Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If shutdown /s appears to work but Start > Power > Shut down returns to a Welcome or sign-in screen, first determine whether the PC actually powered off. Returning to sign-in while the computer stays on is different from shutting down and then seeing the sign-in screen after the next boot. The symptom alone does not identify a cause such as Fast Startup.
First establish what “Welcome Screen” means
Watch what happens immediately after you choose Start > Power > Shut down, Microsoft’s standard Windows 10 and Windows 11 route (Microsoft’s shut down, sleep, and hibernate guidance).

- The PC remains on and returns to sign-in: note whether the display changes immediately, whether the power light and fans remain on, and whether you can sign back in without a new boot. This is not the same observation as a completed shutdown.
- The PC powers off, then shows sign-in after you turn it back on: the sign-in screen is part of the next startup. By itself, it does not show that the earlier shutdown failed.
- The screen is not Windows sign-in: identify whether it is a firmware or pre-login screen, and note any message or error. That calls for a different diagnosis.
Record the Windows version and build, device make and model, whether work or school manages the PC, the exact menu route, and whether apps were open. Also write down the exact command you tested, including any switches. Those observations help distinguish a sign-out, a shutdown that did not finish, and a normal sign-in after startup.
What the command and menu actions mean
Microsoft defines shutdown /s as shutting down the computer and shutdown /l as signing out the current user. The command reference also defines /hybrid as shutting down and preparing the device for Fast Startup; it must be used with /s. These definitions make the command useful as a comparison, but they do not prove that the PC completed a physical power-off in a particular test. See Microsoft’s shutdown command reference.

Compare what you observed for each action rather than assuming the menu and command performed the same operation. Note whether the PC stayed at sign-in, powered off, restarted, or displayed an error. If the command you used included /hybrid or other switches, record that too; shutdown /s and shutdown /s /hybrid are not identical instructions.
Fast Startup is relevant context, not a diagnosis. Microsoft explains that it logs off user sessions and writes the kernel session to disk, so a device using it can appear fully shut down while retaining a hibernation state. That behavior does not establish why the Start-menu action in this case returns to sign-in. See Microsoft’s Fast Startup overview.

Use reversible checks before changing advanced settings
- Save open work and close applications normally. Try the Start-menu shutdown again and observe whether the same screen appears and whether the PC remains powered on.
- Restart Windows, then test shutdown again. Record whether the result changes. Keep the command comparison consistent: note the exact switches rather than treating every shutdown command as equivalent.
- Check for a repeated restart or an error. If the PC restarts instead of staying off, shows a stop code, or enters recovery, stop treating the Welcome screen as the only clue and use Microsoft’s recovery or stop-code guidance (below).
- If the issue persists, isolate software or driver conflicts. Use the Safe Mode procedure or clean-boot procedure below, changing only what those instructions call for. Note the result, and reverse clean-boot changes when finished.
Do not make /f the first workaround. Microsoft says it forces running applications to close without warning, which can discard unsaved data. The command reference describes the switch at Microsoft’s shutdown command reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck whether the issue persists in Safe Mode or a clean boot
Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. If the same behavior continues there, that is useful isolation evidence; if it changes, a driver or service loaded during a normal start may be involved. Safe Mode narrows possibilities but does not, by itself, identify a specific cause or fix. Follow Microsoft’s Safe Mode instructions.

Clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs to help identify conflicts from background software. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure and restore the normal startup configuration afterward. Microsoft cautions that changing advanced settings can make a computer unusable or temporarily remove functionality, so use the documented steps carefully.

A single return to sign-in is not the same as a boot failure. If Windows repeatedly restarts, displays a stop code, or enters recovery, follow the relevant Microsoft guidance instead of assuming the Welcome screen explains the problem:

- Microsoft’s blue-screen and stop-code troubleshooting is relevant when Windows displays a stop code.
A Microsoft page describing a Welcome to Windows dialog after a shutdown timer concerns a specific legacy locked-computer and screen-saver situation. It labels that behavior “by design,” but it does not establish an explanation for this Windows 10 or Windows 11 symptom: Microsoft’s legacy scenario.
