The dependable fix for an MSVCR100.dll missing error is to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Redistributable for the architecture your application uses. A 32-bit application normally needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows; a native 64-bit application needs x64. Install the official runtime, restart the application, and repair or reinstall the application if the message continues.
What MSVCR100.dll is and why Windows needs it
MSVCR100.dll is a Microsoft C runtime library installed by the Visual C++ 2010 runtime. Software compiled with Microsoft Visual C++ can call functions in this shared library instead of carrying every runtime component inside its own folder. When Windows starts such a program, the loader must locate a compatible runtime DLL before the program can run.

If that dependency is absent, incompatible, or incorrectly deployed, Windows may display messages such as “msvcr100.dll is missing from your computer” or “the code execution cannot proceed because MSVCR100.dll was not found.” Microsoft describes these as application-startup failures in which a required library cannot be found. The message identifies a dependency problem, not necessarily a problem with Windows itself.
Why the error appears
- The Visual C++ 2010 runtime is not installed. This is common after a clean Windows installation, a system reset, or installation of an older application that assumes the runtime is already present.
- The installed package has the wrong architecture. A 32-bit program generally needs the x86 runtime. Installing only x64 on 64-bit Windows does not satisfy every 32-bit application.
- The application installer deployed its dependency incorrectly. Some vendors bundle a private, side-by-side runtime beside the executable. If that deployment is incomplete or damaged, the program can still report a missing DLL even when a system redistributable is installed.
- The application installation is damaged. A failed update, removed component, or incomplete uninstall can leave the program unable to locate the runtime it expects.
The safe repair in one view
| Situation | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit application | Install the official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x86 redistributable | The application’s architecture controls which runtime it can load. |
| 64-bit application | Install the official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x64 redistributable | A native 64-bit executable requires the 64-bit runtime. |
| Architecture unclear | Install both official 2010 SP1 packages | This covers applications of both architectures without copying a loose DLL. |
| Error after installation | Use the application’s Repair option or reinstall it from the original vendor | The application may require a private runtime or may have deployed its files incorrectly. |
Step 1: Identify which application is failing
Read the title bar or the first line of the error dialog and note the executable named there. If several programs show the message, record each one separately. The executable’s architecture, not the architecture of Windows alone, determines the first package to install.

Checking architecture with Task Manager
- Start the affected application until the error appears, or leave it running if it opens partially.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details. If the Details tab is hidden, choose More details first.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns if you need an architecture column. On Windows editions that expose it, the entry may show whether a process is 32-bit.
Task Manager’s label can vary by Windows version. If it does not clearly identify the bitness, check the application vendor’s system requirements or install both official redistributables as described below. Do not infer that an application is 64-bit merely because Windows is 64-bit.
Step 2: Download the official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 packages
- Open Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page.
- Find the Visual Studio 2010 (VC++ 10.0) SP1 entries.
- Choose the download that matches the application: x86 for a 32-bit program or x64 for a native 64-bit program.
- If you do not know the application architecture, download both official packages. Installing x86 and x64 side by side is a normal compatibility measure because each serves a different class of executable.
Microsoft lists these 2010 SP1 packages as version 10.0.40219.325 in its current download listing, identified there as Microsoft, 2025. The package is legacy software, but Microsoft continues to make it available for older applications that still depend on it.
Step 3: Install the matching redistributable
- Close the affected application and any installer or updater for it.
- Run the downloaded Microsoft installer. Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt if one appears.
- Read and accept the license terms, then select Install. If the installer offers Repair instead, choose Repair; that indicates the package is already registered and can be refreshed.
- Wait for setup to finish. If you downloaded both architectures, complete one installer before starting the other.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it. Even when no restart is requested, restarting before testing removes a running process that may still hold old library information.
The redistributable installs the Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries as a managed package. It is safer than obtaining an individual DLL because the installer supplies the files and registration expected for that runtime release.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 4: Test the application
Launch the same executable that produced the message. If it opens normally, the missing dependency was the immediate cause. Test the application’s main function rather than stopping at the first window; an application can start and still fail later if another component has a separate dependency.
If the dialog still names MSVCR100.dll, confirm that you installed the package matching the program. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows commonly needs x86, while a native 64-bit application needs x64. Installing only x64 will not supply the 32-bit runtime required by a 32-bit process.
Step 5: Repair or reinstall the application when the runtime is present
Use the application’s built-in repair option
- Open Settings and go to Apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options and then Repair when that control is available. Traditional desktop installers may instead provide Repair from Programs and Features in Control Panel.
- Restart the application and test it again.
Repair keeps the application’s data when the installer supports it, but the exact controls depend on how the vendor packaged the program.
Reinstall from the original vendor
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the application and reinstall it using the original vendor’s installer or installation media. Downloading the program again can restore a missing private runtime or other files that the application expects beside its executable. Use the vendor’s documented installer for the same edition and architecture whenever one is specified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft notes that missing-runtime messages can result from incorrect redistributable deployment by an application installer. Therefore, reinstalling the application is not a substitute for the Visual C++ package; it addresses a separate possibility in which the application’s own deployment is incomplete.

