Network drops usually mean the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; rendering or encoding lag points to local GPU or encoder workload. The fix depends on which signal is rising.
This guide covers how to identify the cause, make low-risk network and OBS changes, check YouTube’s stream health, and prepare a long-running stream for recovery. It applies to OBS on Windows streaming to YouTube.

Identify which frames OBS is dropping
Open OBS’s statistics and note the dropped-frames counter, connection indicator, and rendering and encoding statistics. Record the output bitrate and the time you check them before changing settings. A counter that increases over time matters more than a one-off number.

The problem is typically the path from your PC to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide describes dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate.
- Rendering or encoding lag: OBS statistics or its log indicate rendering or encoding overload. This is a local performance issue; reducing network bitrate alone may not resolve it.
- Viewer buffering without OBS drops: Viewers may buffer because of their own connection, location, or device even while OBS reports no dropped frames. Confirm the OBS counter is rising before treating viewer reports as proof of a sender-side drop.
During a live event, also check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. They can report stream status and specific errors, which helps distinguish a delivery issue from a format or encoder problem.

Fix network dropped frames in a safe order
Change one thing at a time and watch whether the counter stabilizes. A change that improves one stream is useful evidence, not proof that it will solve every future interruption.
1. Compare bitrate with sustained upload capacity
OBS suggests starting with a video bitrate around 75% of total upload speed. Treat this as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee: available upload can fluctuate, especially over a long stream. If network drops continue, lower the video bitrate and observe the counter. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload capacity and choosing a quality that remains reliable, rather than assuming the highest listed bitrate will work on your connection.
YouTube’s current help guidance lists these H.264 recommendations; they are platform ranges, not a promise that any particular connection can sustain the upper end:

Other resolutions and codecs have different recommendations. Check YouTube’s Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the format you actually use. Run a speed test and, before relying on a setting for a long event, test with representative motion and audio while watching stream health.

2. Test another YouTube ingest server
Try a different ingest server in OBS as a reversible configuration test. If the result changes, the route to the original ingest server may be involved. It does not establish whether the cause is your ISP, an intermediate network, or the ingest route.
3. Test wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
If the PC is on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. This isolates a possible wireless-link issue; it will not fix every ISP, route, ingest, or local-encoder problem. A cable is worth replacing only if checks point to a faulty link.
4. Check Windows network software and OBS network options
Temporarily check whether a VPN, security product, or bundled network-prioritization utility is interfering. OBS specifically identifies utilities such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as worth checking.

In OBS for Windows, open Settings → Advanced → Network. OBS documents Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing as options some users report help. Test them individually rather than changing several network settings at once.

Dynamic bitrate can lower bitrate when congestion occurs, which may prevent some drops at the cost of reduced video quality. It can be a temporary resilience measure, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem.
For troubleshooting, OBS also lists Bind to IP set to Default and an IPv4-only test. Do not treat either as a universal optimization. If forcing IPv4 makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 behavior.
5. Check drivers, cables, and network hardware
Install current network drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer. Check the modem or router, network adapter, switch, extender, and cables for faults; restarting the modem or router can help with connectivity problems. If you are unsure whether hardware is at fault, contact your ISP before buying replacements. Persistent drops may come from ISP congestion or a route outside your home network, in which case ask the ISP to investigate.

If OBS identifies rendering or encoding lag rather than network drops, focus on the work your PC must do to render scenes and encode video. A GPU saturated by a game or other workload may leave too little capacity for OBS.

- Run OBS as administrator: On Windows, right-click OBS and choose Run as administrator.
- Reduce competing GPU work: Close or limit GPU-heavy processes. If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync and reduce graphics settings so OBS has rendering headroom.
- Simplify scenes: Remove or reduce unnecessary sources and scene complexity, then check OBS statistics again.
- Reduce output demands: If overload persists, lower output resolution or frame rate and retest.
Check the OBS log and system load to confirm whether rendering or encoding statistics improve. If the video itself looks or sounds poor, YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, and playback of a local archive. Changing bitrate is not a substitute for addressing a saturated GPU or an overloaded encoder.
Use YouTube settings as a compatibility check, not a network cure
For YouTube, the cited encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Verify that OBS’s output is compatible with the format you selected in YouTube Live Control Room.
Do not change codec or keyframe interval just because network drops are rising. First use OBS’s counter and YouTube’s health message to identify the issue. Adjust format settings when YouTube reports a configuration or format error, not as a presumed fix for an unstable connection.
Prepare a 24/7 stream for monitoring and recovery
A continuous broadcast needs operational checks as well as a stable encoder. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend monitoring audio and video quality, checking that the event is accessible, and confirming a local archive continues to grow. YouTube also recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player switches to the backup.

When the cause is unclear, compare three groups of evidence rather than repeatedly changing settings:
- OBS delivery: Is the network dropped-frames counter increasing, and what does the connection indicator show?
- Local performance: Do OBS rendering or encoding statistics show overload, and are GPU or CPU resources heavily occupied?
- YouTube health: What specific stream-health status or error appears in Live Control Room?
These checks can help reveal a failed ingest, a stopped archive, or degraded audio or video before it goes unnoticed. They do not make a 24/7 stream outage-proof.
