If File Explorer keeps freezing, closing, or failing to start, work through these checks from least disruptive to more involved. They are practical troubleshooting options—not ten guaranteed cures—and some apply only to particular Windows versions or symptoms. Microsoft calls the app File Explorer, though many people still call it Windows Explorer.
Start with updates and a restart
1. Install available Windows updates
In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install updates that are available, following any prompts to restart. Microsoft recommends checking for updates when File Explorer will not open or start. Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter page for the support notice.
2. Restart the PC
Restart even if Windows Update did not request it. Microsoft notes that restarting helps ensure pending updates are installed. Save open work first, then use Start > Power > Restart.

3. Check the paging-file setting in Windows 10
Microsoft’s File Explorer article includes this check for Windows 10: open Advanced system settings, then under Performance choose Settings > Advanced. Under Virtual memory, select Change and check whether Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is selected. Follow the prompts if you change the setting. This is a Windows 10-specific suggestion in that guidance, not an established universal fix for recurring crashes on Windows 11.
4. Free space with Disk Cleanup
Search Windows for Disk Cleanup, choose the drive to clean, and review the categories before removing files. If you select Recycle Bin, check its contents first: items emptied from it may no longer be available for recovery. Microsoft includes Disk Cleanup among its File Explorer troubleshooting options.

5. Run System Maintenance if it is available
Open Control Panel, search for Troubleshooting, and look for the System Maintenance troubleshooter. Run it as administrator if that option is offered. The Control Panel route and troubleshooter may not be available in every Windows version or configuration.
Repair Windows system files if corruption is suspected
6. Run DISM, then System File Checker
Microsoft’s repair instructions say to run DISM before System File Checker (SFC). Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run the first command, wait for it to finish, then run the second:

sfc /scannow
DISM can obtain files needed to repair the Windows image; SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy. Let SFC reach 100% verification before closing the window. If SFC says it could not perform the requested operation, Microsoft advises running the scan in Safe Mode. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
Use recovery options only when they fit the problem
7. Try Startup Repair for a Windows startup problem
Startup Repair—also called Automatic Repair in some recovery screens—is for Windows startup problems, not a routine cure for every File Explorer crash. To reach it, enter the Windows Recovery Environment through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup in Windows 10, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Labels and routes can vary; follow the recovery prompts for your installation.

8. Consider removing a recent update if the timing fits
If the problem began after a Windows update, uninstalling that update might help. Use Windows Recovery Environment and choose the update-uninstall option, following the on-screen prompts. This is a conditional option for a problem that started after an update, not a general recommendation to remove updates. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guide explains update removal and other recovery choices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →9. Back up before reinstalling or choosing a more disruptive recovery
If easier steps do not help, review the available Windows recovery or reinstall choices. Their effects differ: some options may preserve personal files, while others can remove files, apps, or settings. Read the description for the specific option on your PC and back up important files before proceeding. Microsoft recommends starting with the least disruptive recovery option because some choices can cause data loss. Use the recovery options guide to compare what each route does.

10. Restart or launch Windows Explorer from Task Manager
This step matches a specific symptom: a blank screen with a cursor, where Windows Explorer may not be running. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If Windows Explorer appears in the process list, select it and choose Restart. If it is absent, choose File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter. These steps come from Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance; they are not a general fix for repeated crashes when the desktop is otherwise visible.
