Recommended Free Tools
Use Storage Sense to automate routine cleanup; use Disk Cleanup when you want to review file categories and choose what to remove right now. Both are built into Windows, and they serve complementary purposes rather than offering one universal winner.
How the two Windows cleanup tools differ
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent routine storage buildup with little manual effort | Storage Sense | You can set its schedule and deletion preferences so eligible cleanup runs automatically. |
| Free space now while checking what will be removed | Disk Cleanup | You choose a drive and file categories, with additional system-file choices available. |
| Keep Downloads or cloud files untouched | Review Storage Sense settings before enabling cleanup | Those locations are not managed unless you opt in through settings. |
| Keep personal files but remove them from the PC | Move selected files to external storage | Microsoft lists USB drives and SD cards as options; an external drive must be connected to access its files. |
| Preserve the ability to roll back a recent Windows upgrade | Keep the previous Windows installation | Removing it deletes the rollback option and cannot be undone. |
What Storage Sense does automatically
Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually C:. Microsoft says its default settings run when the device is low on disk space and remove unnecessary temporary files. You can also choose a frequency and set preferences for eligible files. It only runs when you are signed in and online for more than 10 minutes. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud files
Storage Sense can delete Recycle Bin contents after the age you configure. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you opt in through settings, so check those preferences if you want those files to remain untouched.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For OneDrive online-only files, Microsoft says the default in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later is 30 days without opening. An online-only file is not permanently deleted by this setting, and files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt. Verify the current settings on your PC before relying on them.

What Disk Cleanup lets you choose
Disk Cleanup is a manual review: select a drive, inspect the listed file categories, and choose what to remove. Microsoft’s instructions say Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Thumbnails are selected by default; clear a category’s checkbox if you do not want it deleted. Selecting Clean up system files calculates additional system-file categories. Review the selections before confirming deletion. See Microsoft’s instructions for freeing up space in Windows.
Be cautious with Previous Windows Installation(s)
The Previous Windows Installation(s) category can include Windows.old. Deleting it removes the option to return to the previous Windows version, and Microsoft says the action cannot be undone. Leave it in place if you might need that rollback.

How to choose and run the right cleanup
Set up Storage Sense for recurring maintenance
- Open Settings and go to System > Storage. Menu labels can vary between Windows releases.
- Open Storage Sense, turn it on if desired, and choose when it should run.
- Review the options for Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud content. Only make Downloads or cloud files eligible if you are comfortable with the configured deletion rules.
- Allow the device to be signed in and online long enough for a scheduled run. Microsoft says Storage Sense cannot run unless those conditions hold for more than 10 minutes.
Use Disk Cleanup for a deliberate pass
- Search for Disk Cleanup from the taskbar and open it.
- Select the drive to clean, usually C:, and wait for the calculation to finish.
- Inspect the file categories and clear any selections you want to keep.
- Choose Clean up system files if you need to review additional system-file categories. Recheck the selections, especially Previous Windows Installation(s), before confirming.
If cleanup does not free enough space
There is no guaranteed amount either tool will recover; it depends on which eligible files are present and what you choose to remove. If space is still tight, or you want to keep large personal files without storing them on the PC, Microsoft recommends moving selected files to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card.
Windows updates also need room for downloads, installation, and temporary support for removing an update. Microsoft gives typical free-space ranges of 6 GB–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2 GB–3 GB or more for quality updates; actual needs vary with the update path and optional content installed. These are not universal minimums. See Microsoft’s Windows update space guidance.
