Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Either a Windows PC or a VPS can run prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream, but neither guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. A PC gives you direct control over the encoder and local files; a VPS moves the workload to a hosted machine and avoids leaving a physical streaming computer at home. In both cases you must provide a compatible encoder, stable outbound bandwidth, accessible media, monitoring and a plan for recovering from failures. If you want the stream to run without managing a PC or server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key and go live.
How to choose between a Windows PC and a VPS
Choose a Windows PC if you already have suitable hardware, reliable upload service and are willing to keep the computer, network and encoder running. Choose a VPS if you prefer a hosted environment and can configure and monitor a server, after checking its sustained network capacity and full recurring cost. A VPS is not automatically more reliable, and a PC is not automatically cheaper; the actual result depends on your setup.

| Consideration | Windows PC at home or work | VPS or cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Control and media | You control the installed software and can use files stored locally. You maintain the physical computer. | The provider supplies virtual compute. You configure the OS, encoder, media access and recovery. |
| Network | Your upload must sustain the stream bitrate, with headroom, through the whole broadcast. | Capacity and transfer terms depend on the provider and selected instance. Check sustained bandwidth, not just an “up to” figure. |
| Costs | Hardware, electricity, broadband and maintenance depend on your circumstances; there is no universal local cost. | Compute runtime, storage and outbound data may all contribute to the bill. Region, operating system, instance and usage matter. |
| Failure response | Power, home internet, operating-system changes or hardware problems can interrupt the stream; you can access the machine directly. | Hosted infrastructure does not prevent guest-OS, application, media or configuration failures. You still need monitoring and recovery. |
| Often a better fit when | You own suitable hardware and can keep it powered, connected and maintained. | You want a hosted machine and are comfortable managing it and estimating its complete bill. |
There is no established comparative uptime figure for these two approaches. The choice is about who maintains the machine and network, and how you handle failures—not a guaranteed service level.
What a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream requires
YouTube accepts encoder-based live streams. An encoder converts video into a stream-compatible format; OBS Studio is one software option, and OBS lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported. That compatibility alone does not show whether a particular PC or VM can handle your chosen resolution, frame rate and encoding workload. OBS notes that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording with OBS (OBS system requirements).

- Channel eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours (YouTube’s getting-started guidance).
- Encoder and stream settings: The computer or VM must sustain the selected encode and send it to YouTube.
- Source availability: The files and playlist must remain accessible to the encoder throughout playback.
- Network capacity: The outbound connection must sustain the total stream bitrate, plus headroom.
- Operations: Someone or something must detect a stopped process, failed connection or unavailable file and respond.
YouTube lists RTMPS and H.264, H.265 and AV1 ingestion options, recommends constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not proof that your machine or connection can sustain them. Test with similar audio and motion, then monitor stream health (YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance).
Estimate bandwidth and data before selecting a host
YouTube advises that total bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. For example, a 5 Mbps video stream needs more than 5 Mbps of dependable upload capacity once audio and operating margin are included; the measured connection must remain stable, not merely reach that speed in a brief test. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream (YouTube network guidance).

For a rough data-transfer plan, a constant video bitrate of B Mbps uses approximately B × 0.45 GB per hour before protocol overhead. This is a unit-conversion estimate, not a provider quote. Add audio, protocol overhead and operating margin, then check how your internet provider or VPS provider bills transfer.
- Test the connection from the location or server that will actually stream.
- For a home PC, account for other household or office upload use and power interruptions.
- For a VPS, verify the selected instance’s sustained bandwidth and data-transfer allowance. AWS says bandwidth depends on instance type; some instances have a baseline and use network I/O credits to burst above it for limited periods (AWS EC2 network bandwidth).
Set up the Windows PC option
- Prepare the channel: In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live. Complete channel verification and live-stream activation if prompted; initial activation may take up to 24 hours. Confirm there is no live-streaming restriction.
- Install and configure an encoder: Install OBS Studio on supported Windows 10 or Windows 11. Compatibility is not a performance guarantee, so test the actual media, resolution and frame rate before relying on it.
- Connect to YouTube: In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service and connect using the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Load the prerecorded video: Add the file as a media source in OBS, or use a playlist-capable workflow if you need multiple files to repeat. Check that playback loops as intended and that audio is present. Keep the media accessible for the full run.
- Choose conservative output settings: Use RTMPS where available, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval and a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p60. Do not exceed what the PC can encode or the connection can upload steadily.
- Test and monitor: Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate, check YouTube’s stream health and verify video, audio and looping. Keep the PC powered, prevent sleep, and arrange monitoring and a way to restart OBS or the stream after a failure.
A 24/7 broadcast is not the same as an archived recording. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as a complete video (YouTube live-stream encoder instructions).

