Windows Taskbar Won’t Hide: Checks to Try When Auto-Hide Is On

Check the Windows taskbar auto-hide setting, the bottom-edge reveal gesture, and app alerts when the taskbar stays visible or pops back up.

If the Windows taskbar stays visible after you enable auto-hide, first confirm the setting under the right taskbar behavior section, then move the pointer away from the screen’s bottom edge. If the bar still returns, check for an app with a flashing taskbar button, badge, or notification that needs attention. Those signs can help narrow the problem, but no single cause is confirmed for every case.

Confirm the auto-hide setting and Windows version

In Windows 11, right-click an empty area of the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, and select Automatically hide the taskbar. Microsoft describes the option for desktop and tablet modes. If the labels or layout on your PC differ, check which Windows version you are using and match the steps to that version.

Check whether the taskbar is being revealed normally

A hidden taskbar is designed to appear when you hover over or touch the bottom edge of the screen. Move the pointer away from that edge and give the taskbar a moment to hide. If the pointer remains at the edge, the taskbar may simply be responding to the reveal gesture rather than ignoring the setting.

Look for an app that needs attention

Check the taskbar for a flashing app icon or a badge. Microsoft says these indicators can signal app activity or something that needs your attention. Open the corresponding app and look for a pending alert, notification, or dialog.

A notification from an open app has also been suggested as a reason auto-hide may not take effect in a Microsoft Q&A discussion. That is community troubleshooting advice, not an official diagnosis or a guaranteed explanation. To test it, close open apps one at a time and see whether the taskbar begins hiding. If closing one app changes the behavior, reopen it and address or clear its alert.

Microsoft Q&A: Windows 11 taskbar auto hide issue

Use the symptom to narrow down what to check next

  • The taskbar never hides: Recheck the auto-hide option and move the pointer away from the bottom edge.
  • It hides, then comes back: Note whether the pointer or a touch is reaching the bottom edge, and look for flashing icons, badges, or app alerts.
  • It happens only with one app: Close that app temporarily to see whether the behavior changes. This is a diagnostic check, not proof that the app is responsible.
  • The setting names do not match: Identify whether the PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, since the available instructions and labels may differ.

If these checks do not explain the behavior, useful details to record are the Windows version, whether the taskbar stays visible or reappears, whether the issue occurs only over a particular maximized or full-screen app, whether another display is connected, and whether any taskbar icon is flashing. These details help describe the case; they are not established causes by themselves.

Avoid risky resets as a first step

A community answer on the Q&A page proposes registry and shell-reset actions, but that is not official Microsoft guidance. For a basic auto-hide problem, start with the taskbar setting, reveal gesture, and open-app checks instead of changing the registry or running a reset script.
