If your YouTube live stream is black while Wirecast plays media, first find where the picture disappears: in Wirecast, in a local recording, in YouTube’s Live Control Room, or only on the viewer’s device. That check separates a source or output problem from a delivery or playback problem—and helps you avoid changing unrelated settings.
Trace the picture through the signal path
Check the same moment in each available location, from production to viewer. Note whether audio is still present and whether the problem affects every video source or only a media clip.

- Wirecast: Inspect the media source and the program output being sent to YouTube. Is the intended clip loaded, active, and visible in the output?
- Local recording: If Wirecast is making an archive, play the portion corresponding to the black screen. Does the recording show the same fault?
- YouTube Live Control Room: Compare its preview with Wirecast’s output and check stream health messages.
- Viewer playback: Open the public watch page on another device or browser, preferably on a different connection. Check whether the same blank picture occurs there.
YouTube advises checking the stream directly in the encoder. If the encoder output itself looks bad, investigate the routed audio and video sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive. If encoder output looks healthy, examine the outbound connection and downstream playback. This is a useful diagnostic split, not a confirmed Wirecast-specific cause. If the fault is visible before YouTube playback, start with the production path rather than the viewer’s browser.

Check the media source and output
- Confirm that the intended media file or source is loaded and selected.
- Check that it is active and routed to the program output being sent to YouTube, rather than merely visible in a preview or another production layer.
- Switch to another known-working video source. If that appears correctly, compare it with the affected clip; if all sources are black, look beyond the individual media asset.
- Try a known-good test clip to determine whether the issue is limited to one file. This is a diagnostic test, not evidence that a particular codec or file defect is the cause.
Compare preview, archive, and encoder status
Check Wirecast’s error indicators and CPU load, and compare its output with the local recording. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends examining routed sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive when output looks bad. If the preview and archive disagree, note exactly where they diverge before changing settings.
If you suspect a Wirecast-specific control or media-format setting, consult current Telestream Wirecast documentation and support for your version. An older Wirecast for YouTube guide is not reliable evidence for current menus or controls, so this article does not prescribe unverified setting names.

Wirecast looks right, but YouTube is black
If Wirecast’s output and local recording look normal, compare YouTube’s Live Control Room preview with the public watch page. Review stream-health messages, then test playback on another device or browser. YouTube recommends checking audio and movement before an event, monitoring health during it, and verifying playback on channel or watch pages and mobile devices. - Live Control Room preview is also black: Recheck the encoder output and stream health; a clean local archive does not by itself establish that YouTube is receiving usable video.
- Control Room preview works, but one viewer sees black: Test the watch page on another browser, device, and connection. A problem limited to one playback environment points the next check there, not automatically to Wirecast.
- Multiple viewers on different connections see the same fault: Prioritize the encoder/output path and delivery checks. YouTube’s guidance identifies an encoder issue as a possibility when viewers broadly report stream problems.
- Local output is healthy but remote delivery is not: Check the outbound internet connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Do not reset or rotate a stream key just because video is black while a stream is already running. YouTube’s stream-key reset advice applies to a different symptom: trouble starting the encoder.

Only one browser or device shows a blank or green player
First try another browser or device and follow YouTube’s playback troubleshooting steps. For the specific case of a green YouTube video with audible sound, YouTube recommends trying another browser, turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome, and updating the graphics driver. These are viewer-side checks; they do not establish a fix for Wirecast media playback or an outgoing black stream. YouTube Help: troubleshoot video playback.
Prevent a repeat before the next broadcast
- Run an unlisted or otherwise controlled test before the event.
- Include moving video and audio similar to the planned program, then confirm both in Wirecast and in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- Monitor stream-health messages and audio/video throughout the test and broadcast. YouTube’s streaming guidance says: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
- Check the public watch page on another device, including a mobile device, and confirm that the local archive is still growing and plays correctly.
- Allow upload capacity above the combined bitrate of the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; this is a platform recommendation, not a guaranteed black-screen fix. YouTube live streaming settings.
Keep a short fault record
When diagnosing or asking for support, record what each checkpoint showed. This makes it easier to identify whether the picture first disappeared in production, recording, delivery, or viewer playback.

- Whether Wirecast preview/output and the local archive were black or normal.
- Whether audio continued, and whether all sources or only media playback were affected.
- What the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages showed.
- Whether the watch page failed on one device or across multiple viewers and connections.
- The time the problem began and any encoder error or unusual CPU load.
