If your Windows fingerprint reader is not working, sign in with your Windows Hello PIN or account password first. Then clean and dry the sensor, enroll your fingerprint again from several angles, and update the reader’s driver from Windows Update or the computer’s manufacturer. If Fingerprint recognition is missing entirely, check whether the PC has compatible reader hardware, whether its biometric driver appears in Device Manager, and whether Windows 11 Enhanced Sign-in Security is blocking or requiring an external reader.
These steps distinguish a recognition problem from a reader-detection or hardware problem, so you can choose the right fix instead of repeatedly deleting your fingerprint profile.

What Windows fingerprint sign-in requires
Fingerprint sign-in is a Windows Hello method, alongside facial recognition and a PIN. It only appears when Windows can use a compatible fingerprint reader and its driver. A laptop may have an integrated sensor in the power button, palm rest, or keyboard, while a desktop may need a USB reader that explicitly supports Windows Hello and your Windows version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere are two different failure patterns:
- Recognition failure: Fingerprint recognition is listed, but Windows rejects your finger, repeatedly asks you to try again, or stops accepting a print that previously worked.
- Detection or availability failure: Fingerprint recognition is absent from Sign-in options, the reader is missing from Device Manager, or Windows reports that no compatible fingerprint device is available.
Recognition failures are often caused by a dirty or damp sensor, a changed finger position, or a damaged enrollment. Detection failures usually involve hardware, drivers, firmware, a disabled device, or a Windows security setting.

Regain access before changing anything
Windows requires a PIN or password as a fallback when biometric sign-in fails. At the sign-in screen, choose Sign-in options, select the PIN or key icon, and enter your Windows Hello PIN. You can also choose the password option for the account.
If you do not remember the PIN, select I forgot my PIN. From Windows, the same recovery path is Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello) > I forgot my PIN. Complete the account verification prompts, create a new PIN, and test it before troubleshooting the reader. A PIN reset does not repair a sensor, but it restores a reliable way into Windows while you work.
Clean and inspect the fingerprint sensor
Microsoft’s direct guidance is: “Ensure your device’s fingerprint reader is clean and dry.” Shut down or lock the computer, then wipe the reader gently with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Let moisture, hand lotion, perspiration, dust, or cleaning fluid evaporate completely. Do not pour liquid onto the sensor, scrape it, or use abrasive material.

- IMPORTANT NOTES — PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASE - Supports Win10/11 32/64-bit original system. Not for streamlined/Lite versions (biometric component removed).Only supports Windows Hello. Does not encrypt USB drives/files. Windows only — not for Mac.Prefer motherboard USB 2.0 port. USB 3.0 hubs/docking stations may cause unstable recognition.
Check whether a case, keyboard cover, sticker, or debris is covering an integrated reader. On a USB model, disconnect it, inspect the connector for visible damage, and reconnect it directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub. Try another USB port if Windows does not detect it. A reader that is physically cracked, loose, or intermittently disconnecting may need model-specific service or replacement rather than software changes.
Enroll your fingerprint again
A fresh enrollment fixes many cases where the sensor works but no longer recognizes a finger. Use the hand and finger you normally use, with the skin clean and dry.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Expand Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
- Select Remove for the old enrollment if Windows offers that option.
- Select Add a finger, confirm your PIN, and begin enrollment.
- Touch the sensor repeatedly, lifting and replacing your finger as prompted. Change the angle slightly so Windows records the sides and edges, not only the center of the fingertip.
- Complete the setup and lock the PC with Windows key + L. Test the new enrollment at the sign-in screen.
Add a second finger from the same menu as a fallback. Enrolling the index finger of the other hand can help if one finger is cut, swollen, unusually dry, or otherwise difficult for the sensor to read. If enrollment itself fails, skip repeated attempts and continue with the driver and detection checks below.

Update or reinstall the biometric driver
The reader’s driver is the software layer Windows uses to communicate with the sensor. Laptop and keyboard readers commonly depend on an original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) or independent hardware vendor (IHV) package, so a generic Windows driver may not provide every function.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates, including optional driver updates when they are clearly identified for the biometric device.
- Restart the PC even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Return to Sign-in options and test the reader.
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look under Biometric devices. Also check Universal Serial Bus controllers for an external reader and Unknown devices for hardware Windows cannot identify.
- A warning icon indicates a driver or device problem. Right-click the reader, choose Properties, and read the Device status message and error code.
- Use Update driver to search automatically, or install the package downloaded from the computer or reader manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and Windows edition.
- If the reader is listed but still fails, choose Uninstall device only when you can follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Restart so Windows can reinstall the driver, then test again.
Do not install a driver intended for a different laptop revision or reader model. Use the exact model number or service tag printed on the computer, its support application, or its underside. Keep your PIN or password available because removing a biometric driver can temporarily remove fingerprint sign-in.
When Fingerprint recognition is missing
Confirm that the PC actually has a reader
Signing in with a fingerprint requires the device to have a fingerprint reader. Check the manufacturer’s specifications, the keyboard or power button for a sensor, and Device Manager. Some computers have the same chassis with different configurations, so a fingerprint-shaped icon or a similar model name does not prove that the sensor is installed.

