WireGuard vs. OpenVPN on UniFi Dream Machines: What Performance to Expect

Ubiquiti recommends WireGuard over OpenVPN for throughput, but actual UniFi Dream Machine speeds depend on the model, WAN, endpoint, and configuration.

WireGuard is the better bet for throughput on a UniFi Dream Machine, but there is no universal speed ratio. Ubiquiti says OpenVPN provides lower throughput than WireGuard and recommends Teleport or WireGuard over OpenVPN for desktop and laptop clients. A community UDM-Pro test showed a large gap, but its results are specific to that setup—not a speed guarantee for every Dream Machine.

How much faster is WireGuard than OpenVPN on a UniFi Dream Machine?

Ubiquiti’s OpenVPN server guidance states, “OpenVPN provides lower throughput than Wireguard.” The documentation does not give a ratio or model-by-model VPN speed ratings, so it supports the direction of the comparison, not a promise that WireGuard will be a particular number of times faster.

A user-reported iPerf3 comparison on a UDM-Pro illustrates how wide the difference can be in one configuration. The test author used a Mullvad endpoint in Seattle and described the test location as about 1,300 km away. Results below are download/upload Mbps; they are reported by the project author, not official Ubiquiti ratings. The report’s original publication date is not stated in the available page extract.

Test mode WireGuard OpenVPN
Single stream 1,024 / 1,250 Mbps 222 / 297 Mbps
Four parallel streams 913 / 1,054 Mbps 221 / 290 Mbps
Bidirectional 800 / 746 Mbps 204 / 3 Mbps

These figures come from a community UDM-Pro test report. They depend on that gateway, firmware and software configuration, endpoint, route, traffic conditions, client, and test method. They should not be generalized to other Dream Machine models, current firmware, different WAN capacities, or other VPN servers.

  • Default WAN Ports: (1) 10G SFP+, (1) 2.5 GbE RJ45
  • LAN Ports: (3) 2.5 GbE RJ45 including (1) PoE

What kind of UniFi VPN are you comparing?

“VPN performance” can mean different traffic paths, and the results are not interchangeable:

  • VPN server: a remote device connects back to a network behind the Dream Machine. The gateway’s WAN upload capacity can limit how quickly a remote user downloads from that network.
  • VPN client: selected local devices send their traffic through an external VPN provider. The provider endpoint and the gateway-to-provider path affect results.
  • Site-to-site VPN: two networks connect to each other; its traffic path and constraints differ from an individual remote-access client.

Ubiquiti documents WireGuard and OpenVPN as gateway VPN client types and lists both among VPN server options. Its overview says up to eight VPN clients are supported. See the VPN client documentation and VPN server overview for the relevant role and setup details.

Dream Router 7 UDR7
  • Management Capabilities - Utilizing the Network app for iOS and Android devices, you can manage and analyze your network through the Machine. As a network controller, you can use it to view network topology, manage system traffic, engage a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to see what's using the most bandwidth, and much more.
  • Network Overview - View network topology and configuration, real-time statistics, and debugging metrics. Monitor the network's vitals and make on-the-fly adjustments.
  • Deep Packet Inspection - The proprietary Deep packet Inspection (DPI) engine includes the latest application identification signatures to track which applications (and IP addresses) are using the most bandwidth.
  • Guest Portal/Hotspot - Configure custom settings, including authentication, Hotspot setup, and the option to use your own external portal server.
  • Wireless Uplink - This functionality enables wireless connectivity between access points for extended range, wireless adoption of access points in their default state, and real-time changes to network topology.

Why your Dream Machine may be slower than the example

A VPN test cannot exceed the practical limits of its traffic path. Consider the physical link speeds at both ends, gateway resources, protocol, congestion, and configuration. For a VPN server, the Dream Machine’s WAN upload is especially important: it sends data to the remote client. The remote client’s connection can also be the bottleneck.

Enabled features matter, too. Ubiquiti says resource-intensive Threat Management and Smart Queues may reduce throughput by up to 30%; that is general gateway guidance, not a VPN-specific benchmark. The actual impact depends on the device and workload. Details appear in Ubiquiti’s gateway performance guidance.

Connectivity prerequisites can also determine whether a remote-access test works at all. Ubiquiti says most VPN setups other than Teleport require a public IP. Its OpenVPN server instructions say a gateway behind NAT needs the OpenVPN port forwarded on the upstream router; the default port is 1194. The same instructions list a Next-Gen UniFi gateway or Cloud Gateway and Network application version 7.4 or newer as requirements. Check the OpenVPN server requirements and Ubiquiti’s VPN connectivity guidance against your network and ISP setup.

How to compare WireGuard and OpenVPN fairly

To learn what your own gateway can deliver, change the protocol while keeping the rest of the test as constant as possible:

  1. Record the Dream Machine model, firmware, Network application version, client device, WAN speeds, and whether the gateway is acting as a VPN server or client.
  2. Use the same client, destination VPN server, traffic route, and WAN conditions for both protocols. Avoid comparing different provider endpoints or different times of heavy congestion.
  3. Keep Threat Management, Smart Queues, and other relevant security or traffic-management features in the same state for both runs; record which are enabled.
  4. Measure download and upload separately, identify the test method and endpoint, and repeat runs. Treat unstable or sharply different results—such as the reported 3 Mbps OpenVPN bidirectional upload—as a prompt to investigate the test path rather than as a typical result.

For a VPN client, establishing a tunnel alone does not necessarily route all devices through it. Ubiquiti’s WireGuard instructions require a Traffic Route to direct selected device traffic over the tunnel. Its WireGuard client guide explains the provider configuration upload or manual setup. For OpenVPN, Ubiquiti documents uploading a provider-supplied configuration and credentials, then adding a Traffic Route; protocol selection (UDP or TCP) and credential requirements can depend on the provider. See the OpenVPN client guide.

Which should you choose?

Choose WireGuard when throughput is the priority

Ubiquiti’s qualitative guidance and the cited UDM-Pro user test both favor WireGuard for throughput. Check that your provider and client devices support it, and compare performance on the traffic path you actually use.

  • Gigabit Ethernet port for ultra-fast wired network speeds
  • Electrical power and data are transmitted using a single cable to devices such as Access Points, IP cameras or IP phones
  • Uses ISM Band to connect your computers, wireless printers, game consoles, and other Wi-Fi devices for a smooth network experience

Choose OpenVPN when compatibility or provider setup calls for it

A provider, device, or existing configuration may require OpenVPN. UniFi supports it, but Ubiquiti warns that its throughput is lower than WireGuard. Provider configuration and credentials may also determine whether the client uses UDP or TCP.

Consider Teleport for remote access

Ubiquiti recommends Teleport for mobile clients and Teleport or WireGuard over OpenVPN for desktop and laptop clients. Teleport is a separate option, not a WireGuard-versus-OpenVPN speed result; the recommendation does not establish a comparative throughput figure.

What the published figures do—and do not—tell you

Ubiquiti’s control-plane overview lists 3.5 Gbps routing performance for the UDM-Pro and UDM-SE. That is general routing performance, not a VPN throughput rating. The cited documentation does not provide a controlled, current VPN benchmark spanning the UDM, UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, and newer models. Consequently, the community results are useful as an example of the possible gap, but cannot predict your exact speed or a purchase outcome. See Ubiquiti’s control-plane overview.
