That symptom alone does not prove BSNL is at fault. First compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, lower the bitrate, and check OBS’s log and YouTube’s stream-health messages; use jitter and packet-loss readings as context rather than as a universal pass/fail test.
What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. If enough frames are dropped, the stream may disconnect. This describes a network-delivery problem, but it does not identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, local software or hardware, the route to YouTube, or the ISP. Check which OBS statistic is rising before changing network settings. Network-dropped frames concern delivery to the server. Rendering lag and encoding lag are different symptoms; do not diagnose them as BSNL upload jitter solely because they occur during a live stream.
Check the stream in a controlled order
Use a private or otherwise non-public test where practical, and keep the YouTube destination and stream settings consistent when comparing results. Note the time and the conditions of each test; one speed test is not a measure of how a connection behaves throughout a live session.

- Record the OBS symptom. Note when network drops begin, their percentage, and the configured video bitrate. Save the OBS log for the session so you can review what happened rather than relying on a speed-test result alone.
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet and repeat the test. OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable. If drops improve, that points to the local wireless link as a contributor; it does not by itself rule out other causes. A Cat 6 cable is an optional way to make this comparison if you do not already have a suitable Ethernet cable.
- Lower the bitrate and repeat. Reduce OBS’s video bitrate until it is comfortably below upload capacity that remains stable during the test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guarantee. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate. A momentary peak or a single speed-test reading does not establish sustained capacity.
- Use representative content. Rehearse with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, as YouTube recommends. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test and note its messages alongside OBS’s statistics.
- Isolate software and configuration. If network drops continue, check whether a VPN, security software, network-priority or optimizer utility, outdated network driver, modem/router connection, or faulty network hardware could be involved. OBS recommends leaving Bind to IP at its default setting. As a diagnostic only, OBS suggests trying IPv4-only; if that does not help, restore IPv4 and IPv6. OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing options are Windows-only.
- Try adaptive bitrate only as a workaround. OBS offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).” It can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying problem and may reduce picture quality.
- Escalate with evidence. If the issue persists, give BSNL the test timestamps, OBS log, chosen bitrate, upload measurements taken during the problem, and the wired-versus-Wi-Fi results. If you have compared another ingest server or service, include whether the result changed. OBS recommends contacting the ISP with details if its connection troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
Set a bitrate the connection can actually sustain
YouTube’s published recommendations are targets for encoder output, not proof that a particular connection can sustain them. Match the row to the codec and frame rate you use, then make sure the chosen bitrate fits your measured, stable upload capacity. YouTube’s guidance page is Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; platform values can change, so check it when configuring a stream.

YouTube currently lists RTMP and RTMPS protocols, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are platform settings; they do not override the need to stay within the upload capacity your connection can sustain.

How to interpret upload jitter and BSNL results
Jitter is variation in packet delay; packet loss means packets do not arrive. Either can be useful context when investigating a stream, but the OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not define a universal jitter threshold that predicts OBS-to-YouTube dropped frames. Read those measurements alongside sustained upload throughput, OBS’s log, and YouTube stream health. There is no basis here for diagnosing an individual BSNL line, plan, router, service area, or route to YouTube without measurements from that connection.
TRAI’s 2025 drive-test reports illustrate why sampled results should not be treated as a fixed-broadband diagnosis. The Kolkata report records 74.75 ms jitter and 18.56% packet loss in its overall BSNL data-performance summary, while a separate sampled site records 5.54 ms jitter and 3.60% packet loss. These are report-specific mobile-network samples, not measurements of an individual subscriber’s broadband.

The Uttar Pradesh East report likewise varies by sampled location. At Government Polytechnic Unnao, its BSNL mobile sample reports average upload throughput of 5.27 Mbps, jitter of 7.03 ms, and packet loss of 0.30%. At Kanpur Airport, the BSNL entries include 10.39 Mbps upload throughput and 100% packet loss; the report notes failed YouTube and ping tests for the relevant table. Neither report establishes that BSNL fixed broadband is inherently unstable or determines what is happening on your connection.
When another destination is a useful test
If you can safely compare the same setup against another YouTube ingest server or another streaming destination, a changed result can help show whether the issue is specific to a route or destination. Keep the bitrate and other conditions as similar as possible. A change in outcome is diagnostic evidence, not a guaranteed fix or proof of responsibility; include it with your logs and timestamp when discussing the problem with BSNL.

No. A speed test is a snapshot. Repeat tests during comparable stream conditions and check whether the upload remains stable while OBS sends the stream.

The cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not specify a universal jitter cutoff for an OBS-to-YouTube stream.