Check Windows 11 Enhanced Sign-in Security
On supported Windows 11 systems, review Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options for Enhanced Sign-in Security and any setting that controls external fingerprint readers. The wording and availability can vary by Windows build and hardware. If an external-reader option is changed, restart the computer so Windows can apply the setting and, when Microsoft’s guidance calls for it, reinstall the reader driver.
Look for a disabled or hidden device
In Device Manager, open View > Show hidden devices. A disabled reader may have a down-arrow icon; right-click it and choose Enable device. If it is absent even as an unknown device, shut down completely, reconnect a USB reader, or check the OEM firmware and hardware-diagnostics utility. A missing device cannot be repaired by deleting and recreating Windows Hello enrollments.
Review changes that happened before the failure
If fingerprint sign-in worked and then stopped, identify what changed immediately beforehand. A Windows update, OEM driver, firmware update, security-policy change, or newly installed app can affect Hello. Surface guidance also points to a recent app, driver, or update as a possible cause.

- In Settings > Windows Update > Update history, note recent quality, feature, and driver updates.
- In Device Manager, open the reader’s Properties > Driver tab. If Roll Back Driver is available and the timing matches, use it, restart, and test.
- For an OEM driver or firmware package installed immediately before the failure, use the manufacturer’s documented rollback or recovery process.
- Restore or reset Windows only after ordinary cleaning, enrollment, driver, and settings checks. Back up important files and confirm that you know your account credentials first.
Do not remove several drivers or updates at once. Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify the cause and return to the working configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Integrated reader or USB reader: which path applies?
| Consideration | Integrated reader | USB reader |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Built into the laptop, keyboard, or power button; availability depends on the exact configuration. | Separate accessory connected to a USB port; useful for a desktop or PC without a built-in sensor. |
| Driver source | Usually the laptop, keyboard, or sensor manufacturer’s OEM/IHV driver and sometimes firmware. | The reader vendor’s Windows Hello-compatible driver, if one is required. |
| Ergonomics | Fixed placement; convenient but sometimes awkward if the sensor is on a power button or compact keyboard. | Can be positioned for easier access, but the cable or device can be unplugged. |
| Failure clue | Missing after a firmware or laptop-driver change can indicate an OEM package or hardware issue. | Missing after reconnecting points first to the USB port, hub, cable, driver, or compatibility. |
| Multiple fingers | Windows Hello enrollment controls how many fingers you add; the sensor’s capabilities still apply. | Windows Hello enrollment controls the profiles, while the reader’s specifications determine supported operation. |
If there is no built-in reader, Microsoft says you can purchase and configure a USB-connected fingerprint reader through Windows Hello. Select a listing that explicitly states Windows Hello support, supports your target Windows version, uses a connector your PC has, and provides a vendor driver or clear driver requirements. “Biometric” alone is not enough to establish Windows Hello compatibility.
Reset Windows Hello enrollment and PIN safely
Removing and recreating a fingerprint profile is appropriate when the option is present but recognition remains unreliable. It is not a substitute for installing a missing driver. Before removing profiles, confirm that you can sign in with the PIN or password.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Under Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello), remove each stale fingerprint enrollment.
- Under PIN (Windows Hello), use I forgot my PIN only if the PIN itself is unavailable or rejected.
- Restart Windows, install or confirm the correct biometric driver, and enroll one finger from several angles.
- Add a second finger and test both before relying on fingerprint sign-in.
Windows Hello may require the PIN after a restart, security change, or other sign-in event even when the sensor is healthy. That behavior is a normal fallback, not proof that the fingerprint hardware has failed.
When the reader probably needs service or replacement
Escalate to the device maker when the exact driver and firmware are installed but the reader never appears in Device Manager, repeatedly disconnects, shows a persistent hardware error, or fails in the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostic. Use the exact model or service tag when requesting a replacement. For a USB reader, test it on another compatible Windows PC if available; a device that is not detected there either is more likely to be defective than misconfigured on the first computer.
If the reader appears and enrollment succeeds but one particular finger is never recognized, check for wet, excessively dry, damaged, or covered skin and enroll a different finger. If every enrolled finger fails while the device remains detected, return to the driver, firmware, and recent-change checks rather than buying replacement hardware immediately.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Can you sign in? Use the PIN or password; reset the PIN through Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello) > I forgot my PIN if necessary.
- Is Fingerprint recognition listed? If yes, clean and dry the sensor, then re-enroll from multiple angles.
- Is the reader listed in Device Manager? Update or reinstall the exact biometric driver and restart.
- Is the option missing? Confirm the hardware, inspect hidden or disabled devices, and review Windows 11 Enhanced Sign-in Security and external-reader settings.
- Did it fail after a change? Check update history and consider a matching driver rollback before broader recovery.
- No integrated hardware? Choose a USB reader that explicitly supports Windows Hello, your Windows version, connector, and vendor-driver requirements.
