Which tool fits your test?
| Your testing need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Try a Windows installer or app in a clean environment, then discard it | Windows Sandbox | It opens a temporary Windows desktop and removes its state when closed. It uses the host’s Windows build and supports one running instance at a time. Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox documentation and FAQ describe these behaviors. |
| Keep a configured VM, test changes over multiple sessions, or return to a saved point | Hyper-V | Hyper-V VMs persist, and checkpoints let you return to an earlier state. Check Windows edition and hardware eligibility before setting it up. Microsoft’s checkpoint guidance explains the checkpoint types and limitations. |
| Run guest operating systems on a cross-platform VM manager | VirtualBox | Oracle describes VirtualBox as a cross-platform application for running multiple operating systems in virtual machines, with snapshots for returning to a saved state. Check the current manual for the specific host and guest combination you need. Oracle VirtualBox documentation. |
What changes when you close or reset the environment?
Windows Sandbox is disposable
Sandbox gives you a clean Windows environment for a short test. Changes made during the session are discarded when you close it; restarting Windows inside the sandbox does not itself end the session. That makes it convenient for repeatable one-off trials, but unsuitable for a VM you want to configure once and retain.

Hyper-V keeps VMs and offers checkpoints
A Hyper-V virtual machine remains available across sessions unless you revert or remove it. A checkpoint can take you back to an earlier VM state, which is useful for testing successive changes against a known starting point. Microsoft’s checkpoint documentation distinguishes standard checkpoints, which include memory state, from production checkpoints, which use VSS or a Linux file-system freeze for data consistency. A standard checkpoint is not a full backup.
VirtualBox provides a snapshot-based workflow
VirtualBox snapshots let you preserve a VM state and revert to it later. Like Hyper-V checkpoints, they are a way to manage test states, not a replacement for an independent backup. The available hosts, guests, and features depend on the release and architecture; consult the VirtualBox manual for your exact combination.

Can you test another Windows version or operating system?
Windows Sandbox uses the same Windows build as its host. It is therefore not the right choice for checking compatibility with an older Windows release or a different guest OS. Microsoft’s Sandbox FAQ also says only one instance can run at a time.
Hyper-V supports virtual machines, but the host and guest operating systems must meet Microsoft’s current support requirements. VirtualBox is documented as cross-platform and supports multiple guest operating systems, but that does not mean every guest works on every host. Verify support in the relevant Microsoft Hyper-V guest support list or the VirtualBox manual before planning a test.

What do you need to run them?
Windows Sandbox
Microsoft lists Windows Pro, Enterprise, Pro Education/SE, and Education as editions that support Windows Sandbox. It is positioned as a simple, lightweight way to start a temporary environment, but that is a qualitative description, not a measured performance comparison against Hyper-V or VirtualBox. See Microsoft’s requirements and setup guidance.
Hyper-V on Windows client
For enabling Hyper-V on a Windows client, Microsoft lists Windows 10/11 Pro or Enterprise, a 64-bit CPU with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), VM Monitor Mode extensions, virtualization enabled in BIOS/UEFI, and adequate memory. Microsoft advises planning for at least 4 GB of RAM; the host and its VMs need enough memory for their actual workloads. Run Systeminfo.exe and check the Hyper-V requirements section, then consult the current Hyper-V requirements.

VirtualBox
VirtualBox 7.2 is described by Oracle as cross-platform. Host and guest compatibility is version-specific, so confirm the current release’s support details in the official manual rather than assuming a particular operating system or architecture will work.
How should you handle suspicious software?
A disposable environment can reduce the risk of leaving unwanted changes on your normal desktop, but it does not make risky software harmless. Windows Sandbox networking is enabled by default, and clipboard sharing is enabled by default as well. Microsoft cautions that network access can expose untrusted apps to the internal network and that mapped folders can expose host files. For an offline inspection, disable networking where possible and map only the specific folder needed, with read-only access where practical. Avoid broad writable host-folder mappings. Microsoft’s Sandbox configuration guidance describes controls for networking and mapped folders.

Is one faster or safer than the others?
The official documentation does not establish a controlled three-way benchmark for launch time, performance, or memory use. Microsoft’s descriptions of Sandbox as quick to start or having a lower memory footprint are qualitative product statements, not comparative test results. Choose based on persistence, operating-system support, setup requirements, and how much host access the test needs; do not infer a universal speed or security ranking from those descriptions.
