If the game was made for DOS, use DOSBox instead. For an adventure or role-playing game supported by ScummVM, that may be the cleaner route. The right choice depends on the game’s original platform and engine—not just its age.
There is no universal compatibility switch. The steps below help you identify the right runtime, make the disc or its files available, and avoid common CD-audio and multi-disc problems.

First, identify what the game was made to run on
A game sold on a Windows CD-ROM was not necessarily a Windows game. Some discs contain DOS games, while some adventure and role-playing games can be run through ScummVM if that specific title is supported.

For a Windows game, try Wine or Lutris
Wine is the starting point for a Windows executable. Lutris can help manage game installations and launch configurations; its installer documentation is organized around individual games, so search for the exact title rather than assuming one setup fits every 1990s release. Follow the installation instructions for that game and check whether they expect the original disc, copied files, or a particular configuration.

Lutris’s download page recommends a recent Wine version for Windows games. It also explains that Lutris uses a custom, game-optimized Wine version while playing, and that a separate external Wine setup is not needed for the Flatpak build. These are Lutris setup details, not evidence that a specific old game is compatible.
For a DOS game, mount the CD in DOSBox
DOSBox emulates a DOS environment. Its manual says to install DOS games inside DOSBox, rather than installing them outside the emulator and expecting them to work the same way afterward. For a CD-based installer, make both a writable hard-drive folder and the CD available to DOSBox.

When Linux has mounted a physical CD, DOSBox documents this example for exposing the mount point as an emulated CD-ROM drive:

mount d /media/cdrom -t cdromReplace /media/cdrom with the actual mount point on your system. Linux mount locations and disc volume labels vary. DOSBox’s CD-ROM mode provides the MSCDEX interface that DOS games may require. If a game does not recognize the disc, check that you mounted the correct location, used CD-ROM mode, and supplied the correct volume label where needed. Choose a disc image that preserves what the game needs
A disc image can make CD access easier, but the format matters if the game uses CD audio. An ISO contains disc data but does not preserve audio tracks from a mixed-mode CD. DOSBox’s documentation prefers a CUE/BIN pair when those tracks matter. A game may also perform its own disc check, so having an image mounted does not guarantee that every title will accept it.
- Use an ISO when the game needs only the data track and the title’s setup instructions allow it.
- Prefer a CUE/BIN image when the original disc includes CD audio that the game plays during use.
- For a physical disc, make sure Linux can read it and expose the correct system mount point to DOSBox.
Handle multiple discs according to the runtime
DOSBox: switch mounted images during play
DOSBox documents mounting multiple disc images and switching between them with Ctrl+F4. Use the game’s own disc-swap prompt as your cue, and make sure the next disc image is mounted and available to DOSBox.

ScummVM: put required game files on disk
ScummVM says it can use CD audio directly from the game CD in most cases. It also documents extracting tracks, converting them to MP3, FLAC, M4A, or OGG, and placing them beside the game data. Multi-CD ScummVM games need all required data files together in a hard-drive folder; they cannot run directly from the CDs. Follow the instructions for the specific title to determine which files to copy. See ScummVM’s handling game files guide.
Check the exact title before troubleshooting
Before changing settings, confirm the game’s original platform and whether its engine is supported by your chosen runtime. For ScummVM, check its compatibility information and the title-specific file instructions. For a Windows game in Lutris, look for an installer for that exact title. For DOSBox, check whether the game expects CD-ROM mode, a volume label, audio tracks, or a disc swap.

The official guidance documents these tools and their setup features, but it does not establish that an unspecified game will install or run on every Linux distribution or computer. A successful setup for one title is not a compatibility guarantee for another.
