Extended Security Updates

Microsoft Mainstream vs. Extended Support: What Each Phase Covers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mainstream Support is Microsoft’s full-support phase: eligible products receive security updates, ordinary bug fixes, new features, design-change consideration, and assisted support. Extended Support follows when offered and keeps security updates and paid support, but normally ends new features and non-security fixes. The common Fixed Lifecycle pattern is about five years of Mainstream Support followed by up to five years of Extended Support, although the exact dates depend on the product, edition, servicing level and policy.

What Mainstream Support includes

Mainstream Support is the first phase in Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy. During it, Microsoft generally provides the broadest set of product rights:

  • Security updates for vulnerabilities covered by the product’s servicing policy.
  • Non-security updates, such as reliability and compatibility fixes, when Microsoft determines they are appropriate.
  • Incident support and paid technical support options.
  • Self-help documentation and online knowledge resources.
  • The ability to request design changes and new features, with acceptance still at Microsoft’s discretion.

Microsoft’s policy commonly allows approximately five years of Mainstream Support, but that is a planning pattern rather than a guarantee for every product. A supported service pack, cumulative update or other servicing level may be required to receive the full entitlement.

What changes in Extended Support

“Extended” does not mean that the product remains fully supported. It is a narrower phase that follows Mainstream Support where Microsoft offers it.

  • Security updates continue for supported products, normally without an additional charge.
  • Paid technical support remains available, subject to the product and support agreement.
  • Self-help resources remain available.
  • Microsoft normally stops accepting requests for new features or design changes.
  • Routine non-security fixes and warranty support are no longer ordinary entitlements.

The usual Fixed Policy pattern is five years of Mainstream Support plus up to five years of Extended Support. Product-specific lifecycle records override this general pattern, and some products use Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy instead.

Side-by-side comparison

Capability Mainstream Support Extended Support After end of support
Security updates Available for supported products Available for supported products Generally unavailable unless a qualifying paid program applies
Non-security updates Available when Microsoft provides them Not available as a normal entitlement Unavailable
New features and design changes Requests may be accepted Requests are not accepted Not accepted
Paid technical support Available under applicable plans Available under applicable plans Only where a separate program applies
Self-help Available Available Online material may remain, but assisted support ends

How long does Microsoft support a product?

There is no single support period for every Microsoft product. The “five plus five” rule is a useful expectation for many Fixed Policy products, not a substitute for checking the lifecycle record. Dates can differ by product family, version, edition, release channel and servicing level.

  • JOIN YOUR BUSINESS OR SCHOOL DOMAIN for easy access to network files, servers, and printers.
  • OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC WITH NO PRIOR VERSION of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
  • OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE PRODUCT SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.

Check the exact lifecycle entry

  1. Open Microsoft’s product lifecycle search.
  2. Search for the exact product and version, not just a family name such as “Windows” or “Office.”
  3. Confirm the edition, release or build, Mainstream Support end date and Extended Support end date.
  4. Read any notes about required service packs, cumulative updates, subscription status or servicing channels.
  5. Record the dates for each deployment you operate and review them during upgrade planning.

A product can be within its published phase while an unpatched service pack or unsupported build is outside the conditions for receiving updates.

What happens when Extended Support ends?

Microsoft defines the end of support for a Fixed Policy product as the end of its Extended Support phase. Under the normal lifecycle, customers should then expect no new security updates, no non-security updates and no assisted technical support. Microsoft’s Windows guidance summarizes the consequence for an operating system: once it reaches end of support, customers no longer receive technical assistance, software updates or security fixes.

  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

Risks of continuing to run it

  • Newly discovered vulnerabilities remain unpatched.
  • Application, driver and hardware vendors may stop testing against the old platform.
  • Compliance, cyber-insurance and procurement requirements may no longer be met.
  • Support incidents become harder to resolve because the platform is outside its normal service window.

What to do before the date

  • Inventory versions, editions, builds and dependencies.
  • Prioritize internet-facing and business-critical systems.
  • Test the target release with line-of-business applications, drivers and management tools.
  • Budget licensing, hardware replacement, migration labor and user training.
  • Define a rollback and backup plan, then schedule the change before the deadline rather than on it.

Can Extended Security Updates keep an old Windows version secure?

Extended Security Updates (ESU) are a paid, temporary bridge for certain legacy products when Microsoft makes the program available. ESU can provide Critical and/or Important security updates for up to three years after the product’s normal end of support. Eligibility, enrollment method, pricing and geographic availability vary, so they must be verified for the specific product and organization.

ESU does not extend the product’s lifecycle. It does not add features, restore non-security fixes or provide general technical support beyond the original timeline. Microsoft describes ESU as a last-resort measure, not a replacement for moving to a supported release.

  • Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
  • Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
  • Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.

When ESU can be reasonable

  • A migration is technically complex and cannot finish before end of support.
  • A specialized application or regulated workload needs a short transition period.
  • The organization has a funded, dated remediation plan and can isolate the remaining systems.

When ESU is a poor strategy

  • You need ongoing feature development or ordinary bug fixes.
  • You expect vendor support to continue merely because security patches are available.
  • You have no fixed migration deadline and would be renewing a temporary exception indefinitely.

How to compare two Microsoft versions

Use the same decision axes for each release:

  1. Lifecycle dates: compare Mainstream and Extended Support end dates for the exact edition and build.
  2. Policy: determine whether the product follows Fixed Lifecycle or Modern Lifecycle rules.
  3. Servicing conditions: check update channels, minimum builds and service-pack requirements.
  4. Post-end options: verify whether paid support or ESU exists, its cost and its eligibility rules.
  5. Migration impact: assess application compatibility, hardware readiness, testing effort and user disruption.

Do not infer a Windows schedule for SQL Server, .NET, Microsoft 365 or another product. Each product’s published lifecycle and servicing model controls the answer.

Key takeaways for planning

  • Mainstream Support offers the broadest mix of security, non-security and feature-related rights.
  • Extended Support preserves security updates and selected paid support, but removes normal access to new features and non-security fixes.
  • The common planning assumption is roughly five years in each phase, not a universal promise.
  • After end of support, ordinary security updates and assisted support stop.
  • ESU can buy up to three years of security-update coverage for eligible products, but it is a paid, temporary bridge rather than a lifecycle extension.
  • Always verify the exact product lifecycle entry, edition, release and servicing level before setting a deadline.
