WinZip 7.0 was released in 1998. It was Nico Mak Computing’s Windows archive utility for creating and extracting ZIP files, with documented support for CAB, ISO, JAR, TAR and GZIP archives. The exact day of the initial release is not firmly established: archival listings commonly place it in 1998, while a contemporary catalog dates the 7.0 SR-1 revision to 24 October 1998.
When was WinZip 7.0 released?
The original WinZip 7.0 release belongs to 1998. A 5 October 1998 date appears in archival secondary listings, but it should be treated cautiously rather than as a confirmed launch day. The better-documented milestone is WinZip 7.0 SR-1, listed with a revision date of 24 October 1998. That catalog entry describes the software as shareware priced at $29.

WinZip 7.0 is therefore a late-1990s release, not a current product generation. It predates modern Windows security models, 64-bit editions and today’s cloud-integrated archive workflows.
Can WinZip 7.0 run on Windows 95 or Windows NT?
Yes, within its historical operating-system requirements, but the archival documentation differs slightly by build and source.
#1 Best Overall
- Perfect quality CD digital audio extraction (ripping)
- Fastest CD Ripper available
- Extract audio from CDs to wav or Mp3
- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more

| Source or build | Documented compatibility |

| Archived WinZip 7 README | Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 and later |
| WinWorld’s 32-bit archival description | Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51 and later |
| Package note | A separate 16-bit WinZip 6.3 build is included in the archival listing |
For a historically faithful installation, the README describes running the self-extracting WINZIP70.EXE installer or installing from floppy disk. It also says users could install over an earlier WinZip copy. These instructions apply to the period software, not to supported installation on current Windows releases.
What did WinZip 7.0 add?
WinZip 7.0’s central task remained compression and extraction, but its format coverage and user interface were broader than a ZIP-only utility.

Archive formats
- ZIP creation and extraction
- Microsoft Cabinet (CAB)
- ISO
- JAR
- TAR
- GZIP
The format list comes from archival product documentation. A December 1998 EXE Magazine scan additionally reported CAB support as a 7.0 addition.
Interface and workflow changes
That period magazine report described a configurable toolbar with up to 21 functions, an optional Internet Explorer 4.0-style “one click open” interface, an improved print facility and ZIP-comment support. Because these details come from OCR-derived contemporary magazine material rather than a surviving official feature matrix, they are best understood as period reporting.

How much compression did WinZip 7.0 provide?
WinZip 7.0 compressed files into archives, primarily to reduce storage requirements and make transfers easier. A 1999 Government of Canada instructional publication said compressed files “can be up to 80 percent smaller than the sum of the originals.” That is a general educational maximum, not a guaranteed result for every file type: already-compressed photographs, videos and installers usually compress far less than plain text or uncompressed data.
The 32-bit download in WinWorld’s 1998 listing is shown as 1.72 MB. That figure is the listed installer file size, not the amount of data the program can compress or a measure of compression performance.

Is WinZip 7.0 still supported?
No. WinZip 7.0 is obsolete and outside the vendor’s current support lifecycle. WinZip’s lifecycle information lists WinZip 30 as generally available on 16 September 2025 and WinZip 31 on 16 September 2026. Those current generations are separated from version 7.0 by decades of operating-system, security and format changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- No current security-update commitment should be assumed for WinZip 7.0.
- Its Windows 95/98 and NT-era dependencies make it unsuitable as a primary tool on a modern computer.
- Opening untrusted archives with obsolete software carries avoidable security risk.
- Modern archivers generally provide better integration with current Windows versions and contemporary archive formats.
Where can you find the old WinZip 7.0 installer?
Historical copies are preserved in software-archive listings such as WinWorld, and the archived WinZip 7 README documents the original installer names and media. Availability, file integrity, licensing status and redistribution rights can vary by archive. Verify a download’s provenance and scan it before running it, and use an isolated period-correct virtual machine if you need to reproduce a Windows 95 or Windows NT environment.
Best Value
- Intuitive interface of a conventional FTP client
- Easy and Reliable FTP Site Maintenance.

Do not confuse an archival copy with an officially supported download. The historical shareware price and 1998 licensing terms do not establish a current right to redistribute or commercially resell the program.
WinZip 7.0 versus a modern archiver
| Consideration | WinZip 7.0 | Modern archiver |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | Windows 95/98 and NT-era systems documented | Designed for currently supported Windows releases |
| Formats | ZIP, CAB, ISO, JAR, TAR and GZIP documented | Format coverage depends on the product and version |
| Security maintenance | No current support commitment | Active maintenance varies by vendor |
| Interface integration | Toolbar and optional IE4-style interface reported for its era | Current Windows integration and usability features |
| Licensing | 1998 catalog listed shareware at $29 | Terms depend on the current product |
| Support | Archived documentation and community preservation | Vendor support may be available, depending on edition |
The available historical records do not provide a controlled, like-for-like benchmark of compression ratio or speed, so no performance winner can be stated from those records alone.
The Bottom Line
WinZip 7.0 is a 1998 Windows archive utility best remembered for ZIP handling, expanded format support and late-1990s interface improvements. It can be useful for software preservation, but it is unsupported and should not be treated as a secure modern archiver.
