Keep children’s craft supplies manageable in a small space by grouping them by activity, giving each group a simple home, and keeping only child-approved everyday materials within reach. Use storage that fits an existing shelf, closet, cabinet, or under-bed space before adding furniture. Secure hazardous or adult-supervised supplies out of reach, and anchor tall furniture.
Start by choosing what stays in the everyday craft area
Take everything out and remove dried-out, broken, duplicate, and no-longer-used materials. Set aside occasional project supplies rather than letting them crowd the items children use regularly. A smaller active selection is easier to see, retrieve, and put away.

Sort what remains by how it is used, not by the size of the containers. Drawing supplies, painting materials, paper, and small embellishments are useful broad groups. Keep the number of groups modest so the system is easy for a child to understand and maintain. IKEA’s children’s-room storage guide likewise recommends organizing by category.

Pick storage that fits the room and the supplies
Use existing storage first: a shelf, closet, or low cabinet may be enough. Before buying or repurposing containers, measure the space they must fit—including shelf depth and under-bed clearance—and consider whether the child can reach and return them safely.

New Zealand Ministry of Education home-based early-learning guidance names baskets and stackable boxes as storage options, including for art supplies, and cautions against high stacks and overfilled cupboards. Its PF206 storage guidance concerns early-learning services; the container ideas can be adapted to a home, but the page is not a product recommendation. IKEA’s guide also discusses modular and vertical storage and under-bed space.
Make cleanup simple enough to stick
- Assign each group a home. Keep related supplies together rather than splitting them across several containers.
- Label the homes. Use short words or picture labels so children can identify where materials belong, including before they can read.
- Keep everyday materials accessible. Put only supplies approved for independent use on reachable shelves. Early-learning guidance from New Zealand’s Ministry of Education describes open shelves as a way for children to choose materials, while cupboards and drawers can hold items rotated into use. - Put occasional materials elsewhere. Store them in a higher cupboard or another designated spot, then bring them out when needed.
- Reset after projects. Return supplies to their labeled homes and remove scraps or materials that are no longer usable.
Keep craft supplies and furniture safe
Read each art material’s label and supervise children during use. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org advises avoiding materials marked “Keep Out of Reach of Children” or “Not for Use by Children,” as well as products with hazard wording such as “Poison,” “Danger,” “Warning,” or “Caution.” It notes that an ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal is a better choice than a Cautionary Label, but does not guarantee complete safety. Follow local product labels and guidance as well as the AAP’s guidance on choosing art and craft supplies.

- Keep hazardous, sharp, or adult-supervised materials secured and inaccessible to children.
- Store supplies in their labeled containers when possible; do not transfer them to an unlabeled container that removes their identity or hazard information.
- Put heavier materials low rather than in high shelves or drawers.
- If you use tall furniture, anchor it as directed by its maker and use a wall fastener suited to both the wall and the unit. Health Canada’s tip-over guidance, dated 2025-01-24, advises anchoring furniture, keeping heavier items in lower drawers, and supervising children around furniture.
- Avoid high stacks and overfilled cupboards that can make items fall or be difficult to reach.

- Footprint: Does it use a shelf, closet, door, or under-bed space you already have, or does it add floor clutter?
- Reach: Can the child reach appropriate everyday supplies and put them back without pulling down a heavy container?
- Visibility: Can the child identify the category quickly from the container, label, or picture?
- Flexibility: Can bins or shelves be rearranged as projects and interests change?
