Your phone’s location is an estimate, not a reading from GPS alone. Satellite signals, Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth and device sensors may all contribute, depending on the phone and available services. Obstructed signals, an app’s location permissions, a stale last-known position or incorrect map data can make the result look wrong.
First, identify what is actually wrong
Check whether the device marker is misplaced, uncertain or showing an earlier position—or whether the marker is right but a street address or place label is wrong. These symptoms point to different causes.

- Only one app is wrong: Check that app’s location permission and precision setting. If other apps show the right place, an app-specific issue becomes more plausible, though it is not proof.
- The marker drifts or has a large uncertainty circle indoors: The position estimate may be unreliable because satellite signals are obstructed or weak.
- The map shows where you were earlier: The app may not have a current fix and may be showing a last-known position.
- The marker is right but a business or address is not: This is likely a map-data issue, not evidence that the phone’s location hardware is faulty.
- Several apps are substantially wrong outdoors: Check permissions and connectivity, then restart the phone. If the problem persists, seek support from the device maker or qualified diagnostics.
Why a phone can report the wrong place
Location combines several signals
Phones may estimate position using GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular networks, Bluetooth and sensors. Android’s Location Accuracy feature can combine GPS, Wi-Fi, cell towers and sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes; Apple says Location Services can use GPS, Bluetooth, local Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The available inputs differ by device and conditions. Google explains Android Location Accuracy and its inputs, while Apple describes location services on iPhone.

Buildings and indoor spaces can interfere
Satellite signals can be weakened or blocked indoors, in parking garages and among tall buildings. Google notes that a garage or tall buildings between the phone and cell towers can make the blue dot inaccurate. Try checking your position outdoors with a clear view of the sky before assuming the phone has a hardware fault. A network connection may also help the phone use other available location inputs.

The app may have limited precision or no current fix
Device-wide location being on does not necessarily mean every app can use precise location. An app may have no location access, approximate access only, or access that differs from what you expect. Separately, an app unable to determine a current position may display an earlier one.
The map information may be wrong
A correctly placed marker can appear beside an inaccurate address, business listing or route. In that case, correct or report the map information rather than treating the mismatch as a phone-location failure. Apple’s Maps guidance explains how to report an issue or correct place details.

Check the blue dot in Google Maps
In Google Maps, the light-blue circle around the blue dot shows the area where Maps believes you may be. A smaller circle means more certainty; it does not promise a fixed accuracy distance. If the dot is gray or missing, Maps may be unable to determine your current position and may show the last place you visited. Google describes these indicators and possible causes in its blue-dot troubleshooting guide.

- Confirm device location is on. Open Settings and check the Location setting. The exact wording and path vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Review the affected app’s permission. In the app’s location permission settings, confirm it is allowed to access location. On Android 12 and later, check whether the app has precise access if it needs an exact position; this is separate from the device’s Location Accuracy setting.
- Review Location Accuracy. On Android 12 and later, open Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy and review “Improve Location Accuracy.” Menu paths differ on older versions and some devices.
- Check wireless scanning. In Location Services, review Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. These can help apps get better location information when the signals are available.
- Test outdoors. If the position is wrong indoors or beside large buildings, check again with a clear view of the sky and an active connection.
Google notes that not all devices have wireless signals, GPS or sensor data available. For its current explanations of scanning, app permissions and Location Accuracy, see Android Help.

Check location settings on iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and confirm Location Services is on.
- Select the affected app and review its location access. Turn on Precise Location if that app needs an exact position; approximate access may be suitable for apps that do not.
- If the problem is in Apple Maps, check that the date, time and time zone are correct, and that mobile data or Wi-Fi is active.
- Close and reopen Maps. If it still shows the wrong location, restart the iPhone.
Apple’s iPhone location-sharing guide covers location controls. Its Maps troubleshooting page, published May 21, 2026, also describes connectivity, restarting and map-data reporting.

If multiple apps continue to show a substantially wrong position outdoors after you have checked app permissions, connectivity and restarted the phone, contact the device maker or seek qualified diagnostics. A single location error does not establish that the GPS antenna or other hardware has failed; the official guidance cited here does not provide a definitive end-user hardware test.
