Windows Vista had six principal editions: Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. They were divided by audience and distribution rather than by a simple “cheap to expensive” performance ladder: Starter targeted lower-cost PCs in emerging markets, Home editions targeted households, Business and Enterprise targeted organizations, and Ultimate combined the major consumer and business feature groups.
Vista is now a legacy operating system. Microsoft ended mainstream support on April 11, 2012, and extended support on April 12, 2017, so it should not be used for ordinary internet-connected computing.
What were the different Windows Vista editions?
| Edition | Primary audience | Notable features or limits | Typical distribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Entry-level PCs in emerging markets | Basic computing; Microsoft’s launch description specified 32-bit only | Emerging-market PCs |
| Home Basic | Households with basic needs | Web, email and documents; Search Explorer, Sidebar and Parental Controls | Retail and new PCs |
| Home Premium | Home, entertainment and mobile users | Aero, Media Center and TV functions, Xbox 360 connection, Tablet PC features and DVD authoring | Retail and new PCs |
| Business | Organizations of different sizes | Business search and document organization, Tablet PC features, and organization-focused management and security | Retail, new PCs and business channels |
| Enterprise | Large global organizations and complex IT environments | BitLocker, Virtual PC Express compatibility support, Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications, and worldwide-language/deployment-image tools | Qualifying Software Assurance or Enterprise Agreement customers |
| Ultimate | Users wanting the broadest combined feature set | Microsoft’s combined entertainment, mobility and business-oriented feature families | Retail and new PCs |
Microsoft described the launch lineup as three consumer editions (Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate), two business editions (Business and Enterprise), and Starter for emerging markets. All editions except Starter could be supplied in 32-bit or 64-bit forms according to customer requirements.
Vista Home Basic vs. Home Premium
Home Basic covered everyday household tasks such as browsing, email and document work. Home Premium included those capabilities but added the features that made Vista a home-entertainment and mobile edition.

- Choose Home Basic for a basic household PC where Media Center, Aero, DVD creation and TV features are unnecessary.
- Choose Home Premium when you need Media Center, television support, Xbox 360 connectivity, Tablet PC functionality, or DVD burning and authoring.
“Better” therefore depends on the hardware and features required; Home Premium was not a universal speed upgrade over Home Basic.
Business and Enterprise: what changed?
Business
Business was aimed at organizations that needed work-oriented search, document organization, Tablet PC support and management/security positioning without the specialized global-deployment package sold through Enterprise channels.
Enterprise
Enterprise added controls and compatibility tools for larger or more complex environments. Its named differentiators included BitLocker Drive Encryption, Virtual PC Express, the Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications, and tools for worldwide languages and deployment images. It was not a normal retail purchase; Microsoft limited it to qualifying Software Assurance or Enterprise Agreement customers.

Backup and recovery differences
Microsoft’s edition comparison shows a practical split between file-level protection and full-system recovery:
| Capability | Included editions |
|---|---|
| Ad hoc backup and recovery of user files and folders | All listed editions |
| Scheduled file backup and network backup | Home Premium, Business, Enterprise and Ultimate |
| Complete PC image-based Backup and Restore | Business, Enterprise and Ultimate |
| Shadow Copy | Business, Enterprise and Ultimate |
| Encrypting File System | Business, Enterprise and Ultimate, according to Microsoft’s reviewer-guide comparison excerpt |
The exact feature set can vary by SKU and release documentation, so these comparisons should not be treated as an exhaustive matrix for every service-pack-era component.
Architecture, N editions and other variants
Starter was described at launch as 32-bit only. The other main editions could be obtained in 32-bit or 64-bit versions. Microsoft’s later lifecycle records also list variants such as Home Basic N, Business N and 64-bit editions. The six familiar names therefore describe the principal consumer-facing lineup, not every regional or regulatory SKU.

Is Vista Ultimate better than Home Premium?
Ultimate was Microsoft’s top combined offering, bringing together the entertainment and mobility capabilities associated with Home Premium and the business-oriented capabilities associated with the business editions. It made sense for a user who genuinely needed both groups. For a home user interested only in Media Center, TV, Xbox connectivity or DVD authoring, Home Premium supplied the relevant features without making Ultimate automatically “better.”
Historical upgrade paths and prices
Microsoft’s Windows Anytime Upgrade program provided an online route from one Vista edition to another. Its January 2007 U.S. suggested retail prices were historical launch figures, not current offers:
