The fastest way to increase download speed is to identify where the slowdown occurs before changing anything. Run a speed test beside your router, repeat it over Ethernet if possible, and compare both results with the service level on your internet plan. A good Ethernet result with a poor Wi‑Fi result points to wireless coverage, interference or router placement. Poor results on both connections point toward the modem, line, service outage, device software or the plan itself.
What determines your download speed?
Microsoft describes the type of internet connection as the most important factor in connection speed. Your subscribed broadband tier sets an upper limit, but the speed that reaches a particular download is also affected by congestion, the modem, router, network cable, Wi‑Fi radio, device hardware, software and the remote server providing the file.

Wi‑Fi adds variables that do not exist on a direct cable. Ofcom notes that the router, device, distance, walls and interference can all affect Wi‑Fi speed. Google similarly identifies device type, distance, frequency and physical barriers as causes of variation. This is why one phone can download quickly beside the access point while a computer in another room struggles on the same connection.
Measure the problem before trying fixes
1. Record a baseline
- Pause game updates, cloud synchronisation, streaming video and large uploads on every device you can control.
- Close browser tabs or applications that may be downloading in the background.
- Use a reputable browser-based speed test. Run it at least twice, using the same test server when the service allows it.
- Write down download speed, upload speed, latency and the time of day. A single result is only a snapshot; several results reveal whether the issue is persistent or related to busy periods.
Test first in the same room as the router with the device stationary. Do not compare a test beside the router with a later test from a distant bedroom and treat the difference as a change in your broadband service.

2. Test over Ethernet
Connect the computer directly to a LAN port on the router with a known-good Ethernet cable. Disable Wi‑Fi temporarily so the computer cannot silently switch back to wireless, then repeat the test. A Cat6 cable is suitable for the diagnostic step and for most home broadband speeds.
| Result beside the router | Result over Ethernet | Most likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Low | Modem, broadband line, ISP service, plan capacity or a device/software issue |
| High | High | Wireless coverage or interference in the original test location |
| Low | High | Wi‑Fi radio, band selection, router placement or local wireless congestion |
| Variable | Variable | Congestion, competing traffic, unstable equipment or an intermittent line |
Microsoft’s guidance uses this same separation: when Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi does not, the router’s wireless connection is the likely problem; when the computer can reach the router but internet performance remains poor, the modem or ISP may be responsible.
Fix a slow Wi‑Fi connection
Move the device closer to the access point
Repeat the test at several distances. A shorter path usually means a stronger signal and fewer retransmissions. If the speed improves as you approach the router, the broadband service may be fine and the issue is coverage rather than the plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImprove router placement
- Place the router in an open, central location rather than inside a cabinet, behind a television or on the floor.
- Keep it away from thick masonry, large appliances, metal shelving and other objects that can block or reflect radio signals.
- Raise it where practical and keep its antennas in the orientation recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not hide the access point behind furniture or walls. Openreach specifically recommends avoiding blocked placement and considering a booster where signal is weak.
Try the other Wi‑Fi band
Most modern routers offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, sometimes under one combined network name. The 2.4 GHz band generally travels farther and penetrates walls better, but it is more vulnerable to interference from neighbouring networks and household devices. The 5 GHz band often delivers higher throughput at short range, but its signal falls off more quickly through walls.

- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Open your router’s management page or app and identify the names of the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
- Connect the test device to one band, run the test, then connect it to the other band and repeat from the same location.
- Keep the band that gives the better result for that room. A device may need 2.4 GHz in a distant room and 5 GHz near the router.
Do not change channel width, transmit power or other advanced radio settings unless you first record the original values. An incorrect setting can reduce compatibility or make other devices disconnect.
Reduce local interference
If speeds change when neighbours are online or when several wireless devices are active, interference or airtime competition may be involved. Temporarily switch off unused wireless equipment, move the router away from other radio devices and retest. A consistent wired result with inconsistent wireless results supports this diagnosis.
Restart the modem and router correctly
Microsoft and Ofcom both recommend rebooting networking equipment as an early troubleshooting step. A restart clears temporary faults and forces a fresh connection to the ISP, but it does not increase the speed tier on your account.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop active downloads and save work.
- Unplug the router’s power. If you have a separate modem or fibre termination device, unplug that as well.
- Wait at least 30 seconds so the equipment fully powers down.
- Power the modem or fibre device first. Wait until its connection lights settle according to the manufacturer’s normal startup pattern.
- Power the router and wait for its Wi‑Fi and internet indicators to become stable.
- Reconnect one test device and repeat the wired and wireless tests.
If the equipment repeatedly loses its connection, record the time and indicator pattern. That information helps the provider distinguish a local Wi‑Fi fault from a line or service fault.

