For a quick top-up, a cable is usually the safer bet. Wireless charging is better suited to a desk, nightstand or drop-and-go habit. No universal speed winner exists, though, because the result depends on your phone, charger, cable, battery state, temperature and what you’re doing while it charges. The official guidance reviewed here is Apple-specific, so the examples below use iPhones. Don’t assume they hold for every Android brand.
Which is faster?
For iPhones, Apple recommends USB Power Delivery over a suitable cable for faster wired charging. For faster wireless charging it recommends MagSafe or Qi2-certified chargers (Apple Support: About iPhone charge speeds). Both routes depend on the phone model, so check yours before judging either one.

These are that model’s stated figures, not universal rates, and Apple notes that actual results vary (iPhone 15 Plus Tech Specs). Apple’s fast-charge disclosure likewise says results depend on the adapter, settings, usage and environment. No source reviewed offers a trustworthy all-phone percentage for wired versus wireless charge time. Be skeptical of any page that quotes one.

Wattage on the box is also not charge time. A charger’s rating is the most it can supply, not what the phone accepts, and a phone’s input limit and heat management shape the real result.

Compatibility comes first
Faster wired charging needs a phone, adapter and cable that support the same route. Apple recommends a USB-C cable with USB Power Delivery for iPhone 15 and later, and a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for iPhone 14 and earlier (Apple Support). A cable that physically fits does not guarantee the phone’s top charging rate. Look up your exact model first.

What the wireless standards mean
Qi and Qi2
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced Qi v2.0 on November 15, 2023. Its Qi2 magnetic profile aligns phone and charger, while Qi v2.0 also includes a non-magnetic profile (WPC release). WPC Executive Director Paul Struhsaker said: “Plus, Qi2’s magnetic attachment also means consumers will no longer have to fuss in trying to adjust the positioning of their devices to ensure perfect alignment between phone and charger.” Alignment matters because a badly placed phone charges poorly.

Qi2 25W
On July 23, 2025, the WPC announced Qi v2.2.1 under the Qi2 25W brand. It said this delivers nearly 70% more power than original Qi2, which it described as launching in November 2023 at 15 watts (WPC release). This is a standard-level power figure. It does not mean your phone will charge at that rate, or finish sooner than a cable, unless the phone and charger both support it.

Does heat change the answer?
Yes. Apple says an iPhone that gets too warm may slow or stop charging until it cools. This protection applies to cable, MagSafe and other wireless chargers alike (Understand Thermally Limited Charging). Processor-heavy apps and streaming can also slow charging, per Apple’s charge-speed guidance. So gaming or video calls while charging can cancel much of a fast charger’s advantage, whichever method you use.
The sources reviewed don’t show wireless charging to be inherently more damaging to a battery, or wired charging to be gentler. What they support is that managing heat matters on both.

Which should you use?
- Need power quickly before leaving: use a cable with a Power Delivery adapter matched to your phone.
- Overnight or at a desk: a MagSafe or Qi2-certified wireless charger is convenient, and speed matters less.
- Using the phone heavily while charging: expect slower charging either way. A cable at least avoids placement issues.
- In a car or on a hub: check that the port can supply enough power, since shared or multiport outputs may reduce it.
Before buying, confirm your phone’s supported standard and wattage, and whether a separate adapter is required. Apple’s own figures show that “Qi2” or “MagSafe” doesn’t mean one identical wattage across models. Don’t carry iPhone numbers over to Android phones or other iPhone models.