Step 6: Check for a private or side-by-side runtime requirement
Some applications do not rely exclusively on the system-wide redistributable. Their vendor may ship a private runtime in the application directory or use a side-by-side configuration. Read the vendor’s support article for the exact program and look for requirements mentioning Visual C++ 2010, VC++ 10.0, a private runtime, or side-by-side assemblies.
Follow the vendor’s documented architecture requirement exactly. Do not replace a private file with a DLL copied from another computer, and do not rename an x64 file to make it appear suitable for a 32-bit application. The bitness and version must match the executable and the vendor’s deployment model.

| Question | x86 package | x64 package |
|---|---|---|
| Which executable uses it? | 32-bit Windows applications | Native 64-bit Windows applications |
| Can it run on 64-bit Windows? | Yes; 64-bit Windows supports 32-bit applications | Yes; it is intended for 64-bit applications |
| Does Windows architecture decide the package? | No. The application’s architecture is controlling. | No. A 64-bit edition of Windows can still run x86 software. |
| Can both be installed? | Yes | Yes |
Installing both official packages is reasonable when several older programs are involved or when the vendor does not state the architecture. They remain separate runtimes; installing x64 does not convert or replace x86 components.

What not to do
- Do not download a loose MSVCR100.dll from an arbitrary DLL website. The file may be the wrong version, modified, or built for the wrong architecture.
- Do not copy an unknown DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. This can create a second, harder-to-diagnose mismatch and does not repair the underlying runtime installation.
- Do not delete other Visual C++ redistributables to “make room.” Different applications can depend on different runtime generations, and removing one can create new startup failures.
- Do not assume a missing-file message proves malware. The documented causes include absent, incompatible, or incorrectly deployed runtime files. Use your normal security software separately if you have an independent security concern.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 considerations
The Visual C++ 2010 runtime can still be required on current Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems because application dependencies do not automatically change when Windows is upgraded. Installing it for one older application does not mean new software should be built against this legacy runtime.
Microsoft states that Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 reached the end of extended support on July 14, 2020. End of support explains why the runtime is old; it does not make the official redistributable unsafe when an application specifically requires it. Obtain it from Microsoft’s current redistributable download listing and keep Windows and the affected application maintained according to their vendors’ support policies.
When the error changes after an update
The application updated and then stopped launching
Install the matching 2010 SP1 package again, then use the application’s Repair option. An update may have replaced or removed a dependency, or it may have changed which architecture it uses.
Only one program fails while others work
That pattern points toward the failing program’s own deployment or a private runtime requirement. Check its vendor documentation and reinstall that application from the original source after confirming the runtime architecture.

Several older programs fail at once
Install both official 2010 SP1 architectures, restart Windows, and test each program. If failures persist across unrelated applications, document the executable names and the exact dialogs before contacting the vendors; each may require a different runtime generation or private package.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Record the executable named in the error.
- Determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, using the vendor’s requirements when Task Manager is inconclusive.
- Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable x86, x64, or both from Microsoft’s official download listing.
- Restart the application and Windows if requested.
- Use the application’s Repair option if the message remains.
- Reinstall from the original vendor and check for a documented private or side-by-side runtime.
- Avoid loose DLL downloads and manual copying into Windows system folders.
