Unplug the vacuum from its charger before inspecting it, and let it cool if it has cut out. A battery fault is only one possible cause of a charging complaint.
If your Dyson V8 has no power or will not charge
Dyson’s V8 troubleshooting includes several possible causes of no power: a battery that needs charging or replacement, a faulty charger, a cyclone that is not fitted correctly, or a fault in the main body. Start with the simple checks rather than assuming the battery has failed.

- Charge the vacuum. Place it on its charging dock or connect the charger at the socket, then try it again.
- Check the cyclone fit. Make sure the cyclone is fully fitted to the machine. An incorrectly fitted cyclone can be part of a no-power problem.
- Consider the charger and battery. If charging and assembly checks do not help, Dyson lists a faulty charger or battery as possible causes. The available troubleshooting information does not identify a charger replacement part number, so do not rely on an unverified charger SKU.
- Contact Dyson if it still has no power. A fault in the main body is another possibility, and basic checks may not distinguish it from a battery or charger fault. See Dyson V8 support for the model’s troubleshooting route.
If the V8 has low suction
Weak pick-up can come from a full bin, dirt or a blockage in the air path, a dirty or incorrectly fitted filter, or an issue with the cleaner head or tool. Check these in sequence so you do not replace a part before clearing a simple obstruction.

Empty the bin and check its inlet
Empty the bin when the debris reaches the MAX line. Check that the bin inlet flap moves freely. Fibres caught around the inlet hinge can hold the flap closed and contribute to low suction or pulsing; remove caught material carefully. Dyson also advises tapping dust from the cyclone and cleaning around its shroud. See its V8 pick-up troubleshooting.

Check the air path and cleaning tool
Disconnect the machine from the charger before checking for blockages. Inspect the wand, cleaner head, tools, bin and cyclone path for trapped debris or dirt. Confirm the filter is correctly fitted, and choose the power mode that suits the task. If suction is poor only with one tool or cleaner head, inspect that attachment as well as the main air path.
Wash the filter and let it dry completely
Remove the applicable V8 filter or filters and rinse them with cold water until the water runs clear. Gently remove excess water, then leave the filters to dry fully before reinstalling. The V8 manual specifies at least 24 hours of drying; a filter that feels dry on the outside may still be damp inside.
- Do not wash filters in a dishwasher or washing machine.
- Do not dry them in a tumble dryer, oven or microwave, or near a naked flame.
- As general care guidance, Dyson recommends washing the filter once a month. Fine dust or frequent use of Powerful mode may mean it needs washing more often.
Follow the Dyson V8 manual for filter handling and maintenance details.

If the V8 pulses or cuts out during use
Motor pulsing can indicate a blockage, and the V8 may cut out automatically. Switch it off, disconnect it from the charger, and let it cool before inspecting it. Then check the bin inlet, wand, cleaner head, tools and filter using the steps above. Do not keep restarting it while it is hot or while an obstruction may remain.
When to consider a replacement part
Consider a replacement only after charging, assembly, bin, blockage and filter checks. Match any part to the exact V8 variant: the part numbers below are listed on Dyson’s V8 Cyclone page and should not be assumed to fit every V8 model. Check current stock and compatibility at the point of purchase.
| Part | Dyson-listed number | Compatibility note |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement battery | 975446-01 | Listed for V8 Cyclone; verify the exact machine variant. |
| Pre-filter | 975286-01 | Listed for V8 Cyclone; verify the exact machine variant. |
Dyson’s V8 Cyclone support and parts page lists these parts. If cleaning and correct assembly do not resolve the symptom, or the machine still will not charge, use Dyson support to determine whether service or a compatible part is appropriate.
