Microsoft Office 15 was the development codename for the Office generation released commercially as Office 2013. Microsoft previewed it in 2012 with an emphasis on touch and stylus input, cloud-connected work, social features and collaboration. Office 2013 itself reached the end of support on April 11, 2023: its applications may still run, but Microsoft no longer provides security updates, bug fixes or technical support.
What “Office 15” meant
“Office 15” was not the final retail name of a separate Office edition. It was Microsoft’s internal codename for the next generation of Office products and services. In its January 30, 2012 technical-preview announcement, Microsoft Office development executive PJ Hough described it as “the codename for the next generation of the Office products and services.”
The preview was a development program, not a current product category. Early access was limited to selected customers under nondisclosure agreements, so references to “Office 15 Preview” describe a historical stage before release.

Microsoft’s lifecycle record identifies January 9, 2013 as Office 2013’s original release start. Therefore, use Office 15 when discussing the preview and Office 2013 when discussing the released suite, licensing or support.

What Microsoft promoted in the preview
The July 2012 unveiling was Microsoft’s launch positioning, not an independent usability test or a guarantee of compatibility with current devices.
Touch, pen and traditional input
Microsoft said the new Office was designed to work with touch, stylus, mouse and keyboard, including emerging Windows devices. The message was that people could switch between direct manipulation and conventional desktop input rather than treating touch as a separate edition.
Reading, note-taking and meetings
The announcement framed reading documents, taking notes, participating in meetings and communicating with colleagues as central modern scenarios. These descriptions explain what Microsoft wanted the preview to represent; they do not establish how well every workflow performed in practice.
PowerPoint Presenter View
Microsoft highlighted a Presenter View showing the current and upcoming slides, elapsed time and speaker notes. Those elements were intended to help a presenter manage a talk while the audience saw the presentation itself.

Communication and collaboration
The preview announcement also described Lync capabilities for multiparty HD video, shared OneNote notebooks and a virtual whiteboard. Microsoft connected these features to cloud and social working patterns, including sharing and group communication.
Office 365 connection
Microsoft discussed subscription offerings that would include the 2013 application editions. Those were historical launch-era plans; do not treat their pricing, availability or terms as current.
Can you still use Office 2013?
Yes. Microsoft’s support guidance says Office 2013 applications can continue to function after the end-of-support date. April 11, 2023 did not mean that Word, Excel, PowerPoint or the other applications automatically stopped launching.
However, continued operation is not the same as supported or secure software. Since April 11, 2023, Microsoft has supplied no Office 2013 technical support, bug fixes or security fixes. Newly discovered vulnerabilities and defects therefore do not receive the normal vendor remediation for that release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Office 2013 still supported?
No. Office 2013 support ended on April 11, 2023, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle documentation. An existing installation may remain usable, but it is outside Microsoft’s supported lifecycle and should not be described as receiving ongoing protection or maintenance.
What to do if Office 2013 is still installed
- Inventory what you use. Identify the Office applications, files, add-ins and work or school services that your device depends on.
- Check your requirements. Compare the need for desktop applications, collaboration and cloud features, device and operating-system compatibility, and whether a subscription or non-subscription license is appropriate.
- Plan a supported replacement. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance points users toward supported Office software, including Microsoft 365 Apps. The suitable edition depends on your organization, device and feature requirements.
- Protect the transition. Keep backups of important documents, confirm that required add-ins and workflows have supported alternatives, and schedule the change before removing the old installation.
Microsoft does not establish in these materials that a particular current plan fits every computer or user. Check the current requirements and licensing terms for the supported product you choose.
Does an Office 15 Preview download still make sense?
Office 15 Preview is a historical development build, not a supported route to Office today. The available evidence does not establish that archived installers remain obtainable, can still be activated, or work reliably with current operating systems. Even if an old installer can be found, it would not restore Microsoft support or security servicing. For a working installation, use a currently supported Office release instead.
