If Windows won’t sleep, first check the sleep timer—not just whether the screen goes dark. A display timeout, a laptop lid action, and a wake problem are separate settings and symptoms. Use the checks below to identify which one you’re seeing; the right wake method and available options can vary by PC.
First, identify what is not working
- The screen turns off, but the PC stays active: check the separate screen and sleep timers.
- The PC does not sleep when you close the lid or press the power button: check those actions in Power Options.
- The PC appears to sleep but will not resume: try the wake methods supported by your computer.
- The PC wakes but the display stays blank: use the graphics reset shortcut only for that blank-display symptom.
These symptoms do not establish a particular cause on their own. The exact cause depends on the PC, Windows version, settings, and device drivers.

Check the screen and sleep timers
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Check both Turn my screen off after and Make my device sleep after. Review the battery and plugged-in choices separately where shown. A screen timeout can turn the display off without putting the PC to sleep. Microsoft describes these controls in its Windows 11 power and sleep settings guidance.
In Windows 10, the documented Settings path is Settings > System > Power & sleep. Labels can vary by release; search Settings for “Power & sleep” or open the classic Power Options control panel if needed. Microsoft documents the Windows 10 path in its shutdown, sleep, and hibernate instructions.

Set what the lid and power button do
These actions are independent of the idle sleep timer. If closing the lid or pressing the power button does not have the expected effect, check its assigned action.
Windows 11
- Search Windows for Control Panel and open it.
- Go to System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
- Set When I close the lid or When I press the power button to Sleep for the relevant battery and plugged-in states.
- Select Save changes.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Select Additional power settings.
- Choose the lid or power-button action, set the relevant state to Sleep, and save the change.
If Sleep is missing or unavailable, that is not enough to identify a universal fault. Available options can depend on the computer’s design and manufacturer implementation. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for device-specific choices. The steps above follow Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 11 and Windows 10; additional Power Options behavior is covered in its Power Options guidance.

If the PC sleeps but will not wake
Try the computer’s power button first. Depending on the PC, it may also wake from a keyboard, mouse, or opening the laptop lid; these methods are not supported identically on every computer. If one does not work, consult the computer maker’s documentation or support site rather than assuming Windows has a universal wake method.
If a device stops working after resume
For a keyboard, mouse, or other attached device that malfunctions after the PC resumes, disconnect and reconnect it or restart the computer. Check that the device drivers are current. These are Microsoft’s recommended steps for post-resume device problems in its sleep and wake guidance.

If the PC wakes but the display remains blank
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. This shortcut is a display troubleshooting step for a blank screen; it does not diagnose every failure to sleep or wake. See Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance.
Check optional and managed settings
Some Windows 11 PCs offer presence sensing: depending on the hardware and configuration, the screen may turn off when you leave or the device may wake when you approach. Look under Settings > System > Power & battery. The controls may be absent because the manufacturer has not enabled the required capability or because an organization manages the device; their absence alone does not show that Windows is faulty. Microsoft explains availability in its presence-sensing guidance.

Microsoft summarizes sleep this way: “Sleep uses very little power, your PC starts up faster, and you’re instantly back to where you left off.” The actual available sleep and wake behavior still depends on the computer.
