There is no universal winner: use the built-in encryption available on your laptop, check that it is active, and make sure you can reach its recovery method. On Windows, distinguish automatic Device Encryption from BitLocker Drive Encryption and find out where the recovery key is stored. On a Mac, check whether it has Apple silicon, a T2 chip, or older hardware, then choose and safeguard a recovery route.
What BitLocker and FileVault protect
Both features encrypt a computer’s internal storage to help protect data at rest—for example, if a laptop is lost or stolen. They do not make a device immune to every threat, and neither feature alone determines how secure a laptop is. Configuration, account security, recovery-key handling, and organizational administration all matter.

Microsoft describes BitLocker as a Windows feature that encrypts drives. Windows has two related experiences: Device Encryption, designed to make encryption straightforward and sometimes enabled automatically, and BitLocker Drive Encryption, which offers more advanced controls. Apple’s FileVault protects Mac volumes; what encryption is already in place depends on the Mac’s hardware generation.

How availability differs by laptop
| Question | Windows: Device Encryption and BitLocker | Mac: FileVault |
|---|---|---|
| What is available? | Device Encryption can be available on Windows Home if the device meets the requirements. BitLocker Drive Encryption is available on Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Microsoft explains Device Encryption and its requirements. | Macs with Apple silicon or a T2 chip automatically encrypt internal data. Apple says FileVault adds a layer that requires login credentials. On Macs without Apple silicon or a T2 chip, FileVault must be enabled to encrypt data. Apple’s FileVault guide. |
| What should you verify? | Check your Windows edition, whether Device Encryption or BitLocker is active, and where the recovery key is saved. Features and prerequisites vary by device and setup. | Check the Mac’s chip generation, FileVault status, and selected recovery method. Automatic encryption on newer hardware does not remove the need to plan for account or device recovery. |
Which should you use?
If you use Windows
Use the encryption option supported by your edition and device. A Windows Home laptop may have Device Encryption even though it does not offer the BitLocker Drive Encryption interface found on Pro, Enterprise, and Education. Do not assume encryption is absent just because you cannot find that interface.
#1 Best Overall
- Hardware encrypted drive
- Simple to use pin access. RPM-5400
- Administrator password feature
- Bus powered
- Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
- Open Settings and look for Device encryption to check its status. The setting is available only on supported devices. For BitLocker Drive Encryption on an eligible edition, search Windows for Manage BitLocker or open it through Control Panel.
- Find out where the recovery key is stored. Depending on how encryption was activated, it may be associated with a Microsoft account, a work or school account, or managed by your organization. If you enabled drive encryption manually, check the storage choice you made.
- Before a firmware, hardware, or major system change, confirm that you can access the recovery key. Microsoft notes that such changes can cause BitLocker to request recovery even when the owner is authorized.
Microsoft’s BitLocker overview explains the feature and recovery process; its Device Encryption guide covers availability and setup conditions.
If you use a Mac
On a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 chip, internal data is encrypted automatically; enabling FileVault adds the login-credential layer Apple describes. On an older Mac without either, turn on FileVault if you want its data encryption.

- Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
- Super fast USB 3.0 Connection - Data transfer speeds up to 10X faster than USB 2.0
- Software Free Design - With no admin rights needed
- Sealed from Physical Attacks by Tough Epoxy Coating
- Brute Force Self Destruct Feature
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault and check the status. Menu wording or placement may vary with macOS version.
- When enabling FileVault, choose the offered recovery route: your Apple account or a separate recovery key.
- If you use a separate key, keep a copy somewhere other than the encrypted Mac, and do not leave it beside the computer. Make sure you can retrieve it when needed.
Apple’s FileVault setup guide describes the recovery choices. Its Platform Security guide explains encryption on Apple silicon and T2 hardware.

Encryption is only practical if you can regain access when the normal sign-in path fails. Losing or being unable to reach the required recovery credential can prevent access to protected files.

- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
- 3-year limited warranty
- Windows: A BitLocker recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password. Microsoft says recovery may be required after certain hardware, firmware, or software changes. Check the actual account or organizational route where your key is held before you need it. Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
- Mac: FileVault setup offers an Apple-account recovery option or a separate recovery key. Apple’s 2026 Platform Security guide describes a recovery key as a sequence of 24 random numbers and letters. Keep a separate key copy away from the encrypted startup disk. Apple Platform Security.
The key formats are not a measure of which system is stronger: they are different recovery credentials, not comparable encryption-strength rankings. Do not store a recovery key in an unprotected document or send it by email.

For a managed fleet, the useful comparison is not just the encryption feature; it is how the organization enforces it and controls recovery. Confirm the process that actually applies to your devices rather than assuming that a key is escrowed simply because encryption is enabled.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Windows: Establish whether recovery keys are linked to Microsoft or work/school accounts or handled through organizational management. Define who can retrieve them and how recovery is handled.
- Mac: Apple documents device-management enforcement and escrow of personal recovery keys. Its 2026 Platform Security guidance says institutional recovery keys have limited utility in modern management and are not recommended for Apple silicon management; personal recovery keys support escrow and rotation. Apple silicon deployments also involve Secure Token and volume-ownership concepts. See Apple’s deployment guide and Platform Security.
- Either platform: Compare key escrow, access controls, auditing, and the recovery workflow against the organization’s identity, device-management, and security policies.
Bottom line for an individual laptop
Choose the supported built-in encryption for the laptop you own, verify its status, and secure the recovery route before a problem arises. The practical choice is usually determined by the operating system and hardware already in front of you—not by a universal claim that BitLocker or FileVault is categorically more secure. The cited vendor documentation does not provide a comparable independent performance benchmark or head-to-head security test.