Stop other software from consuming bandwidth
Background traffic can make a connection appear slow even when the broadband line is performing normally. Microsoft lists background programs, browser add-ons, spyware, viruses, memory and disk condition among factors that can affect internet performance.
Windows
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, select the Network column to sort by current usage.
- Pause or close applications that are downloading, uploading or synchronising, such as cloud-drive clients, game launchers and backup tools.
- Check the Startup apps tab and prevent nonessential launchers from starting automatically if they continually consume bandwidth.
macOS
- Open Activity Monitor from Applications and inspect the Network tab.
- Identify applications with unusually high sent or received data.
- Quit only programs you recognise and can safely stop; leave system processes alone.
Run the operating system’s trusted security checks and keep the browser and extensions current. Security software should complement, not replace, sensible download-source and account-security practices. If disk space is nearly full or the device is under heavy CPU or memory pressure, the download may be completing normally while the computer is slow to write or process the file.
Update networking software and router firmware
Update the router
Check the manufacturer’s administration page or mobile app for a firmware update. Read the release notes, export or photograph the current configuration if the router supports that option, and keep power connected throughout the update. Never interrupt a firmware installation; a failed update can leave the router unusable until recovery procedures are applied.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
On macOS, network drivers are delivered through macOS updates and manufacturer firmware rather than a separate generic driver package. Install pending system updates, then check the router or adapter maker’s instructions for compatible firmware.
Updating is most useful when the slowdown began after an operating-system change, when the adapter disconnects, or when a manufacturer lists a fix for your model. Do not install a driver intended for a different adapter or operating-system edition.
Check the network hardware path
Inspect the cable and ports
- Reseat both Ethernet plugs until the retaining clips click.
- Try another cable and a different LAN port on the router.
- Confirm that the computer’s Ethernet link negotiates at the expected speed in its network settings.
- If a USB Ethernet adapter or dock is involved, test the computer’s built-in port or a different adapter.
A damaged cable or a port negotiating at a lower link speed can limit downloads while Wi‑Fi appears unaffected. Test with one variable changed at a time so you know which replacement made a difference.

Older Wi‑Fi hardware, low-power tablets and inexpensive USB adapters may not support the same standards or channel widths as the router. Compare results with a newer device in the same location. If only one computer is slow while other devices reach the expected speed, concentrate on that computer’s adapter, drivers, background tasks and storage rather than replacing the broadband plan.

Improve coverage for a weak room
If Ethernet and a nearby Wi‑Fi test are fast but a distant room remains slow, a coverage solution is more appropriate than a faster service tier. Ofcom identifies distance, walls and interference as speed factors, and Openreach recommends a Wi‑Fi booster for weak areas.
Choose an extender when
- Only one small area has poor coverage.
- You can place the extender where it still receives a strong signal from the main router.
- You accept that a wireless extender may have lower throughput than a wired access point because it must relay traffic over the same radio link.
Choose a mesh system when
- Several rooms or floors need consistent coverage.
- You want one managed network name and automatic roaming between nodes.
- You can position nodes with a clear path or connect them by Ethernet for a wired backhaul.
Placement matters more than simply adding hardware. Put an extender or mesh node between the router and the weak area, not inside the dead zone. After installation, repeat tests from the exact locations that previously failed and compare both speed and stability.
Decide whether the internet plan is the bottleneck
When a direct Ethernet test is consistently below the service level you pay for, check the provider’s service-status page before changing home equipment. Then contact the ISP and ask three specific questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Is the result within the expected range for my plan and access technology?
- Are there outages, line errors or maintenance affecting my address?
- Is a faster or full-fibre product available at my location, and what equipment does it require?
Run tests at more than one time of day and provide the recorded dates, times, connection type and device. Ask the provider how it defines the advertised speed, because headline rates and measured speeds may use different conditions. If the wired result meets the plan but distant rooms do not, a plan upgrade will not repair the in-home wireless path; improve coverage first.
Quick Recap
Match the fix to the symptom
| Symptom | First action | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Fast beside router, slow in one room | Move the router, test both bands and remove obstructions | Add a correctly placed extender or mesh node if coverage remains weak |
| Slow on Wi‑Fi and Ethernet | Restart modem/router and stop background traffic | Check outages, line condition and plan with the ISP |
| Only one computer is slow | Inspect Task Manager or Activity Monitor and update its adapter software | Test another adapter, cable or device |
| Speed collapses when many devices are active | Identify heavy downloads and uploads | Schedule large transfers or consider equipment and service capacity for the number of users |
| Connection drops as well as slowing | Record times, indicator lights and whether Ethernet also drops | Escalate persistent wired drops to the ISP; address wireless placement if only Wi‑Fi drops |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Testing only once: one result cannot show normal variation or peak-time congestion.
- Blaming Wi‑Fi without a wired comparison: Ethernet is the quickest way to separate wireless and broadband faults.
- Putting an extender in the dead zone: it needs a healthy signal from the main router to relay useful speed.
- Changing advanced settings at random: record every original value and change one setting at a time.
- Installing an incompatible driver: verify the exact adapter model and operating-system edition.
- Assuming a faster plan fixes every room: a service upgrade cannot remove walls, interference or poor router placement.
- Ignoring competing traffic: cloud backups, game updates and other devices can consume the available bandwidth during a test.
A repeatable testing checklist
- Pause other downloads and note the time.
- Test beside the router over Wi‑Fi.
- Test from the same location over Ethernet.
- Test the original problem room on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
- Restart modem and router, then repeat the tests.
- Check Task Manager or Activity Monitor for competing traffic.
- Update router firmware and the network adapter only when appropriate, preserving the original settings.
- Use an extender or mesh system when the wired and nearby wireless results are good but coverage is poor.
- Contact the ISP when wired results remain below the expected plan level or the connection is unstable.
If updating network drivers manually is difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional shortcut. It scans more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, installs only official drivers, shows current and recommended versions, and provides driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; the 2-day free trial requires no credit card, after which a subscription is required. Results vary, and no tool repairs every networking problem.
