Microsoft identifies it as WINLOGON_FATAL_ERROR: the Winlogon process terminated unexpectedly. The right next step depends on whether you saw a blue screen or a separate update-installation message.
What does Windows error 0xc000021a mean?
Microsoft’s documentation for bug check 0xC000021A defines it as WINLOGON_FATAL_ERROR and says, “The Winlogon process terminated unexpectedly.” Winlogon is a Windows user-mode process, and Microsoft notes that a user-mode subsystem such as Winlogon or CSRSS can be fatally compromised. Mismatched system files are another documented possible cause.

Is 0xc000021a the Windows Update installation error?
Not necessarily. Microsoft describes 0xC000021A as a Windows bug check, typically shown on a blue screen. Its general Windows Update troubleshooting guide lists different codes—0x80070002, 0x80070003, and 0x80070057—as examples of update-installation failures.

Work from what appeared on screen:
- Blue screen or restart loop showing 0xC000021A: investigate a stop error and startup stability.
- Windows starts, but an update reports failure: record the update’s actual error code and KB number, then troubleshoot Windows Update.
- Both happened: note their order and timing. The update may have preceded the crash, but that does not prove it caused the stop error.
Choose the troubleshooting path that matches what you can see
| Observed problem | First focus | Useful details to record |
|---|---|---|
| Windows starts; update installation fails | Back up personal files, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your Windows version. | Windows version, update name or KB number, and any separate update error code. |
| Blue screen or restart loop with 0xC000021A | Protect files if possible; investigate recent startup changes, Safe Mode, System log entries, and system-file integrity. | Whether Windows can start, when the blue screen occurs, and recent driver, service, application, or backup-restoration changes. |
Before troubleshooting, protect files and note what changed
Microsoft Support advises backing up personal files before trying update fixes. If Windows starts, copy important files to a separate location; Microsoft identifies a USB drive as one option. A backup protects your data, but it does not repair the stop error.
Record the Windows release by opening winver, along with the update or KB number if available. Note whether a driver, system service, third-party application, or restored backup was added or changed shortly before the failure. These details help distinguish an update problem from a startup crash.
If Windows starts and only the update fails
- Run the troubleshooter for your version. Follow the Windows 11 or Windows 10 instructions on Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter page. Restart when it finishes, as Microsoft directs.
- Check the actual update failure. Record the update name or KB number and the error shown by Windows Update. Do not substitute 0xC000021A unless that exact value appeared as the update’s error message; it may instead have appeared on a blue screen.
- Retry the update. After the troubleshooter and restart, follow Microsoft’s general update troubleshooting guidance for your Windows version and the error you actually recorded.
If 0xc000021a appears on a blue screen or during startup
Try Safe Mode if Windows will not start normally
Microsoft’s bug-check guidance describes Safe Mode as a way to isolate startup components. If you can reach Safe Mode, consider whether a recently installed or updated driver, system service, or third-party application lines up with the first crash. Microsoft recommends removing or disabling recently changed software to isolate the cause and contacting its manufacturer about an update. Change one suspect at a time where possible so you can tell whether the change affects startup.

Check the System log around the crash
If you can open Windows, review the System log in Event Viewer for critical errors at the time of the blue screen. Look for entries close to the crash rather than treating every warning as its cause. The timing can help identify a related service or driver, but a log entry by itself does not prove what triggered 0xC000021A.
Check Windows system files
Microsoft’s bug-check article also recommends System File Checker (SFC) to scan for and restore corrupted Windows system files. This can address one documented area to investigate, but it is not a guaranteed fix: the stop code can have more than one possible cause.

Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter page states that free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. If the affected PC runs Windows 10, that lifecycle status is separate from diagnosing 0xC000021A; it does not identify the cause of this crash.