Set up the VPS option
- Select a provider and instance: Choose an OS and instance that can sustain the intended encoding workload and outbound bitrate. Confirm sustained bandwidth, transfer billing and any included allowance before committing.
- Prepare the server: Install and secure the operating system, encoder and any playlist or playback tools you need. Configure access to the media files, whether stored on the VM or retrieved from storage you control.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube: Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream key, and configure the encoder to send the stream to YouTube using the current ingest settings. Keep the key private.
- Run a representative test: Test the exact files, audio, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Confirm the VM sustains encoding and network output rather than relying on a short burst-capacity figure.
- Configure recovery and monitoring: Arrange process supervision or alerts for encoder exit, playback failure and lost connectivity. Verify that restart behavior reconnects to YouTube and resumes the intended media rather than leaving a silent or frozen feed.
A VPS bill is workload-specific: compute, operating system, storage and outbound transfer affect the total. AWS publishes prices by configuration rather than one universal VPS monthly rate, and its on-demand pricing page notes that data transfer out is priced separately. It describes an aggregate 100 GB monthly internet-transfer-out allowance for AWS customers with regional exclusions; do not assume that allowance or pricing applies to every region, configuration or provider. Estimate your own transfer and use the live regional calculator before purchase (AWS EC2 on-demand pricing).
Plan for failures whichever option you use
Neither a desktop nor a general-purpose VPS is a complete reliability plan. YouTube advises continuous stream-quality monitoring; build recovery around the parts you control.

- Encoder stops: Monitor the process and configure a restart or alert. Verify that restarting restores playback and YouTube ingest.
- Connection drops: Check the local router/ISP or VPS network status and available capacity. YouTube may show degraded stream health or the stream may disconnect; reconnect and confirm the feed is live again.
- Video freezes or goes silent: Check source-file availability, playback state, audio routing and encoder output. Test the whole playlist, including transitions and end-of-file behavior.
- PC sleeps or reboots: Prevent sleep during operation and account for updates, power loss and restart behavior. A UPS or alternate connection may help, but does not remove the need for monitoring.
- VPS exceeds expected transfer or lacks sustained capacity: Review actual usage and provider terms, then resize or change the plan only after recalculating encoding requirements and full monthly cost.
- Stream key is exposed or rejected: Reset or recopy it from YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration. Never put the key in public logs, screenshots or shared scripts.
Copyright, reused content and stream archives
Using video files you own or are licensed to stream is essential: a file playing successfully does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its music, footage, artwork or other included material. Check licenses and permissions before going live, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules. Repeating content also does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; make sure the channel’s programming and rights meet YouTube’s current requirements.
Plan separately for the live feed and its archive. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams shorter than 12 hours, so a continuously running channel should not depend on one stream longer than that being saved as a complete recording.

Cost comparison: calculate the whole month
There is no evidence-based universal cost winner. Compare the cost of the PC you already own or need, electricity, broadband and maintenance against the VPS’s compute runtime, storage and data-transfer charges. If either option requires new hardware or a higher-tier connection, include that as well.

A cloud alternative if you do not want to maintain a PC or server
YouTube’s encoder directory includes Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos. It also lists AJA HELO Plus, a hardware encoder with an optional prerecorded-media scheduling function. These are options to investigate, not YouTube endorsements; YouTube says listed verified encoders are not made by YouTube (YouTube encoder directory).
StreamNeo is another option for a prerecorded YouTube stream: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping, playlists and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card.
