Xbox confirmed another 268 role eliminations on September 22, while Microsoft is also preparing to report its business in two segments beginning in fiscal 2027.
What Microsoft confirmed on September 22
Matt Booty, an Xbox executive, said Xbox was eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and the Xbox Game Studios management and central-functions layer. Xbox said the actions completed since July, including studio divestitures, represented roughly three-quarters of the previously announced restructuring.

The announcement describes work still in progress rather than a finished reorganization. Layoff totals, studio arrangements and the completion percentage may change as fiscal 2027 continues.

How the July plan and September confirmation fit together

These figures should not be added together. The 3,200 number is a July plan for fiscal 2027, the 268 number is a later Xbox action, and the AP figure is an independently reported company-wide total. Their scopes and dates can overlap.
What changes for Xbox studios and franchises
Activision takes on more studio responsibility
Activision will expand its remit to include World’s Edge and Rare. Xbox did not enumerate all four studios referenced in the July plan as moving to new management, so additional transfers should not be assumed from the September announcement.

A new team will develop the next Halo
Activision will develop the next Halo title through a new purpose-built team. Xbox described that team as separate from ongoing development and from Activision’s Call of Duty plans. The announcement does not provide a release date, platform list or other launch timetable for the next Halo.
Why management layers are being reduced
Xbox said some parts of the business had as many as 14 management layers. The reset targets no more than five layers and, where possible, three. The stated goal is a flatter structure, which changes reporting lines and decision-making responsibilities rather than representing a separate product announcement.

“We are beginning the most significant restructure in XBOX history.”
The same memo said, “Our business today is not healthy,” framing the reductions and studio changes as a response to Xbox’s internal business conditions.

Is Microsoft restructuring beyond Xbox?
Yes. A September 2, 2026 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says Microsoft will use two reportable segments beginning in fiscal 2027:

This is a company-wide reporting change, not simply another Xbox management move. It will affect how Microsoft presents financial performance, while the Xbox actions concern staffing, studios and franchise development.
What employees and players should watch next
- Further Xbox role announcements as the fiscal 2027 restructuring proceeds.
- Clarification of which studios report through Activision and other new management arrangements.
- More information about the purpose-built Halo team and its development plans.
- Microsoft’s first fiscal 2027 financial reports using the Agents and Infra and Devices and Consumer segments.
For now, Microsoft has confirmed the direction and major components of the reset, but it has not published a final organization chart or a complete list of every studio transfer.
