Why Do I Receive Event ID 256 in the System Log?

Event ID 256 is not a universal Windows error. Identify the provider and full message first; the documented PlugPlayManager warning is usually ignorable, while DPTF and other providers can mean something entirely different.

Event ID 256 has no single meaning. Windows reuses event numbers across providers, so the source or provider, log channel, and complete message determine whether it is harmless or needs attention. In the documented PlugPlayManager case, Event ID 256 is a warning that a program did not answer a Plug and Play device-interface notification within 30 seconds. Microsoft says that legacy warning can be ignored unless it coincides with a real device or startup problem.

Why the number alone is not enough

An event ID is only meaningful in the context of its provider. Microsoft’s event-log guidance notes that the same numeric ID can be associated with different sources; interpretation should start with the source and surrounding events, not the number by itself.

Provider/source Log channel Documented meaning Typical response
PlugPlayManager System A notification recipient failed to respond within 30 seconds after a Plug and Play device-interface notification. Microsoft’s archived guidance describes this as a warning that can be ignored when there is no related symptom.
DPTF (Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework) Application A separate Event ID 256 example involving an _OSC/ESIF error. Use the DPTF message and the affected platform’s driver or firmware documentation; do not apply the PlugPlayManager interpretation automatically.
Any other provider System, Application, or another channel Not established by the number alone. Investigate the provider’s full message and nearby events.

What PlugPlayManager Event ID 256 means

Microsoft’s archived Windows 2000/XP-era documentation describes the message as: “Timed out sending notification of device interface change to window of [program or service name and/or GUID].” Its explanation is that an application registered to receive Plug and Play device-interface notifications did not respond within 30 seconds of receiving one.

The timeout concerns delivery of a notification to the registered application. It does not, by itself, prove that the device has failed, that data was lost, or that malware is present. Microsoft classifies this documented case as a warning and says it can be ignored.

Is Event ID 256 dangerous?

Usually, not when the entry is the documented PlugPlayManager warning and Windows is otherwise working normally. Treat it as a diagnostic clue rather than a diagnosis. A different provider can use the same ID for an unrelated condition, and a recurring entry matters more when it lines up with a symptom such as a device disconnecting, delayed startup, missing hardware, thermal-management problems, or an application error.

There is no general prevalence or failure-rate statistic for Event ID 256. The only specific numeric threshold in the documented PlugPlayManager case is the 30-second response timeout.

How to identify which Event ID 256 you have

  1. Open Event Viewer by searching for it from the Start menu.
  2. For a system-log entry, expand Windows Logs and select System. If the entry is in another channel, open that channel instead.
  3. Open the Event ID 256 record and record the Log Name, Source or Provider, Level, Task Category, timestamp, and event record ID.
  4. Copy the complete text on the General tab. The Details tab, including the XML view, can reveal provider names, device identifiers, or status values that are not shown in the summary.
  5. Inspect events immediately before and after it. Look for entries from the same provider or for a device, service, or application event at the same time.

What to do after you capture the context

If the source is PlugPlayManager

When the full message is the documented device-interface notification timeout, no corrective action is required if there is no user-visible problem. Monitor whether it appears at the same time as a device failure, repeated reconnect, or startup delay. If such a symptom exists, troubleshoot that specific device, service, or application rather than trying to “repair” the event number.

If the source is DPTF

DPTF Event ID 256 is a different case recorded in the Application log and involves an _OSC/ESIF error. Use the full DPTF text, your computer manufacturer’s support material, and the applicable Intel or platform driver and firmware guidance. The PlugPlayManager timeout explanation does not establish the cause of a DPTF entry.

If the source is another vendor or Windows component

Do not install a random driver, delete event logs, or change services solely because the number is 256. Search the exact provider name and message in that product’s documentation, then correlate the timestamp with the affected hardware or application. A vendor-specific remedy might involve a driver, firmware, service, or application update, but the correct choice cannot be determined from the event ID alone.

When further troubleshooting is justified

  • The same provider logs Event ID 256 repeatedly during a reproducible problem.
  • A device disappears, reconnects, fails to start, or reports errors at the same time.
  • Boot, resume, shutdown, or application launch is delayed when the event appears.
  • Nearby events identify a failed service, driver, device, or firmware operation.

If none of those conditions applies and the entry is the legacy PlugPlayManager warning, recording it and continuing to monitor is generally sufficient.

What information to include when asking for help

Provide the Windows edition and version, the log channel, provider/source, level, timestamp, complete General text, Details/XML text, and the events immediately around it. Also state whether there is a concrete symptom and which device or application is involved. This prevents advice for one provider from being incorrectly applied to another.
