Fitbit trackers and watches normally sync to the Google Health app over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), automatically through the day and when you open the app with the device nearby. A slow or stalled sync is commonly a connection or phone/app-state problem. Start by bringing the Fitbit close, opening the app and trying a manual sync, then check Bluetooth and internet access. If a firmware update is running, that is different from an ordinary sync: Google says an update can take up to an hour.
Why is my Fitbit taking so long to sync?
A tracker or watch has to maintain a Bluetooth connection with your phone, and the phone needs internet access. Google describes a Fitbit that stops syncing as likely to have a connection issue. Distance from the phone, another nearby device paired to the Fitbit, Bluetooth settings, app or phone state, permissions, software updates, and internet access can all affect the connection.

Fitbit trackers, watches and Fitbit Aria Air use Bluetooth Low Energy to sync with phones and tablets, according to Google Health Help Center. Fitbit Aria and Aria 2 scales are exceptions: they connect directly to Wi-Fi.

How to check whether Fitbit has synced
In the Google Health app, open Connections and select your device to see its last-synced time. For ordinary syncing, the app syncs in the background during the day and when opened while the Fitbit is nearby. You can also open the app and pull down on the Today tab, or use the Sync option, to start a manual sync. Google’s guide to how Fitbit devices sync their data explains the process.
What to try when a Fitbit sync is slow or stuck
Work through these checks in order. Start with the quick connection fixes before removing pairings or setting the device up again.

- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
- Check the last-synced time. In Google Health, open Connections and the Fitbit device entry. This helps distinguish a recent sync from one that has stalled.
- Bring the Fitbit close and sync manually. Keep the device beside the phone, open Google Health, then pull down on the Today tab or choose the Sync option.
- Check both connections. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and the phone has internet access through Wi-Fi or cellular data. Bluetooth carries data from the Fitbit to the phone; internet access is also relevant to syncing.
- Reduce competing connections. Another nearby phone or tablet paired with the Fitbit may interfere. If needed, temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby devices. Google’s reconnect guidance suggests keeping the Fitbit within 2–3 feet of the phone; see Google’s sync troubleshooting steps.
- Refresh the app and devices. Force quit and reopen Google Health, cycle the phone’s Bluetooth off and on, then restart both the Fitbit and phone. Check for available phone, app and Fitbit software updates.
- Check permissions and follow your phone’s instructions. Confirm Google Health has the necessary phone permissions, then use the appropriate Android or iPhone/iPad steps in Google’s troubleshooting guide.
- Reserve disconnecting and setting up again for later. If the simpler checks do not help, Google’s advanced steps involve removing the old app/account and phone Bluetooth connection before setting up the Fitbit again. Follow the instructions for your device rather than deleting pairings at random.
If Fitbit is updating, allow more time
A firmware update can take longer than a normal sync. Google says updates can take up to an hour. While an update is running, keep the app open, make sure the Fitbit is charged, and maintain a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection. See Google’s Fitbit update troubleshooting guidance.

Does the advice differ for a Fitbit scale?
For most Fitbit trackers and watches, syncing to the phone uses Bluetooth Low Energy. Fitbit Aria and Aria 2 scales instead connect directly to Wi-Fi, so phone-to-device Bluetooth checks do not describe their data connection. Fitbit Aria Air is included among the Bluetooth-synced devices. Google’s sync overview identifies these connection types.
