Apple made the change especially visible when it removed the jack from the iPhone 7 in September 2016. Apple cited camera layout, room for other components, battery design and water resistance—but those were Apple’s stated reasons, not a single explanation established for every phone maker.
When did phones start losing the headphone jack?
A major turning point came on September 7, 2016, when Apple announced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus without a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The launch included Lightning EarPods and a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter, so owners could still use conventional wired headphones without buying wireless ones. The change meant wired audio and charging now shared the phone’s Lightning connector. Apple’s iPhone 7 announcement also introduced AirPods as a wireless option.

Apple’s move helped make jack-free phones a prominent industry trend, but it does not explain every company’s decision. A 2025 policy submission notes that Google’s first Pixel had a headphone jack and that the Pixel 2 did not. That establishes a change in Google’s product line, not that Google shared Apple’s engineering rationale. The submission does not establish one reason common to all manufacturers.

Why did Apple remove the iPhone 7 headphone jack?
In a contemporaneous interview reported by The Verge, Apple executives described the jack as a constraint in the iPhone 7’s internal layout. They said a display-driver ledge conflicted with the new camera arrangement, and moving it near the jack caused interference. Apple said removing the connector made it easier to fit the Taptic Engine, create more battery space and achieve the phone’s IP7 water-resistance rating.

Those details are Apple’s account of its own design decision. They are not proof that a 3.5 mm jack makes water resistance impossible or that every phone maker removed the connector for the same reasons.
Space and component layout
Apple’s executives argued that removing the jack freed valuable internal space amid competing demands from the camera, processors and other components. A thinner or more crowded design can make component placement difficult, but the specific camera and display-driver conflict described in the interview concerned Apple’s iPhone 7.

Battery, Taptic Engine and water resistance
Apple said the space helped accommodate a larger battery and the Taptic Engine, which provides haptic feedback. It also connected the removal to the iPhone 7’s water resistance. This was a design trade-off Apple chose for that phone, not a universal requirement for water-resistant devices.

Apple presented AirPods alongside the iPhone 7, and its executives framed the transition as a move toward a different way of delivering audio. Phil Schiller also denied that removing the jack was about digital rights management. His statement records Apple’s position; it does not independently establish every commercial motive behind the decision. The available evidence does not show that selling wireless headphones was the sole or primary reason.

What changed for people with wired headphones?
A 3.5 mm jack lets conventional analog headphones connect directly to a phone. Without one, wired listening depends on the phone’s connector or an adapter, while wireless listening uses Bluetooth. When the same port handles charging and wired audio, listening while charging may require a compatible splitter or dock; check support for the specific phone and accessory.
- Keep existing 3.5 mm headphones: Use an adapter that matches the phone’s port.
- Use wired headphones without an adapter: Choose headphones designed for the phone’s digital connector, such as USB-C on compatible models.
- Go wireless: Bluetooth headphones avoid the wired port, but need their own charging.
How to connect headphones to a current iPhone
Apple’s current guidance for USB-C iPhones lists built-in speakers, AirPods and other Bluetooth devices, AirPlay, and wired audio through USB-C. It also names a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter for conventional wired headphones. Apple’s connection guide cautions that non-compliant USB-C accessories may not work as expected.

- Check the phone’s connector. Identify whether it has USB-C or Lightning; the two are not interchangeable.
- For 3.5 mm headphones, choose the matching adapter. USB-C iPhones need a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter; older Lightning iPhones require Lightning-compatible audio accessories.
- For wired digital audio, use headphones made for that connector. Confirm compatibility with the phone before purchasing.
- For Bluetooth, pair the headphones through the phone’s Bluetooth settings. No audio adapter is needed.
