How Android Auto Works—and What Data It May Use

Android Auto projects a phone-powered, driving-focused interface to a compatible car display. Learn how wired and wireless connections differ and what permissions may be involved.

Android Auto runs on your Android phone and projects a driving-focused interface to a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo. The car screen is the display; it does not mean Android Auto is running on the car itself. Depending on the apps, permissions, services and settings involved, the connection may use location, contacts, SMS, microphone, phone-state and nearby-device permissions. That list describes possible uses—not proof that every item is accessed or sent on every trip.

How Android Auto works

Your phone provides the Android Auto experience, while compatible apps present driving-optimized interfaces on the vehicle display. Supported categories include media, messaging and templated apps. On supported devices running Android 15 or later, some parked apps are available; Android Auto exits those apps automatically when it detects vehicle motion. Android Open Source Project and Android Developers describe the distinction and supported app experience.

What you need to connect

Both the phone and the car or aftermarket stereo must support Android Auto. Google’s current guidance lists Android 9 or later for most wired connections and Android 11 or later for wireless connections and selected newer vehicles; exact compatibility depends on the devices, model and region. Check Google’s requirements and getting-started guidance for your particular setup.

Connection How it works What to check
Wired Connect the phone to the compatible display over USB. Google lists a high-quality USB cable as a requirement. Match the cable connector and length to your phone and vehicle.
Wireless Pair through Bluetooth; supported systems then connect wirelessly. Wireless Android Auto has different compatibility requirements. Verify that both the phone and vehicle or stereo support it.

A cable is only relevant if you choose a wired setup; it is not a requirement for a supported wireless connection.

Android Auto versus Android Automotive

These names refer to different arrangements. Android Auto runs on the phone and projects its supported interface to a car display. Android Automotive OS runs directly on vehicle hardware. In an Android Automotive vehicle, the car maker may provide vehicle-specific settings and controls that do not apply to Android Auto projection. See the Android Open Source Project’s explanation for the platform distinction.

What data and permissions may be involved

Google Play services’ device-connection permission guidance gives Android Auto as an example of functionality that may involve the following permissions. A permission makes an action possible when granted; it does not establish that every permission is used in every session, or that the associated information is uploaded to Google or the automaker.

The cited guidance does not establish that every listed item is accessed or transmitted on every drive, or how long any item is retained.

Location data: general Google policy context

Google’s general privacy policy says location information can include GPS and other device-sensor data, IP address, activity on Google services, and information about nearby Wi-Fi access points, cell towers and Bluetooth-enabled devices. It also says the types of location data collected and their retention depend partly on the product and account settings. This is general Google privacy-policy context, not a complete Android Auto-specific inventory of data flows or retention. Read Google’s Privacy Policy.

How to review privacy settings

  1. On your Android phone, open the Android permission controls and review location and other sensitive permissions for Google apps and third-party apps you use in the car. The exact menus can vary by Android version and device maker.
  2. Check the apps’ Google Play Data safety disclosures for app-specific information. Google’s Android privacy settings and permissions page points users to these controls and disclosures.
  3. Consider the effect before denying access: an app feature that depends on a permission may stop working. Change permissions in the phone’s Android controls or the relevant app settings rather than assuming the car screen offers a universal Android Auto privacy dashboard.
  4. Review vehicle-maker connected services separately. A manufacturer may provide its own apps, telematics, privacy choices and policies; the Android Auto permission guidance does not establish every automaker’s practices.

Do not assume every car has the same dashboard

Android Automotive OS release documentation describes an in-car privacy dashboard that can show recent permission use for sensors such as location, microphone and camera. That documentation concerns the Android Automotive environment it describes; it is not evidence that every Android Auto installation has the same dashboard. See Android Automotive 13 release details.
