Three high-impact Razorpay integration risks are easy to miss in review: launching Checkout without a server-created order, trusting browser-returned payment fields without verifying the signature, and treating authorization or webhook delivery as proof that a payment is captured. Razorpay’s guidance provides concrete checks for each; this article describes common review risks, not a measured ranking or a claim about how often they occur.
1. Checkout is not tied to a server-created order
Razorpay’s integration documentation says, “An order should be created for every payment.” Create the order through the server-side Orders API, associate it with the intended purchase and amount in trusted server state, and pass its returned order_id into Checkout. Razorpay says payments made without an order_id cannot be captured and will be automatically refunded. Razorpay’s Python integration steps

What to check in review
- Is the order created on the server before Checkout opens?
- Does the server bind the order ID and amount to the application’s intended purchase?
- Does Checkout receive the ID returned by that server-created order?
- Does the backend avoid treating a frontend-supplied amount or order ID as authoritative?
A client can initiate a purchase, but it should not define the trusted amount or transaction association. The server should use its own purchase record when creating the order and when later validating the payment.

Checkout returns razorpay_payment_id, razorpay_order_id, and razorpay_signature. Those values are inputs to server-side verification, not proof by themselves that the payment should be accepted. Razorpay’s guidance describes verifying a SHA-256 HMAC over order_id + "|" + razorpay_payment_id with the API secret. It also says the order ID used to generate the HMAC must come from a trusted source. Integration steps and Razorpay security checklist

What to check in review
- Does the browser send the returned fields to a backend endpoint?
- Does that endpoint retrieve the expected order ID from trusted server-side state rather than trusting the browser’s
razorpay_order_id? - Does the backend verify the signature with the server-held API secret before accepting the payment result?
- Is the API secret excluded from frontend code, mobile builds, and other client-accessible environments?
A success callback is useful for moving the user interface forward, but fulfillment should depend on the backend’s verified result. Keep the secret on the server, and make the server’s recorded purchase and order the reference point for verification.
3. Authorization, capture, and webhook delivery are treated as the same event
An authorized payment is not necessarily captured. Razorpay says to deliver products or services only after capture; uncaptured payments are automatically refunded. A review should therefore find a clear state transition from authorization to capture and ensure fulfillment is gated on captured status. Razorpay integration steps

Handle asynchronous updates and immediate answers
Webhooks are for asynchronous automation, so a user-facing flow should not assume an event has already arrived. Use webhook events to drive background work, and fetch the current payment or order state from the API when a critical screen needs an immediate answer before a webhook arrives. Validate webhook signatures as a separate security control. Webhook validation guidance and Razorpay security checklist

Keep order state separate from refund state
Razorpay documents that an order becomes attempted when a payment is first attempted and paid after successful capture. It remains paid even if the associated payment is later refunded. Model the order lifecycle and refund status separately; a refund should not be represented as though it simply changed the order back to unpaid. Razorpay order states

A compact review checklist
- Trace the purchase from the server-side order creation to the Checkout options. Confirm the amount, purchase association, and order ID are kept in trusted server state.
- Trace Checkout’s returned fields to the backend. Confirm it uses the server’s expected order ID and verifies the HMAC using the API secret before accepting the result.
- Trace payment status to fulfillment. Confirm capture is required, webhook signatures are checked, and a critical synchronous flow can fetch current API state when necessary.
- Trace refunds separately from order lifecycle status so a refunded payment does not silently rewrite the order’s documented state.
