The best choice depends less on the biggest advertised coverage number than on where nodes can go, whether they can use wired backhaul, the home’s construction and the devices that will connect. If one router already covers your home, a mesh kit may add cost and setup without enough benefit.
What mesh Wi-Fi does—and when it helps
A mesh system pairs a main router with additional nodes that extend the same network around the home. It can help reach rooms or floors where a single router’s signal is weak, especially in larger or multistory layouts. A smaller home with reliable coverage may not need extra nodes. TechRadar’s mesh overview describes this general use; the decision for an individual home still depends on its layout and signal conditions.

How to choose a system for your home
- Map the problem areas. Note which rooms and floors have weak or unreliable service, and where you use devices. If coverage is already adequate, first consider whether additional hardware would solve a real problem.
- Check for Ethernet at possible node locations. A wired Ethernet backhaul connects nodes through cable rather than relying on a wireless link between them. ASUS says, “A wired Ethernet connection will ensure the best performance but requires more work, as you might need to connect Ethernet cables to every node.” See ASUS’s mesh Wi-Fi guidance. If cabling is impractical, check how the system handles wireless backhaul and follow its placement guidance.
- Match the system to the building. Consider wall and floor materials, the distance between nodes, likely interference and whether nodes can be placed in useful positions. Node count or a square-footage claim alone cannot determine the result: ASUS notes that adding nodes does not always improve performance, and TP-Link’s stated results are tied to particular test conditions.
- Match Wi-Fi and ports to your devices and internet service. Check the radio bands, Ethernet port speeds and client compatibility you need. A faster port helps only if the broadband service and the rest of the wired connection can use that speed. Newer Wi-Fi features also require compatible client devices.
- Compare the exact kit, not just the model name. Verify the number of nodes in the pack, regional hardware and port configuration, current price and availability, and support terms before buying. Those details can vary by country and bundle.
Why coverage figures and node counts need context
Coverage claims from different manufacturers are not automatically comparable. For example, TP-Link Canada describes a test in a 4,600-square-foot, two-story, five-bedroom villa with drywall and 4×4 MLO-compatible clients. The company says performance varies with network conditions, access type, interference, obstacles, walls, location and client devices. That figure describes the test setting, not a universal coverage guarantee. See TP-Link Canada’s Deco BE85 page.

Likewise, eero lists coverage of up to 2,000 square feet per eero Pro 6E device. This is a manufacturer claim, not a directly comparable measurement against TP-Link’s villa test. eero’s comparison page also lists tri-band radios and two Ethernet ports for the Pro 6E: eero’s mesh product comparison.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Independent test results are useful context, but they are not promises for another home. Tom’s Guide reports Deco BE85 throughput of 1.736 Gbps at 15 feet, 790.4 Mbps at 50 feet, 179.2 Mbps at 75 feet and 42.6 Mbps at 90 feet in its multistory-home test with brick walls. Those measurements apply to that test setup; a different building, client, placement or backhaul can produce different results. Tom’s Guide’s test coverage provides the published figures and context.
A premium Wi-Fi 7 example: TP-Link Deco BE85
The Deco BE85 is one example to consider if you want a premium Wi-Fi 7 mesh kit and have compatible devices. TP-Link’s UK product page describes a tri-band system, two 10 Gbps WAN/LAN ports—one RJ45 and one RJ45/SFP+ combo—and optional Ethernet backhaul. TP-Link also says compatible Wi-Fi 7 clients are needed for MLO and 6 GHz benefits. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of a particular home’s speed or coverage. Check the exact regional model and pack before purchase, since hardware and bundle details may differ. TP-Link’s UK Deco BE85 listing.

Wi-Fi 7’s combined theoretical link rate should not be read as the speed one device will receive or an internet connection will deliver. Real performance depends on the client, broadband plan, node placement, building and backhaul; the system’s high-speed ports are useful only when the rest of the connection path can take advantage of them.

With wireless backhaul, nodes communicate over Wi-Fi; with wired backhaul, Ethernet carries the node-to-node connection. Wired backhaul can strengthen the connection between nodes, but requires cable runs to their locations. ASUS’s support guidance says its systems typically support a router and up to nine nodes for optimal wireless-backhaul performance; that is family-level guidance, not a recommendation verified for every ZenWiFi model or home. ASUS also cautions that adding nodes does not always improve performance. Read ASUS’s explanation of backhaul and node guidance.

Use a shortlist that fits your layout
There is no defensible single ranking across the full market from the available comparable evidence. Instead, compare candidate kits against the same requirements:
- How many nodes are included, and which rooms or floors need coverage?
- Can the nodes use Ethernet backhaul, and is cabling available or worth installing?
- Which bands and Wi-Fi generation are supported, and do your devices support the features you want?
- What Ethernet port speeds and WAN/LAN options does the exact regional kit provide?
- What are the current price, pack contents, availability and support terms in your country?
For a three-story townhouse, for example, begin by identifying which floors and rooms actually lose signal, then look for node positions with a viable connection back to the main router. A reader’s question about a “3 story townhome” illustrates how often buyers frame the problem by floors and home type, but it is one discussion rather than representative survey evidence: the Reddit question.
