Most of this is in the Alexa app under More > Alexa Privacy. Amazon’s help pages say menus can vary by model, app version and country.
These settings do different jobs. The microphone-off button disables the microphone. Retention settings control what Amazon keeps after a request. Data-use and skill settings control how information is used or shared. Mixing them up leads to false assurance.

What each control actually does
| Control | Data affected | When it acts | Is the request still processed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microphone-off button (physical) | Microphone itself | Immediately; a red light indicates it is off | No, the device can’t hear you |
| Don’t save recordings | Voice recordings; existing associated recordings are deleted | After your request is processed | Yes |
| Auto-delete after 3 or 18 months | Recordings, transcripts, typed requests | After the chosen period since the last request in that chat | Yes |
| Smart Home Device History | Device status and usage information | On demand, or auto-delete at 3 or 18 months | Not applicable |
| Skill permissions | Extra account details a skill may receive | When you revoke | Not applicable |

Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute1. Open Alexa Privacy and review your history
- In the Alexa app, tap More > Alexa Privacy. Amazon also offers a web Alexa Privacy Settings dashboard.
- Open the history review. You can filter by date range, device or profile.
- Check the audio that was streamed to the cloud, the transcript of what Alexa understood, typed requests and Alexa’s responses.
- Delete any entries you don’t want kept.
This is the quickest way to spot false activations. Amazon says an Echo signals with a light or sound when it detects the wake word and starts streaming audio: “Anytime your Echo device detects the wake word, a visual or audible indicator will signal it is recording audio to stream to the cloud.” Amazon’s review guidance explicitly covers audio from a false wake.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
2. Choose a voice-history retention setting
Go to More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data. Amazon documents three choices:
Don’t save recordings
Amazon says it will “automatically delete your voice recordings after we process your requests,” and will also delete existing associated recordings. Transcripts and typed requests are not covered the same way: they are kept until a chat has been inactive for 30 days.

Delete after 3 months or 18 months
Recordings, transcripts and typed requests tied to a chat are deleted once the chosen period has passed since the last request in that chat.

Not local processing. “Don’t save” is a retention preference. Your request is still sent to and processed in Amazon’s cloud before the recording is deleted. The older “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” option was discontinued on March 28, 2025, according to the Associated Press (reported March 19, 2025). It had been limited to three U.S. device configurations with English settings, and Amazon reportedly said fewer than 0.03% of customers used it. That figure describes that one feature only, not privacy preferences generally. Ignore any older guide that tells you to enable it.
Deleting history can reduce personalization or affect features, Amazon says. It also does not necessarily delete messages or information held by a skill developer.

3. Review recording use for improvement and skill permissions
Improvement of Amazon services
In Manage Your Alexa Data, check the setting on whether your voice recordings may be used to improve services and develop features. Amazon says its supervised learning involves human review of an “extremely small sample” of interactions. It gives no percentage, so treat any specific figure you see elsewhere with caution.
Skill permissions
Open More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Skill Permissions and Ad Preferences and revoke access for skills you no longer use. Amazon says skill developers do not receive voice recordings but may receive relevant request content, such as text transcripts. If you grant permission, a skill can also get extra details such as your name or email address. Alexa+ accounts may show additional skill-management menus, so your screen may differ.
Best Value
- MEET ECHO SPOT - A sleek smart alarm clock with Alexa and big vibrant sound. Ready to help you wake up, wind down, and so much more.
- CUSTOMIZABLE SMART CLOCK - See time, weather, and song titles at a glance, control smart home devices, and more. Personalize your display with your favorite clock face and fun colors.

- EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
- KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
4. Limit ad personalization
The same area lets you turn off interest-based ads delivered by Amazon on Alexa and manage skill ad preferences. For Echo Show, Amazon points to Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data; menus on Echo Hub and Echo Show 5 may differ. This reduces personalization only. Amazon says sponsored content can still appear on Echo Show, just not based on your interests.
5. Clear or limit smart-home history
Under Manage Your Alexa Data, find Smart Home Device History. You can delete stored status and usage information or set automatic deletion at 3 or 18 months. Amazon warns this may affect smart-home features. It does not remove device type or name, your Alexa requests about those devices, or all aggregated usage-pattern information, so it trims one record rather than erasing your smart-home footprint.
6. Lock down communications, Drop In and cameras
- Drop In: Amazon UK’s help describes a per-device control plus further Drop In preferences. Turn it off on devices where nobody needs it, and review who is allowed to use it.
- Echo Show privacy blur: Amazon describes a blur preference for Drop Ins. The contact may see the camera view after the blur transitions, so it is not a block.
- Contacts: Amazon says contacts can update automatically from your phone or tablet contact list when you open the Alexa app. If you use communications features, review the list.
- Cameras: On Echo Show, check camera settings separately from audio settings.
7. Use the hardware mute when it matters
For conversations you don’t want any device to hear, press the microphone-off button. Amazon says it prevents microphone power, and the red light shows it is active. This is the only control here that stops listening rather than managing what happens afterwards. Nothing extra needs to be bought; the control is built into Echo devices.
Limits of this guide
Paths are taken from Amazon’s current help pages and the Associated Press report on the 2025 change. I have not tested a specific device, and availability can differ by model, country and software version. If a menu item is missing, search the Alexa app’s privacy section or Amazon’s help for your model.
