Verdict: wkhtmltopdf can still serve controlled, verified legacy HTML-to-PDF workflows, especially when an existing process relies on its command-line features. It uses Qt WebKit, however, and the project’s downloads page identifies 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as its stable series. Build and operating-system differences can change output and available features. Treat it as a compatibility choice—not a current browser renderer—and do not feed it untrusted HTML.
What wkhtmltopdf does—and its maintenance status
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source command-line tool that converts HTML pages to PDF; its companion, wkhtmltoimage, converts HTML to image formats. Both use Qt WebKit. The project’s overview describes the tools and their settings.

The project downloads page calls version 0.12.6 the stable series and gives its release date as June 11, 2020: official downloads. The upstream GitHub repository has been archived read-only since January 2, 2023: wkhtmltopdf on GitHub. Those facts indicate an aging upstream project, not that every downstream package or fork has necessarily remained unchanged. Check the exact binary you deploy rather than assuming all packages labeled wkhtmltopdf are identical.
Rendering quality: what to expect
There is no single meaningful “HTML support” score for wkhtmltopdf. Its output depends on the page’s CSS, JavaScript, fonts, images, pagination needs, and the particular binary and environment. Because its rendering engine is Qt WebKit rather than a contemporary browser engine, modern dynamic pages may not render as they do in a current browser. The project maintainer specifically suggests Puppeteer for pages that depend on dynamic JavaScript; that is a use-case recommendation, not a measured quality ranking.

Builds can behave differently
Some wkhtmltopdf features rely on project-patched Qt. Official downloads warn that builds compiled without those patches behave differently. Distribution packages may therefore lack capabilities available in patched builds, even when the command name and version appear similar. Fonts and fontconfig/freetype, operating-system libraries, and packaging also affect rendering and deployment.
When assessing a result, record the version, operating system and version, package source, whether the binary reports patched Qt, installed fonts, and relevant command-line flags. For an output defect, reduce the page to a reproducible HTML/CSS/JavaScript case; the project’s issue-reporting and status guidance asks for version, OS details, and a reproducible test case.
Useful controls are not rendering guarantees
The 0.12.6 command-line manual documents options for combining pages and covers, generating a table of contents, adding headers and footers, controlling JavaScript wait behavior, and adjusting smart shrinking. The available features depend on the build.

--javascript-delaywaits a specified interval before conversion.--window-statuswaits for a page to reach a specified JavaScript window status.- Smart shrinking is enabled by default; the manual documents how to disable it.
Waiting longer or disabling shrinking can address particular problems, but neither ensures that an arbitrary client-rendered application has finished loading or will paginate correctly. Test representative pages, including long pages and the specific headers, footers, links, and page breaks your documents require.
Is wkhtmltopdf fast?
The official project material reviewed does not provide a current, controlled speed comparison, so there is no supported basis here for calling wkhtmltopdf categorically fast, slow, or faster than Chrome or Puppeteer. Runtime depends on the input, assets, fonts, wait strategy, page count, machine, and build.
If speed determines your choice, benchmark the workload you actually need and report enough detail for the result to be meaningful:

- Exact binary version, build, package source, OS, and container or machine configuration.
- Representative input pages and whether their assets are local, cached, or fetched over a network.
- Cold versus warm process behavior, page count, fonts, and JavaScript wait settings.
- Repeated runs, with the median and spread—not just a best-case time.
- The same workload on the maintained alternative you are considering.
Without those controls, timing anecdotes should not be treated as a reliable comparison.

Is wkhtmltopdf safe for untrusted HTML?
No. Do not use wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML. The project’s downloads page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Read the full official warning.
In a 2020 project-status discussion, maintainer Ashish Kulkarni explained that wkhtmltopdf depends on WebKit1’s in-process API, and stated that Qt 4 had not been supported since 2015 and the WebKit in it had not been updated since 2012. Those are dated statements about the engine’s history, not a current inventory of every fork.

Confinement is a backstop, not permission to process hostile input
The project’s AppArmor guidance recommends operating-system confinement to limit filesystem access and command execution. It also cautions that blocking local file access alone may not be sufficient against a vulnerability in a prebuilt binary. AppArmor applies to distributions that support it; Red Hat-family systems use SELinux. Use sanitization and isolation as defense in depth, but do not treat them as making arbitrary untrusted HTML safe.

It may fit a controlled legacy workflow
Retaining wkhtmltopdf can be reasonable when the HTML is controlled, the current output has been verified, the deployment’s exact build is known, and replacing it would disrupt an established process. Its CLI includes established document features such as covers, tables of contents, headers, footers, and JavaScript wait controls, subject to build support.

The maintainer recommends WeasyPrint or the commercial Prince for controlled report generation, and Puppeteer for pages that rely on dynamic JavaScript. These are suggestions for different use cases, not independently measured rankings. Compare candidates against your actual needs:
