Windows Server 2025 error 0x800f0982 means servicing could not identify a matching component for hydration. Microsoft maps the code to PSFX_E_MATCHING_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND, but that definition does not establish that Defender is responsible or that every cumulative update is failing for the same reason. Check the affected server’s servicing logs, then try Microsoft’s general DISM and System File Checker repair steps.
What error 0x800f0982 tells you
Microsoft describes 0x800f0982 as “Can’t identify matching component for hydration.” In practical terms, Windows servicing could not match a component it needed during the update operation. The code is a useful clue, not a complete diagnosis: Microsoft’s general error description does not identify Defender as the cause. Microsoft’s Windows Server update troubleshooting guidance and its documentation on Windows Update errors requiring an in-place upgrade do not confirm that “orphaned Defender components” explain every occurrence.

Likewise, verify “all cumulative updates fail” against the machine’s update history and deployment records. A single failed KB, a series of failures, and a deployment-policy or applicability issue call for different follow-up. Do not remove Defender packages or change servicing registry entries based only on this error code.

Before changing the server, record the information that ties the error to a particular update and servicing transaction:
#1 Best Overall
- Windows Server edition and OS build.
- The latest successfully installed KB and the exact KB number or numbers that fail.
- Whether updates arrive through Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, WSUS, the Microsoft Update Catalog, or another management process.
- When failure occurs, whether a restart is requested, and what happens after restarting.
- Any package or component identity named in the servicing logs.
Review the Setup event log and the Component-Based Servicing log around the failed attempt. The CBS log is at %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Use the time of the failure to find the relevant transaction and note its package or component identity; that evidence is more useful for choosing a targeted next step than the error string alone.
Run Microsoft’s general component-repair steps
Microsoft’s Windows Server guidance recommends running DISM first, then System File Checker, from an elevated command prompt. Run each command to completion:
Rank #2
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. - After DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. - Review the command results and retry the affected Windows Update operation.
These are general Windows corruption-repair steps, not a guaranteed fix for every 0x800f0982 failure. Microsoft notes that DISM can take several minutes and that servicing details are written to CBS.log. If DISM reports an error or the update still fails, preserve the output and inspect the log for the specific failure and component involved.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a repair source that matches the server
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If the server cannot reach that source, Microsoft documents providing files from a working Windows installation or from network, USB, or DVD media. The repair-source computer must run the same operating-system version as the affected server. Do not assume an arbitrary ISO or a different Server build is interchangeable.
Rank #3
| Repair source | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update online | The server can reach Microsoft’s update service. | Connectivity and whether DISM completes successfully. |
| Working installation or network, USB, or DVD files | The server cannot obtain repair files online, or an alternate source is needed. | The source installation runs the same operating-system version as the affected server, and DISM accepts the source. |
Follow Microsoft’s repair-source instructions for the selected source and investigate any DISM error rather than repeatedly retrying with unverified media.

For each failure, confirm that the KB applies to the installed Server 2025 build and check whether it has been superseded. Also confirm that the server’s configured update channel and policy are delivering the intended package. Microsoft’s Server 2025 release notes for KB5060842 (June 10, 2025) and KB5063878 (August 12, 2025) describe update-channel availability and combined servicing stack and cumulative update packages for those specific releases. Those historical examples do not identify the package currently failing on another server; check the current Microsoft release information for the exact KB before applying package-specific instructions.
Escalate using the servicing evidence
If DISM cannot repair the component store, or CBS.log points to a missing package or component that the general repair does not restore, keep the logs and escalate with the OS build, failed KB, command output, and relevant CBS and Setup entries. Use a supported recovery path for the identified component and update, or seek Microsoft support. Do not force-remove a package, delete Defender components, or edit component-servicing registry keys without a diagnosis and a supported procedure for that exact case.
