On a standalone Windows XP Home or Professional computer, the quickest documented method is to run control userpasswords2, clear the requirement to enter a user name and password, and supply that account’s password when prompted. Restart XP to test it. Automatic logon stores credentials and removes the normal access barrier, so use it only on a physically secured, single-purpose machine.
Enable autologon with the XP user-account dialog
This method is intended for a computer that is not joined to a domain. You need an account that has a password, and you must be able to sign in with administrative rights to change the setting.

- Click Start, choose Run, type
control userpasswords2, and press Enter. - In User Accounts, select the account that should sign in automatically.
- Clear Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
- Click Apply.
- When Automatically Log On appears, enter the selected account’s password in both password fields. Confirm the user name shown is correct.
- Click OK, then OK again to close User Accounts.
- Restart Windows XP. The selected account should reach the desktop without a logon prompt.
If the check box is unavailable or the wrong account appears, cancel rather than guessing. Domain policy, account restrictions, or an incorrect account selection can prevent this standalone-computer procedure from applying.

Download legacy software only from a source you can verify as Microsoft or a trustworthy archival provider. Do not use an unverified repackaged executable on a computer that will hold sensitive information.
To skip an enabled autologon for one startup, hold Shift while Windows is starting. This bypasses that automatic sign-in without permanently disabling the setting.

Configure the Winlogon registry values
Registry editing is useful when the dialog is unavailable, but it is easier to misconfigure and exposes the credentials more directly. Back up the registry before making changes.

Close Registry Editor and restart XP. If DefaultPassword is missing, Windows XP changes AutoAdminLogon from 1 back to 0, so autologon stops working. A typo in the user name, domain, or password likewise causes a normal logon prompt or a failed sign-in.

Which method should you choose?
| Method | Ease of use | Credential handling | Best fit | How to undo it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
control userpasswords2 |
Guided Windows dialog | Uses XP’s autologon settings; the password is stored for automatic sign-in | Standalone XP Home or Professional computer | Run the dialog again and require users to enter a password |
| Sysinternals Autologon | Guided Microsoft utility | Stores the password as an encrypted LSA secret; an administrator can still retrieve and decrypt it | Users who want a Microsoft-provided Enable/Disable interface | Open Autologon and click Disable |
| Winlogon registry | Manual and error-prone | Microsoft’s general registry procedure can leave the password in clear text | Advanced troubleshooting or scripted legacy setups | Set AutoAdminLogon to 0 and remove or clear the stored password |
| XP PowerToys Tweak UI | Legacy graphical interface | Maps to the same Winlogon values | Existing, trusted XP installations only | Disable Autologon in Tweak UI or revert the registry values |
Tweak UI’s Autologon page is a legacy Windows XP PowerToys option. Because old installers are frequently mirrored, obtain one only from a source you trust; the modern Sysinternals utility is the more defensible guided option when it runs on the machine.
Security consequences
Autologon is an access-control bypass, not merely a cosmetic removal of the welcome screen. Anyone who can physically start the computer can reach the selected account and its files, and potentially any network resources that account can access. Microsoft warns that, even when the password is encrypted in the registry as an LSA secret, a user with administrative rights can easily retrieve and decrypt it. The general registry procedure may store the password in plain text; NIST’s Windows XP security checklist likewise describes AutoAdminLogon as bypassing the password prompt with a clear-text registry credential.
