method you need. Check the headset’s full model name and included adapter before comparing sound, comfort, microphone, or battery life: a brand name—or the word “wireless”—does not guarantee compatibility.
Start with the devices you need to use
List every device the headset must work with: for example, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Switch, or a phone. Then check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact headset variant, including any letter suffix such as “X” or “P,” and confirm which adapter comes in the box. PlayStation specifically advises checking with the headset maker about third-party compatibility. Sony’s PS5 FAQ also notes that some third-party licensed headsets and certain PS4-licensed models may work, sometimes after a firmware update.

Do not assume that a headset compatible with PlayStation is also compatible with Xbox, or that two headsets in one product family use the same connection. SteelSeries’ compatibility guide, for example, distinguishes product-specific Xbox and PlayStation connection methods. Its examples include an Arctis 1 Wireless for Xbox using USB wireless and an Arctis 9X using Xbox Wireless; other PlayStation examples use USB wireless or a 3.5 mm controller connection. These examples describe those models, not a universal rule.

“Wireless” can mean a USB adapter, a console-specific wireless protocol, Bluetooth, or a combination. Find out which mode is used for gaming on each platform; Bluetooth support on a product does not necessarily mean the console can connect to it directly.

PS5: Bluetooth is not the same as USB wireless
Sony says third-party wireless headsets that use Bluetooth are not supported directly on PS5, while most USB and analog headsets are supported. A headset may have Bluetooth for a phone and still rely on a USB adapter for PS5 gaming. Sony’s pairing instructions list PULSE Elite, PULSE 3D, Gold, and Platinum wireless headsets and describe connecting the USB adapter and turning on the headset. For another brand, verify the precise PS5-compatible connection with its manufacturer.
Xbox: look for the Xbox-specific model and connection
Check that the exact variant is listed for your Xbox console and identify whether it connects through a USB adapter or Xbox Wireless. The official Xbox support pages in this source set do not establish a universal compatibility rule for third-party headsets, so confirm the model with both the headset maker and your console documentation. Xbox Wireless Headset FAQ and Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows setup cover Xbox products and adapter setup, respectively.
2.4 GHz and Bluetooth may serve different roles
On some headsets, a USB dongle provides the gaming connection while Bluetooth pairs with a phone or other device. Read the setup instructions to see whether you can switch between modes, whether the dongle must move between devices, and whether audio can play from both connections at once. Do not infer simultaneous audio or chat mixing from a Bluetooth label alone.

Use the exact product listing as a compatibility check
The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5X Wireless product page lists Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, PS5 and PS4, PC, Mac, handhelds, and mobile, with 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth. SteelSeries also lists ChatMix as unsupported on PlayStation and Mac for this product. It is an example of a broad manufacturer-published compatibility list, not a tested winner or evidence that every multi-platform headset works the same way. Check the exact variant and adapter on the current product or retailer listing before buying.
Compare comfort, microphone, controls, and battery
Once compatibility is established, compare features using exact-model specifications, dependable independent reviews, or an in-person fit check. The official product information cited here does not provide a shared test of competing headsets, so it cannot establish which model sounds best, lasts longest, or feels most comfortable.
- Comfort and fit: Look for reliable assessments of clamping force, weight, earcup depth, headband pressure, glasses comfort, and breathability. If possible, try the headset on; comfort varies with head shape and session length.
- Microphone: Seek sample recordings or independent mic tests, and check whether the boom retracts or detaches, where mute is located, and whether sidetone is available on your platform.
- Controls and chat: Confirm that volume, mute, mic monitoring, and game/chat balance work on the device you actually use. Some controls are platform-specific.
- Battery and charging: Compare the manufacturer’s stated runtime and charge time for the exact model. Check whether it can be used while charging and whether its battery is replaceable; do not treat claims from different products as directly comparable unless the test conditions match.
- Simultaneous audio: If you want phone calls or music while gaming, verify that the model supports the exact combination of connections and that both can operate at once.
- Sound and spatial audio: Check whether spatial audio comes from the headset, console, or game, and whether the feature works on your platform. Sony says PULSE 3D supports PS5 3D audio when the game supports it; that compatibility statement is not a comparative sound-quality test.
- Serviceability: Before treating replacement ear pads, cables, dongles, microphones, or warranty service as available, check support for the exact model in your region.
Check what happens if you use the headset wired
A wired fallback can be useful when the battery is flat, but it may not preserve wireless controls or microphone behavior. Sony’s PULSE 3D instruction manual says its included four-conductor cable is required to use the microphone with compatible wired devices. In passive cable mode, wireless connection, chat/game balance, mic mute, mic monitoring, and volume controls are disabled. The manual also says that mobile devices do not support 3D audio with this headset. Check the manual for your own model rather than assuming a 3.5 mm cable retains every feature.

Read battery claims in context
Battery figures are manufacturer claims tied to particular models, not results from a common comparison test. Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ estimates up to 12 hours of wireless play for PULSE 3D; verify whether a current revision changes that claim. SteelSeries advertises 15 minutes of charging for nine hours of play for the Arctis Nova 3X Wireless on its Nova 3X setup guide. That claim applies to the Nova 3X, not the Nova 5X. Neither figure establishes which headset has better battery life under your use conditions.

Build a shortlist around your use case
- For one console: Start with headsets whose manufacturer explicitly lists your console and the required connection. On PS5, distinguish USB or analog support from third-party Bluetooth-only wireless.
- For Xbox and PlayStation: Look for a model page that names both console families and confirm the exact Xbox or PlayStation variant and included adapter. Do not assume a platform-specific variant works on the other console.
- For console plus PC or phone: Check the mode used on each device, whether switching requires moving a dongle, and whether simultaneous audio is supported if you need it.
- For long sessions: Prioritize a fit you can tolerate for hours, then compare stated battery and charging details for exact models. Manufacturer battery claims are not a substitute for independent testing under comparable conditions.
- For wired backup: Confirm the cable type and whether the microphone and controls remain available in wired mode. Read the manual for the exact headset.
Choose only after the compatibility list, connection path, and essential features line up with your devices. Then use independent testing or a trial to decide among models on comfort, microphone, and sound—areas that manufacturer compatibility pages alone cannot rank.
