GIMP’s tools are grouped into categories such as selection, paint, and transform. The examples below focus on the job each tool does, so you can choose by task rather than assume that Photoshop’s interface or shortcuts carry over.

1. Paint with the Paintbrush

Before painting, check the tool options and brush settings. The brush, size, and other available options shape the mark you make, so treat those settings as part of the edit rather than assuming the tool behaves exactly like a familiar Photoshop brush.

2. Select the area an edit should affect
A selection limits an edit to a chosen region. Pick a selection tool according to the shape and edge of that region:
- Rectangle or ellipse: Use when the area has a simple geometric shape.
- Free Select: Use when you need to trace an irregular outline.
- Fuzzy Select or Select by Color: Use when the region is better identified by similar color or connected areas than by a straight boundary.

3. Refine an edit with a layer mask
A layer mask controls where a layer shows through. It lets you adjust the visible extent of an edit while keeping the layer available for further refinement, rather than treating the result as a single irreversible brush stroke. Use a mask when an effect should appear in some parts of an image but not others, or when you expect to refine its boundaries as you work.

4. Heal small defects

For larger changes, first consider whether a small-defect tool is suited to the job; the manual’s description is specifically about small defects.

5. Crop or transform, depending on the change
Use Crop to trim the canvas or change the framing. Use a transform when you need to change image or layer geometry: GIMP lists Scale, Rotate, and Unified Transform among its transform tools. How to learn the workflows without relying on Photoshop shortcuts
Start with the intended result, then find the GIMP tool that produces it. For each edit, identify what should change, which layer or region should be affected, and whether you may want to refine the result afterward. That approach is more reliable than expecting every Photoshop control or shortcut to have a direct counterpart.
- State the job: paint, isolate a region, limit visibility, repair a small defect, or change framing or geometry.
- Choose the tool by its job: use a selection to define an area, a mask to control where a layer appears, Heal for a small defect, and Crop or a transform for framing or geometry.
- Check the options and result: pay attention to tool settings and the layer or region affected, then refine the edit if needed.
- Look up unfamiliar controls: GIMP provides a built-in help system and an online manual. Its documentation page also links to tutorials and books. GIMP documentation
