To change a photo’s background in Windows Photos, open the image, select Edit image, then Background. Photos selects the background automatically; refine the selection with its brush tools, choose Blur, Remove, or Replace, and apply the edit. Replace fills the background with a solid color you choose, including a color entered as RGB values—it does not add another photo in this panel.
How to change a photo background in Windows Photos

Open the picture in Microsoft Photos and select Edit image. Microsoft lists Ctrl+E as the edit shortcut. If you do not see the option, check that you have opened a single image in the Photos app rather than browsing a folder or using Photos Legacy. Microsoft distinguishes the newer Photos app from Photos Legacy, but its background-editing instructions do not specify a minimum app version or Windows build. Microsoft’s photo-editing instructions and its Photos app overview describe the apps and controls.

If the selection needs correction, turn on the background brush. Use Add mask to include missed background areas, or Remove mask to exclude parts of the subject that Photos mistakenly selected. Adjust brush size or softness to suit the edge and area you are correcting.

Choose an outcome, make any available adjustment, then select Apply. The results differ:
- Blur keeps the background but softens it; adjust the blur intensity before applying.
- Remove removes the selected background, leaving it transparent.
- Replace fills the background with a selected color. Choose a palette color or enter RGB values for a precise solid color, then apply.
Microsoft says the AI background separation in this Photos panel runs locally on your device; the data for that separation process does not leave the device. That is distinct from the optional online editing experience described below.

Choose blur, removal, or a color replacement

The documented Replace control changes the background to a color; Microsoft does not describe an option in this panel to place a second photograph behind the subject. For a photo or video backdrop, use a different workflow, such as Microsoft’s Clipchamp instructions for removing an image background and placing another image or video beneath it on a timeline.

Fix selection errors

Part of the subject disappears: Photos may have included that area in the background selection. Use Remove mask over the subject to exclude it.

Original background remains in a patch: Paint over the missed area with Add mask to include it in the selection.

An edge looks rough: Adjust brush size or softness and refine the mask in smaller areas before applying.

Automatic selection and masking provide ways to correct the cutout, but Microsoft does not promise perfect results for every image. Hair, fine detail, and low contrast can make edges harder to separate, so inspect the selection before applying it.

Microsoft’s optional Edit with Designer experience is an online editing route in Photos, separate from the local Background panel workflow. Microsoft documents background removal and blur in Designer. It requires an internet connection and a supported language; its AI features require signing in with a Microsoft account, and Microsoft Entra accounts cannot be used for this editing sign-in. If Designer is unavailable, confirm that you opened one image, are online, and are using a supported language. See Microsoft’s Designer editing instructions.

Photo backgrounds are not desktop wallpaper
Editing the background inside a photo changes that image; it does not change the Windows desktop wallpaper. Wallpaper is controlled separately through Windows personalization settings. Microsoft also documents setting a viewed image as desktop background from the Photos menu, but that action uses the image as wallpaper rather than editing its contents. Microsoft’s desktop-background instructions cover that separate setting.
